Now we're talkin', Reece! This is getting a nice, plump sound.
The electric is sitting pretty at 2:21 where it takes the lead.
The distortion from around 0:55 to there still sounds a little thin, but I agree that it is played nicely.
In the previous versions, it was so thin and scratchy, to my ears, that it was distracting, and detracted from the overall performance. It might benefit from a bit more mid/ bottom, but that's your call. In this version I have a much better feel for how the guitar plays into your vision for the song.
And I like the space around your vox. Subtle, but just enough to let it settle into the mix.
By the way, I really like the confidence in your vocal delivery. When I listen, I believe you mean it.
I realize my initial post was somewhat harsh, but I know what you can do, and I wasn't hearing it.
This version is game on.

Hi, Reece,

I apparently missed the first two mixes, but to me, this one sounds really good!

Great songwriting, and your vocals sound excellent.  Very strong, but much more relaxed and natural sounding than usual, which I think is a major difference.  I like the acoustic guitar, keys and the fantastic sax, and the BIAB guitar around 2:23 sounded pretty good with the nice organ pad in the background propping it up.

All in all, I think this is my new favorite from you, great work, buddy!

Hi Reece,  crisis averted, all's well in mixville : ) Electric guitar sounds better and now I can hear the acoustic. 2:45 also solved. good job , sir.

This is a nice move up from the other mixes an all together more cohesive sound.  Agree with what has been said about your vocal sounding more relaxed.

Bob (RobertB) - thanks my friend!  I did bump the low mids just a dog's hair more in this new mix.  take a listen!

Bob - Hello my rockin' friend!  I'm glad you stopped by and checked it out!  and I'm really glad you like it and appreciate the kind words!  I really appreciate the kind words about my vocals.  I've worked hard on improving and it's really nice to hear that may be paying off!  thanks again!  and good luck with your CD!!

Rik - bless you for another listen! thanks and I appreciate the confirmation that I'm working in the right direction!

John - you have more words in each post!  I can almost tell from how much you say as to how much you like it!    thanks for the confirmation that it's getting better here and on the soundcloud page!  I appreciate you very much my furry friend!

Frank - thanks very much for stopping by and listening and for the great comments!  I really really appreciate it more than you can imagine!  Rich does sound great on this, I agree!  I just love what his sax does for this song - it wouldn't be the same without him!  thanks for the kind words to me and Yvonne, I'll pass that on!

There's a new mix up!  I tweaked the guitar just a tad more but most importantly I replaced the BIAB bass with some smokin' BAPU BASS!  thank you Ed very much for your contribution to this song, I appreciate it very much and think you've improved the song a lot with this nice bass line and great tone here!  thanks my friend!

everyone have another listen with Ed's bass in the mix and let us know whatcha think!

Hey Reese, This sounds pretty good.  I guess I missed the earlier versions.  I listened this morning before this latest posting.  I like the addition of Bapu's bass playing; nice bass work.  I too think this is your best vocal work so far.  When I listened second time this eveing, I liked the way your voice carries the first verse before Yvonne enters into the chorus's.  Maybe its just me, but I feel like it would sound better if you handled the verses and her voice only came in on the chorus parts,  It would give this a little more seperation for me between verse and chorus.  There are a few areas in the chorus, during the "You Rescue Me" parts that it may have sounded better to harmonize an octive higher than she is.  Not sure if that is in her range, but it seemed like she was going down in tone when I wished it would go up.

Overall, good work brother....one of your best to date.

Much better Reece, the verses are laying back nicely now, choruses have more punch and the acoustic guitar is coming through.

You are certainly getting better each time out Reece.

Mix could use a bit of air, maybe a lift of high end up around 10k for some sparkle.

John - thanks so much for the listen and the kind words!  I appreciate it!  glad to see you around here again!

Bob (RobertB or Shimozu-Kushiari) - thanks!  I appreciate the multiple listens and sticking with me!  glad you like!

Michael - I appreciate the listen and comments!  thanks!  I understand what you're saying about the BGV's during the verses, but I kind of like them like this.  It may be a "familiarity" kind of thing - this is often the way we do things at church (Yvonne and I both sing on a praise team together).  And as far as getting her to sing higher, I'm not sure that would be best because of her range.  she could do it, but just barely.  if you notice at the end we both go up an octave and I don't know if anyone else can tell or not, but she's barely hitting it and actually straining just a little, so it wouldn't be good for the whole song.  thanks for the suggestions, tho, I'm ALWAYS open for suggestions even if I don't implement what you suggest.  I'll certainly take it into consideration for the next song!

thanks again!  I appreciate the kind words!

baps - the pleasure is mine, my friend!  you did a bang up job on that bazz!  love your addition here - it really helped improve the song and the mix a lot!  that other bass really bothered me because of the tone.  it wasn't played poorly, but it was mostly just redundancy, too, tho.  yours was excellent!  thanks again!

Jan - thank you sir!  I appreciate the extra listens and great comments!

Robby (The Band19) - thanks?

James - thanks!  I appreciate you taking the time to listen again and comment and I appreciate your kind words!  mixing is a labor of love, eh?  it must be or we'd get someone else to do it!  lol!

Dave (quantumeffect) - thanks for the listen and thanks for the kind words!  I appreciate it very much!

James - thank you very much!  It takes experience and falling on one's face over and over and listening and learning from folks like you on the forum.  thanks again!  I'll take a look at the "sparkle"!!!

John (wookiee) - thanks for the continued suuport my furry friend!

Barry (trimph1) - love enthusiastic comments like that!  thanks very much!  I appreciate the listen and the kind words!

Feel free to continue to listen and comment folks!  I love it!!!

this is by far the best mix i have heard from you Reece. so kudos! the vocal is great i though a little loud initially but it settles in really well as we go along. like the BV too. Sax is great. like the organ playing and the BIAB guitar sounds ok to me. I would like the acoustic to have a little more air and sparkle though. Thee Ed's bass is cool, again a bit more body would help pin the mix down even more. you have a really nice, open, clean mix here, i'd say it's 97% perfect.

Re:You Rescue Me (new mix with some comments incorporated) 2012/06/03 04:36:54 (permalink)
Reece, I finally had a chance to listen to this. Leaps and bounds better with all the changes we discussed. The only three small issues I have are:

1. Like mgh stated, I felt the vocals at times are over-powering the mix. To hear what I'm hearing...listen to the sections of the chorus and especially in the end. When you start to lose the other instruments and aren't hearing them at all times, that's when the vocals hit a bit too loud. We should never lose an instrument. Even when something is loud, the other instruments always need to be in there.

2. The hats and cymbals at times are non-existent. Especially the hats. All I seem to hear now are kick and snare and crashes once in a while.

3. The bass was cool before in my opinion, but Ed's bass definitely brings things to a new level for the better. (nice job Ed!) I do, however, hear a few bad notes during some of the runs. Ed is doing whole step notes that in my opinion, are out of key with the song. The jumps where he does this should be half-steps. For example, 0:06/7 the da da da da part...it should be D C# B A because that is a major key part. Instead he's playing D C B A which would fit if the part was minor. There are a few other spots where the whole note changes just don't sit right with me and sound...well, I'm just going to say "they don't sound right and should be half steps to my ears". Subjective, but that's what I hear.

Other than the above, this really turned out incredible brother. Definitely a solid mix with a great message and some great players to boot. :)

i actually thought the first mix was pretty good, but i guess by an overwhelming responce iwas wrong.
i do like this mix too.

but the drums appear to be getting lost in the mix.
the cymbals are almost un audable when comming back in from the breaks.

what a balance game hu reece?
over all the song itself is really good,it is soooo catchy man.
the more i hearthis song the more i like it.
