ORIGINAL: Rousseau Please post any comments / suggestions on the bottom of the thread and i'll include them. Whats the difference between SONAR 3 Studio and Producers Edition ? Producers edition comes with a few extras, including - a bunch of FX plugins from Sonitus (that are actually quite good) - Lexicon reverb (which is so-so) - VSampler (a software sampler) Hi Steve I wonder if we could amend this portion to indicate that Pro. ver. also has Per Track EQ and Studio does not. Thanks, Bunches BTW - I recently read through this top to bottom as part of my self-inflicted Sonar education, and I cannot say with enough emphasis what an amazing, giving, and helpful function you are doing with this. Regards

Nicely done. If it helps, I've gone thru a learning curve by upgrading from 98SE to XP Pro & Sonar 3. The Windows upgrade caused many problems. The solution was to completely reformat my OS drive and install the full version of XP Pro. I highly recommend this over purchasing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows. Brian

Hi Steve, how goes it? In response to some of the problems that I have seen posted regarding lost settings, etc, I thought a blurb such as follows might be a good addition to the FAQ. Recording: Work Habits/Notes It is a good idea for all Sonar Users to assume that any of their settings in a project could be lost at any time. For this reason, I urge everyone to follow the work habits of Professional Recording Engineers and document ALL settings for a project METICULOUSLY in the event that they have to be manually recreated later for a contract gig. These settings should include, but not be limited to: * Instruments used and special tunings * Mics used and placements * VST settings * Synthesizer patches (name, bank, voice) * Samples used * EQ settings (per track and master) * Effects used and settings/automation * Musician position in the room * Types of patch cables used * Instrument amps * Mixer used and settings * Track levels at start of mixdown * Automation notes * Speakers used to monitor, mix and master and their positions * Any special vocal techniques used * Special room treatment for mic'd recording * Anything special or out of the ordinary that contributed to the project Pro's make the most meticulous notes on a recording session when they have the most elaborate setups available. We can take from their example. Project Studios, on the other hand, do their thing more "on the fly". You might come up with something that is good enough to put out Professionally on a CD, but if you have a problem with the Sonar file for any reason, at least if you have good notes, you could recreate the whole project, or part, as needed. Also, keep these notes separate from the CWP/CWB file, and be sure to file a hard-copy. Remember, that song you consider a "gem" might turn out to be a gem to a major producer too. And, remember Murphy's Law.... Regards Steve Leake

Wow, remapping the spacebar is a great idea! Does that work if the focus is on plug in windows too? Shoot, I'm going to try that when I get home tonight. I think my only suggestion is to get this off of the forum where you have to worry about sticking and bumping it and onto a web site where it can be indexed and categorized better. Good stuff. Maybe Cakewalknet.com would host it for you? -michael

Hi Steve, Wonderful job here. Much appreciated! How about a section that lays out all the aud.ini tweaks? We certainly see enough requests for these, and at some point every Sonar user ends up searching for one or another. Seems logical they'd be listed in one place. Now we don't expect you to do the research to compile them all, so say the word, and I'll start the thread asking for submissions. (Or anyone else can get the ball rolling). Thanks! C'mon Mods, please make this a sticky! JD

This FAQ is just excellent. So many great answers and helpful hints. I've just bumped up to Sonar 3 Studio from Home Studio 2002, and I'm shopping around for a good set of sound modules or soft synths. I like the EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Silver Edition very much. But then I've read that Sample Tank has everything anyone could ever need. I compose scores for film, so my needs don't revolve around loops or pre-recorded music, but traditional orchestra instruments coupled with world instruments to compose through my keyboard. My system - Dell 8200 P4, 2 GHz, two dual 100G hard drives, 768 Ram, M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, and a Yamaha P-80 Keyboard. If anyone has any good suggestions on a set of virtual instruments to buy, I'd be very interested your advice. Alan

The solution was to completely reformat my OS drive and install the full version of XP Pro. I highly recommend this over purchasing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows. I have done this a few times, and correct me if I'm wrong, but the only difference between upgrade and full versions of Windows is that at some point during the install (assuming it's a fresh install), you are asked to put your previous Windows disk in the drive to be verified. Then the install continues. I've only done this with XP Home, though. BTW, what a great thread! I noticed one thing, though. You say: Should I use ASIO, WDM or MME drivers ? You should use ASIO or WDM drivers if your soundcard supports them. They offer much better performance than the older MME standard. Any difference between ASIO and WDM will be down to the individual soundcard. You will need to go with WDM if you want to use multiple soundcards in the same PC. Do you mean soundcards from different manufacturers? I use 2 Aardvark Q10s in ASIO with no problems. Steve, where do you find the time?

Excellent! Thank you, Administrators! Now that we have the FAQ on top, I'd suggest we all keep our posts here limited to the topics at hand (those related to the FAQ), and not ask or answer questions that belong in their own thread. Otherwise this one will get out of hand very fast. And since there've been a few additional requests now for the aud.ini tweaks, I'll go ahead and start that thread, so Steve (Rousseau), whenever, and however, you feel like running with it... Finally, Steve, I think I speak for all of us here when I say, thanks so very much for your efforts. You've done an amazing job on this and deservedly, it is now at the top of the forum where it belongs! Regards, JD

Can't find a reference to this frequently asked question in this FAQ. Q: "Why did my Track View suddenly stop scrolling?" A: Turn off Scroll Lock. Has to be asked and answered on a weekly basis. Can we get it added to the FAQ? Thanks, Steve!

By golly -- just reinstalled Sonar to fix that problem and here it is in keyfuzz's addition to this faq! Only recently began to use a KVM switch, which uses the Scroll lock key to switch computers -- an odd number of presses and presto my track view (and piano roll view and event window view) wouldn't scroll! Now I finally understand it!
