I for one will be a lost customer if X3 comes out before or instead of an X2b. I won't pay for bug fixes, since I already paid for a product that was intended to be free of bugs. I'm trying out Cubase 7 this weekend and give it a real go since I haven't touched the product since version 4 or 5, and to prepare for X3 in lieu of X2b, but I'm still hopeful. Cakewalk, if you're reading this, I'm sincerely hoping you'll change your mind about your opacity and give us X2b next. Thanks!

I don't usually chime in on these topics, but to be fair, If they're really working hard on making the next offering right and are fixing the major bugs, no matter what it's called, they deserve our patience. Yes it would be great if someone was keeping us abreast on the progress but I doubt seriously that their silence is a result of dissing us or being callused to our needs. Steve

Im so glad i still have my X1b and not upgraded to X2 ;-)Atleast it works fairly good, and as long i can do what's needed, there is no reason for me buying a new midi / audio software. As we can not sell, or transfer the licence, we are stuck with it, sorry no refund's guy's !So when we need to buy the same program, cause they upgraded it to let's say X3. Then you have tossed the $$$ for X2right out the window, into the big blue ocean. For me i can certainly not, spend all that cash for nothing.Off course someone has more $$$ they can spend, but still.. I think the Industry has became to concerned, how to make more $$$ ! and less support, if not at all. that is atleast for me a concern, i dont say that Cake is, but many company's do !
I must say i feel with the ppl, that have issues with theyr DAW's.
So ill wait for the X3 and wait some more to see, how it will perform.
Maybe an free X3 for all the users of X2, as an band-aid on the wound, would be nice ! Hey CAKE you listening ! ( me jokes a bit, cause im to boored.. ;-)

If they do not publish open and fixed issues, they miss the feedback from users. Just look at Cockos Reaper or Steinberg Cubase forums how active their users are and how fast the bugs are fixed. Cakewalk acts like a company from the last century and they do not realise that it is year 2013 now and the SW development has changed a lot. The frequent bug fixes together with active users feedback are just the industry standard now. But, as I said before, it looks like, the Cakewalk is run only by marketing department and marketing department does not like bug fixes, their like new releases, new product advertisement, new promotional videos, new interviews and new third party plugins with nice GUI.

It used to be that the beta testers would keep a close eye on the forums and alert development to the issues popping up. As beta testers issues were reported, some just got passed up and not pursued. The easy squeaky wheel got the grease most of the time. When the wheel fell off completely, that always got attention.
Ever since Roland bought Twelve Tone, it has gone downhill IMO. I am sorry I upgraded to X2 and may not get X3 since 8.5/X1 does what I need. They would have to offer a free or steep discount for X2 users to upgrade to X3 for me to get on board with that absent an X2b update.

That is a fair assessment, but the culprit usually is rooted in cost. As a customer, my perception is that Cakewalk's development team is understaffed. I'm sure they're not dissing us or being callous, and they do take great pride in their work. I believe the bakers have a job more challenging than anything I've ever done in my career as a Network Engineer. However, I do believe they are heavily driven in priorities due to the lack of resources and time. I know exactly what that feels like. I managed an Engineering team for 4 years, and that was our biggest challenge (meeting priorities with little cashflow and constant overtime with no light at the end of the tunnel). I don't think Cakewalk is ignoring us, but I did want to point out how transparent Steinberg was on their own forum. I was thoroughly impressed! You have to have time and resources to gain that. I'm a very patient guy. In fact, I have recommended in several threads that I don't want to see X2b hit us until it's darn well good and ready. My concern is that I don't want the "fixes" to simply be rolled up into an X3 (a paid upgrade) bundled with new features that could (and likely would) present their own new bugs and issues. More, I would pay for X2b. I'm contradicting myself here on the surface, but my point is, I would pay for X2b to be filled entirely of fixed and efficiency improvements, right alongside re-engineering Take Lanes and Zooming. I don't want to pay for these things to appear in X3 bundled with a bunch of other "things" I don't know I need yet. If I have a voice on where my money goes, X2b, and I'll pay for it gladly. I wished X2a would have fixed all our issues, but that wasn't the case, and in fact for me, it subtracted some performance, but that being said, I'd pay $99 for X2b to not have to sink $699 in Cubase 7, which is a likely move if X3 comes next. We like it to be great, but even 1,000 features that rule are all shot down if the framework is iffy and causes cursidents. I hope this clears the air a little from my perspective.

One additional comment here about X2b, and I'll accept being ostracized for saying this, but for some companies, such as Waves for example, there's an update plan you get with the purchase of a new plug-in. When you buy it, the plug-in includes the update plan for about a year. Should Waves update the product, you get the update/upgrade for free during that time-period. If you let that update plan expire, you'll need to purchase any updates made to the product, and/or renew the plan. I don't like the idea, personally, but I now see the benefits. What this does is not only protect your investment, but keeps a cash-flow coming in at Waves even when all plug-ins have basically been sold, and customers no longer need to purchase new plug-ins. In the case of Cakewalk, revenue is generated only by sales, not support. That's not a very predictable model, and innovation or fixes are harder to justify in expense, especially the longer sales have diminished for the flagship product. I will go on to say that Waves blew my mind when I had a support guy work with me at almost midnight on a Friday from his home to fix an issue I had with Sonar crashes while using Waves plug-ins. However, I scheduled the time with the tech, he called me on my mobile, and he did all the work. All I had to do was sit back and watch. That's what a support plan can do, folks, and I believe if you buy something big for $399 (Producer) you get what you pay for, and the fact that Cakewalk even supports it for free is a challenge. If it were more expensive, or we paid for a support plan, Cakewalk could justify spending the resource hours to better support and more brains in seats to get this stuff under better testing. I think they do what they can with what they have.

Usually the minor updates and bug fixes are free (Cockos Reaper, Steinberg Cubase, etc. ) and major updates are paid. There is one exception, Image-line Fruity Loops has lifetime free updates and it is one of the most popular DAW.

Surprisingly, I'm with you on paying for a genuine maintenance update, if they did not pollute it with untested candy. Yet I don't blame others for being appalled by this thought. I'd even donate to them, kickstarter style, if they put their cards on the table and needed it. However, a release of any kind (X2b, X3) without a promise for communication and some level of transparency is not acceptable for my business. A modern DAW software company cannot put out releases "as is" then disappear for 6 months (+ however much longer it will be). Others seem fine with wondering and hoping for the best, but I need more, and I don't feel it is unreasonable or impatient to expect more. And FYI: The full retail for Cubase 7 is $499, and many deals can be found.

I'm sure many of you already know how badly I've responded to the entire X line... And then 3 steps forward and 2 steps back and as I was getting used to the workflow they threw a wall in front of me with Lanes...
But I must say that unless they change something else in the pricing, they have been quite generous. Subscription based? They have always been that as far as between major releases (yearly) and have given us numerous updates every year... And the updates usually have many new features other than numerous fixes. In the new Roland era model they are still doing this, but fewer releases and an extra sales promotion instead of a paid update every other year....
My picture of this? They are stretching the development cycle to attempt increasing sales numbers vs. paid release... Must look better on the shareholder's report... ;-)
I hope every day that some embers of 12Tones raises it's head and stuns the world in surviving the changes imposed since the sale of the company... (Shares)
I for one still hope it does survive. It would be a shame if a company such as Roland, who have developed so many music tools for the world, crushed the life out of this wonderful product. Many of us who have been with them for the lifespan of the company will remember (I'm sure) the countless wonderful surprises they have always brought us (eventually)...
So I try to be patient, but as I age I have less time to wait!

Like Keni I have the same frustrations with replacing Layers with the broken Lanes that haven't been addressed or fixed. Because of this & other issues I also started demoing new DAWS & wound up purchasing Cubase7. I do hope they get things squared away. I've only used Cakewalk for my projects since the late '90s but that's not the case any longer. No DAW is without flaws, I'll still use Sonar but not as my first or only option.

This reminds me when Microsoft released Windows Phone 8 last year and did not release SDK beta before because their marketing strategy was to surprise customers with new features. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the customers were surprised, but with the lack of application (just because developers did not have the SDK because of sick people from marketing). Sometimes are marketing strategies really stupid. I hope that this will not happen with Sonar. Open communication with customers is important.

I'm a light DAW user so when I encounter any of the minor bugs with selection, PRV, and take lanes, I assume I'm doing something wrong instead of assuming a bug. Takes a lot of time to figure out that it wasn't me. I've been using Sonar since 8.5 and love the direction X2 went but, for me as well, the lack of communication has been offputting and uncharacteristic. My DAW activity has picked up recently and these issues are getting harder to ignore putting me on the fence as well.

The funny thing is, and this is not to take a jab at you, that I don't think a single person in this thread has even mentioned Pro Tools. Like I find the REALLY funny because for the "industry standard" it sure seems like nobody wants to anywhere near it. lol I know I sure as heck wouldn't buy it. For the most part people seem to be focusing on Cubase and Reaper and although I'm sure they have their problems they are looking like reasonable alternatives these days. Also there have been very few posts complaining about the actual design of X2. Personally I don't see how even Reaper or Cubase could beat Sonar as far as the quality of the design and the feature set. The problem is it just doesn't seem to work properly. When it works it's great but it flakes out far too often and a bunch of the amazing features can't be used as advertised. It's ALMOST there I think but it needs at least one good patch to get it to be a little less unstable. I don't even care if it's perfect. I'd be happy if they fixed the selection problem (which is a biggie) and solved whatever the heck it is that makes the graphics go all wonky. If I gotta pay for basic stuff like that... well I already paid for that stuff when I first bought the program and I sure as heck don't want to pay for an upgrade with a whole NEW set of things that could go wrong only to wait around for another year hoping those things get fixed. I'll just get Reaper and hope the things X2 cannot handle reliably can be done there and save my money so I can go back to being a happy Steinberg customer again.

Beepster It's like a project starts to slowly corrupt over time.
I've made this exact same point on a number of occasions. Weird stuff starts happening in a project over time and then you lose your confidence in it because you're always worrying what in the hell is going to screw up next. I've actually had to abandon a couple of projects and painstakingly import everything into a new project because they got so screwy. One recent symptom of a corrupting project that I've mentioned on here is when selecting a range of contiguous clips with SHIFT just spontaneously stops working in certain tracks. The SHIFT key then takes on the function of the CTRL key, in that I can only use it to select multiple clips individually. Not a good sign when basic clip selection doesn't work properly, for sure.
Project performance does at times degrade over a session, often leading to a crash/white-out. Transport becomes delayed and jittery, and the now-time marker/line might even disappear completely. Last night, a project would not stop playing. Not with spacebar, transport, etc... Sonar was not frozen, yet nothing on screen worked. I had to kill the Sonar process. And yes, clip selection often goes wonky on me too. Sometimes when trying to select clips, something gets "locked" and although I have no mouse/keyboard buttons engaged, it starts highlighting regions I pass over and will not let me individually select anything. Sometimes clip envelopes become un-editable (via shift-click, or even the "Clip automation" drop down option). Once this happens, I have to collapse then uncollapse the take lanes EVERY time I need to select an envelope. Sorry, I believe I went off course here. Let's not turn this into another scattered bug thread. The main point is, X2a has some issues that need to be fixed. These are not wish-list items for X3.

Effective communication helps us better understand a person and/or business, or situation and enables us to resolve differences, build trust and respect, and create environments where creative ideas, problem solving, affection and caring can flourish. By learning these effective communication skills, you can better connect... Was a writing this to my wife of 31 years or concerning my long time Cakewalk/Sonar relationship - I think we need some counseling...

Soundblend Maybe we need an new forum tab like "Bug's reports" , and with someone from CW have a dialog with the customers... A separate "Bug Report" forum would be useful anyway, with or without CW staff involvement.

Some of you guys are really something and I'm not saying you're problems are not real. Ok, picture this: You have some software(not hardware)developed you want to sell and a forum that is used for users to communicate...... I just hope you all see this thread is not closed, even after a few posts that would bother me if I would own the forum ................................. Carry on.

If they didn't want to allow negative feedback then they wouldn't have created the forum in the first place. There is nothing wrong with ranting about the shortcomings of something you've paid hundreds of dollars for. It's not as if they don't get enough positive feedback to counter it, because they do.

I owe Sonar an apology. It was brought to my attention that my buggy project had offset mode accidentally bumped on. Turns out I've been here before... http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2737623 Which only goes to show I'm a slow learner. So, Sorry guys. I retract my grumpiness.
StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen. I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

I have little tolerance for whining threads and people taking below the belt shots at cakewalk, theres no need for that. I think you know that's how I am anyway. but your different, I don't see your posts as whining or taking low shots at cakewalk, you seem to be brining up real issues and saying them more with concern than complaint and in a productive manner. I can also agree with you that x2 could be better. it could benefit by an update I think, now weather or not that update is totally needed, well I guess its who you ask. even thought I think it could be better and benefit by an update that's not to say im not happy with it as it is. there's just a few things that annoy me more than stop me from being productive. I do hope you stay through the next what ever it is, lets hope an update for the sake of a lot of users. on a side note: your graphics problem on the other hand, have you tried that on another computer to rule it out ? cant say ive experienced any graphics issues and im using a pretty basic graphics card (nividea GForce GT 560) either way I wish you the best, you've been so helpful to so many people on this forum, your one of the good guys, that's clear to say and anyone who thinks different just doesn't know your intent and who you are per say.

this one got me good the first time I couldn't understand why my automation would work correctly :) I thought if my faders are bouncing to zero everytime I grab a fader to make realtime automation I need to rethink my process.lol. it happened to me by accidently hitting the "O" key while I was aiming for the the "P" key.
