I'd like to think I'm not that gullible. That I'm not taken in by photo-realistic graphics of worn labels, scratched faceplates and old-fashioned knobs, or vague promises of "mojo" and "character". And I really ought to spend the 20 bucks on some socks so I can retire the ones my toes peek out of.

Oh well. I got it and I like it.

First thing I noticed is that it's a pretty high CPU hit, higher than any other compressors I have. That's too bad, because where it sounds best is on individual vocal tracks.

Anybody figure out how the M/S feature works? There was no manual or help file included in the download.

I gather it's enabled when the "AGC" (mode) switch is set to "LAT / VERT". Apparently, the "LEFT-LAT" threshold then controls either Mid or Side, and the "RIGHT-VERT" threshold controls the other. Don't know which is which, though.

When you bring up the "Vocals" preset, M/S mode is selected. I don't understand this - most vocal tracks are mono, where M/S processing is irrelevant. Furthermore, the plugin respects the interleave and outputs mono if the input is mono, regardless of what settings are chosen. I don't see how M/S processing is even meaningful on a mono vocal track, but they must have had a reason...

I did find this copy of the manual for the original hardware unit that explained a few things.

The terms "lateral" and "vertical" refer to the grooves on a vinyl record. That was the key bit of insight, because the lateral movement is the Mid component and the vertical movement is the Side component when using M/S encoding for vinyl. So it would appear that "LAT" = "Mid" and "VERT" = "Side".

That's correct Bit, ol pal.  When I first got the UAD version that Lat and Vert confused the heck out of me.  Until I downloaded the manual and saw, as per usual, it was only semantics.

Re:audioMIDI no brainer! 2011/07/02 14:07:18 (permalink)
Here's some more information, this regarding the "DC Thres" control, which is called "DC Bias" on the original unit. Here's the explanation from the UAD 670 manual. Presumably UAD went to the same trouble as IK when they modeled the original hardware unit, and if so then this should apply to both.

DC Bias controls the ratio of compression as well as the knee width. As the knob is turned clockwise, the ratio gets lower and the knee gets broader. The threshold also gets lower as the knob is turned clockwise. The ‘factory cal’ tick mark should be aligned with the screw slot “dot” for factory specification. It would probably be more technically accurate to say that this control simply changes the knee width, since no matter where it’s set the ratio always approaches true limiting eventually. However, the knee becomes so broad that it becomes more practical to speak of the ratio changing, because for reasonable (<25 dB) amounts of compression, this is the case.

Here's a photo of the original unit:

And here's a link to some technical info for the geeks. I read somewhere that only 45 units were manufactured originally (there probably wasn't much demand for stereo processors in 1959), and saw one for sale for $30,000. A modern replica can be had for $12,000.

Twenty bucks would appear to be a bargain.

And more...here's a video from UA on mid-side mastering with the 670.

Just a bump for the thread, as I believe this was a 1-week only offer, and this really is something you'll want to jump on, folks. I don't care how many compressors and limiters you have in your collection, you don't have anything quite like this one.

OK, if you've got the UAD version, then you do.

Dave,
I bought TRackS3 Deluxe some time back so the only "singles" I have added are the "Black" & "White" UA emulations. But, as you can see they are showing up in the drop down.
Are you running 8.5x64?
Is the "path" the same for the shell and singles?
On my x64 install, the IK Installer wanted to put everything in "Program Files\vstplugins".
I changed that to "Program Files\Cakewalk\VstPlugins" both on the update of TRackS3 Deluxex64, and then again when I installed the UA emulations.
Just a thought, but it might matter.

IK Obi, where are you buddy?

Dave needs some help/advice...

Dave,
One more question. You bought the Shell, then the 670?
If so the Classic EQ is included with shell; right?
The Fairchild is the "Vintage Compressor Model 670".

mine is the same way - I can load the 670 on its own, but only my EQ is showing up in the shell - I should have the Classic EQ, the Classic Comp and the 670 available to load in the shell, but only the EQ is there.
