Well, that basically sums this one up, except for the mixing part where they show you how to use Sonar in a practical way (sadly it wasn't long enough and seemed rushed).  This would've proven more useful then trying to go through most of Sonar features in one video.  I was hoping to see Audio Snap 2.0 in action, but that didn't happen (just an overview).

  • The video quality was very good.
  • Presentation was very good (though they had the wrong heading in the TOC - "SWA Complete iZotope Ozone 4")
  • The audio quality was not so good in terms of how it was edited (chopped off words, residual ambience and some robot sounding parts).
  • The voice was more intelligible.

Overall, I think it is worth the money if you're new to Sonar.  The video does a good job at showing you most of its features, but it rarely goes into a practical application of them.  I would've personally divided the content into two videos: Audio editing and MIDI editing in Sonar.  After all, it is more useful to see the tools in action rather than just tell you what they do.

Take care!

Just downloaded and started watching.  The screen is about 15% larger than my monitor (and I have a decent sized monitor).  It was a struggle to "get down to" the controls at the bottom--which start out off screen.  Much of the screen is off of the right hand and left hand sides also.

Is there some way of resizing the screen? (The usual method doesn't work--no double-headed arrow appears for sizing...)

Chris,
Thanx for the extended period/promo code.  I just ordered Sonar 8.5, and because of your $20 generosity, I also ordered the Ozone 4 video.

Got to agree with Jose.  I would have appreciated more practical examples not just showing what 8.5 was able to do.  Good for a beginner but not for someone already familiar with Sonar.

Cheers,

Thanks for the comments - feedback is always important.

As for the TOC Typo - this has been fixed ;-) we actually posted a new version minutes after release once we spotted it.

As for the audio on the voice over - we are working on re-editing the voice over to hopefully remove some of the sudden clips.  Some of the robot sounding parts - these will be taking care of.

Thanks,
Chris

The video is done in the 720p HD format.  Of course this is extended slightly by the GUI Window bars and the player's control panel.  Most monitors should be able to display it.  Typical 17" Widescreen monitors run with a native resolution of 1440x900 which should be enough to display the video and player.  The player window is fixed and cannot be resized.  Which monitor resolution are you running.

We have decided some time ago to move to HD Resolutions (for now 720p we hope to move to 1080p once monitor's native resolutions increase to support the resolution) as we found that taking screen captures and resizing them down to small sizes created a picture that was far to blurry to make out.  HD resolutions allow us to grab a large portion of the interface without have to resize it - maintaining crisp, clear image.

Thanks,
Chris

This is very awesome Chris! This speaks volumes of you guys.

Please let us know when you fix these issues.  There's no deadline, so take your time :-)

By the way, I know that a lot of people would appreciate a video on how and when to use more advanced techniques in Sonar (i.e. Parallel Compression, 2-Stage Compression, Audio Snap 2.0, Subgroup Mixing, Group Editing, Scoring to Video, etc).  Probably the best way to do this is by incorporating all of these techniques into a Mixing Session.  I don't know, just an idea :-)

I find the sound quite low.I had to change my 19" 4.3 monitor settings to 1280x1024 in order to see all of the video.I also would have preferred a walkthrough tutorial.

Happy.

I'm not sure I follow you regarding the "advertisement" line, though. It is a commercial, educational product. I would call it a general audio-visual demonstration, albeit not fully detailed in the case of some features, of what Sonar offers in an overview format. I don't think they promise much more than that, and I wouldn't classify over two hours of details as an "advertisement." Advertisements are for selling products and attracting attention. The purpose of advertisements is not really to educate, which these videos do (at least for me).

I have to add that I'm not an advanced user. Each time I check it out, I learn more stuff. But it all depends on your perspective. I agree with Jose though, an advanced video would be welcome. Scoring video is going to be something I will need to do. And how about one on Beatscape and other soft synths in Sonar, in addition to the Dim Pro and Rapture ones available? I'm a fan of this company's products, they are well done.

Just bought the video.

There are problems with screen size, the audio (some words just went missing, overall you have to crank the volume up a lot when watching) and although I am a true Sonar Newbie there was nearly nothing new there for me :(

All the things that interested me where simply shown, like "look there is function x". but no word on the different parameters and such.

35 bucks i could have spent on other things :(

So, they for example dedicated 5 minutes to "Transpose", "Retrogade" and "Deglitch". But why did they not give any audio examples?

When talking about "Fit to time" they also did not show the result (as in most of the times), so I am honestly left without any idea, what they did and why.

I found the last one to be like this.....however, the promotional offer was worth the money, the full price definitely is not.

There are so many features in Sonar that a video like this will never cover everything.

My suggestion is to use real examples and put out a series.....who cares if the whole thing costs over $100, I'd pay any day for a quality "tutorial"....not a quick demonstration.

I'm trying to offer this suggestion to SWA so they can improve their product.....but I've always found the Ask video series to be better (sucks they don't have anything for Sonar 8)

the product is good, and after all the complaining regarding "the accent" on previous SWA videos, the voice-over is now "americanized" for the americans, but it almost sounds as if it were done by a voice that had to be run through americanization software.  no biggie, but neither was the accent on previous SWA releases for me.  i too would like some more in-depth tutorials on some of the aforementioned features, like audiosnap, v-vocal, etc

still, the buyer should know beforehand, that all that is sold is absolutely entry-level information for starters.

edit: and that the product isn't finished ;) (sound problems)

On the earlier versions..for me the problem with the accent was that I had to rewind and replay because I did not understand what Stuart said. And Stuart is an intellegent enough person to understand this could be an issue for some. Now some of you advanced users most likely understood what he said was talking about from the get-go. But people new to this had some problems. I highly praised the value of the content. For a newbie it was very informative.
You will get plenty of opinions here which will help in the purchase decision. At least you will be better informed before you buy…but you may also miss the pre-sale price.

Just watched it again.. feels so unfinished and faulty. I really shouldn't have spend that much money on it.

Can't really watch it fullscreen, can't easily access menues, am forced to listen to sudden pauses on the audio, sometimes the voice sounds like crushed to bits and overall it is really not loud enough, have to crank the volume up way to high just for watching this tutorial.

Not recommended.

Re:SWA Complete Sonar 8.5 Release Delay 2010/02/07 16:42:45 (permalink)
Gotta say that I think that the "in depth" description is really quite misleading. I'm by no means an expert, but I can't say I learned very much by watching it other than that I'm really glad I bought it at the offer price and not the much higher price that it was not so very long ago, that I almost went for. I would have been really annoyed if I'd paid that price.

At the least I think it should be re-labelled as an introduction to Sonar 8.5 rather than masquerading as some kind of advanced tutorial and whilst I now understand the screen size issue, at least make the audio a little louder - it was hard to hear properly on my laptop even at full volume.

I also bought the Dim Pro and mastering ones at the offer price and would say that at the offer price these represent decent value, but I'm still glad I didn't pay the full prices.

I would certainly think twice about buying any other SWA videos in future. Sorry guys, I really wanted to like the Sonar one and for it to become my "go to" guide, but it fails to impress on too many levels for me and Scott Garrigus' Power book is a far superior investment for me.

right now it is like this: they had a new customer in me who will not return for any other products.

A professional video should use a professional voice-over artist. Chris's narration sounds like he has a towel in his mouth.

I was happy with the 8.5 video because I learned a few things I didn't know. It was worth the $5. But, until the production values come up to professional standards, I think paying more is asking too much.

I'm so suprised that people here actually think this video is actually 'good'. I don't carre how much it is, it's rubbish!

If you buy something like a ruler in a 1£/1$ store and it snaps when a pencil touches it, do you say "oh it was only 1£/1$, I guess it was ok for the price"? NO, you say it it a piece of crap and it was a waste of money (no matter how cheap).

I purchased the Groove3 Video (Effect Plug-ins Explained) a few days ago and was really happy that I did (I learned something). Can the SWA creators please go and see how this should be done...

i paid around 35 bucks, did learn nothing new although i am a newcomer to sonar and had problems with video size and audio playback.

so there was just to much to prevent any enjoyment, really.

Will there be at least be a fixed version of the vid?
