"Just know now" New!!!
I've been rearranging many older tunes lately, and wanted to write something new. Last Monday I was playing with my home-made guitar amp while I was baby-sitting. Came up with this little tune. I got to use my crappy '70s chord organ finally. I also used the custom tube amp I built on the slide guitar solo's. It transfers to recording well me thinks! Anyway, my ears are no longer subjective....a little listen and comments would help me cap it off. "Just know now" http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=8356075&q=hi Thanks, Ron

Hi, Ron, This is really great! I like the way the sections flow as the different textures of the instruments come in and out. The vintage organ sounds like I remember my first keyboard, a 70's Tiesco chord organ, the acoustic guitar is perfect, and the home made amp sounds killer on the slide solos! The vocals sound excellent and the mix is nice and clear. My only very minor suggestion is that I would bring the harmonica sounding part that starts at 45 seconds up a few Dbs, I really have to strain to hear it on my moinitors. As I said very minor! Anyway, excellent song, killer job! Bob

Love this song - especially when the electric guitar comes in. Really nice chords throughout and great vocals. Lovely 'feelgood' factor listening to this, takes me back a long time. Fantastic, this could be on any 'easy-listening' album you could buy.

I really like the electric guitars in the mix. They sound great. The chord organ sounds cool in the song. That is a nice touch. Thanks for sharing, Tom

Thanks for the nice comments! I was struggling with the vocals for a few reasons, and was about ready to trash them and start over. I have a nasty cold, and "theraflu-ed" my way through it. Once I get down to mixing they start to sound very unnatural, and eq has hleped, but it might be my mic. It is not so smooth.

Ron this is excellent! I love the accoustic framework of this number, and the organ is beautiful. Your vocals came off great IMO, and the mix sounded very well done to me. I love the balance and the way the guitars blend in and out with the vox. This is a great listen, one I'd love to see hit the airwaves! Awesome job!

Yeah, the siblance is off the charts...partly because I have a ton of compression and gain too. The low breathy vocals are tough on my condenser, and it's been a challenge. I am working on volume envelopes to fix it this evening. Mostly because I was hearing a lot of noise and pops in the vocals too. What I need is a better microphone now, I'm trying to wrap my head around all the choices in the range I'm trying to stay in.

I am not sure if I posted about the amp in that thread or not, but I was most impressed (oh yah, now I remember, I was wondering how the paper stood up over all those years - did you answer that?). This is great. Vox are great. That tone is awesome, glad I got to hear it. No complaints. Mix is great.

Yeah, I answered back. I think it's due to the manufaturing techniques back then, and it being in one place all the time. I've seen many a cone from '65 through '75 that were just completely shot, but mid '50s cones just perfect. I already sold that amp, but I have 4 more tube amps sitting here ready to be turned in to guitar amps! I was up pretty late cleaning all the junk from the mix, and tightened up the vocals a lot. I'm going to try and post it later when it's done depending on how much I can actually work on it.

Wow Ron ..... I thoroughly enjoying listening to this one. No vocals ? ... Oh, there they are .... Nice Nice little change up. very nice slide guitar. I like the harmonics ( or are they ? - Mandolin??? Cool) Very nice sound quality ... I'll attribute that to your choice in amplification. -TAP-

There's nothing "wrong" with this. I personally prefer the vocals more up front in the mix. What are you using for bus compression? I think the mix could be a little more glued together. Peace, J

This made me think of Fleetwood mack, especially wheen your vocals came in as they sounded like Lyndsey Buckingham in parts. Your guitar sounds absolutely fantastic, nice playing too. Can't find anything major to criticise really, it's a very solid piece of work. Very well done.

Well, I think it's polished decent. I got rid of the clicks from the compressor on the vox. What took me the most time was de-noisying the mix. Had a lot of trimming to do, and used a volume envelope on the bass like a gate to remove an nasy buzzing from electrical interference...and yes, it was super-time consuming! I think the new mix sounds a lot smoother. It was a lot of effort for such a subtle difference, but I'm glad I did it.

I really liked the beginning. I wasn't sure where you were going once the electrics came in, but it works. This is a pretty great song, so my critiques are on the mix only. The drums sound well played but buried and lifeless in the mix. No sense of stereo excitement with them. On the first organ solo I noticed a drop in the relative volume of the drums. Could be compression kicking in. One way I avoid this is to never send anything directly to the master bus. When you have compressors running on all the busses you hardly ever get that huge dip (unless you want it of course!). And make sure the total of all the busses going to master bus doesn't exceed -6 db. This way when final compression is applied you have enough headroom to dynamically bump up and not hit the -0db ceiling. The bass is kinda dull and lacks definition. Which stinks cuz it underpins the tune really nice. I hear a lot sibilance ducking, but way too much. Sounds like you have peanut butter on the roof of your mouth when you sang (which I am pretty sure was not the case!).

I'm using EZ Drummer. For some reason The snare changes to a different snare at a certain part of the song. I see why you think it gets compressed. The snare starts with a nice crack to a lifeless thud. I took some steps to mask it with a remix (also worked on the vox more) and posted it up. I may have to go fix that snare...it can be done...just really tedious!

That's great Ron... really liked it and is that some Eagles influence there in parts? I reckon redo the vocals without the cold coz your vocal is gonna get that bit of edge that's being robbed by the boogers and blocked nose I reckon. Vocal almost sounds too 'nice' as though you're focusing on getting diction through the moist nostril canals. Redone vocal has potential to be killer on this song if this take is anything to go by. Ending sounded like it kind of just cut out too... was expecting one of those cool fade outs (normally left for songs that players don't know how to finish) coz it would have suited with that cool slide happening etc... Thanks for the share... was cool.

Very good song Ron, I enjoyed this a lot. Lovely, filthy slide sound, can't resist that . Mix-wise it sounds a little narrow, and something in the low end (kick drum?) is clipping (unless it's my ears) Superb guitar work throughout, and a really well-written song. James

No, it wasn't you. I tried a little mastering in Ozone, and didn't hear the bass until it was on soundclick already. I went through the mix again, so I played with the drums some more. This time I was a little more careful with the mastering. I uploaded it last night.
