New Song - "The Crumbled Edge" FINAL MIX - new leads added

Here is a new song I did this weekend.  http://www.soundclick.com...918&songID=9824228

Comments welcomed.  As usual, crank it up.

Update:  I redid the bass using mix of miked bass amp and direct out from the bass amp.

Update 2:  I've replaced the old drum loops with new drum loops.

Update 3:  I've added some new lead on the last chorus and outro.  I've also replaced both rhythm guitars to eliminate the bass bloom that was happening.  I add a stereo widener to the drums for more separation and isolated the snare with left and right reverb tracks for it.
This will be the final mix.  I think I've reached my technical limits and any other changes would be subjective matters of opinion.  Thank you very much for all that contributed their ideas and ears to this song!

nice tones.  Nice separation on the mix and lots of depth.  Sometimes the bass popped out of these computer speakers, which is their fault, but something to be aware of.

Oh, and really nice groove.  I liked this one- almost laid back but w/ enough of an edge to keep the pulse up.  Nice work.

Thanks @.  Can you pinpoint any where the bass pops?  I'm using a sub for the first time and trying to get some sub-sonics into the mix, but it's still trial and error.  In my studio and vehicle it sounds right, but that doesn't mean it's translating well everywhere else.

    Marchos,

it is the second bar of bass lines- kind of blooms.  I think it is just just those notes resonating these little speakers.  I've noticed on other songs, including mine.  Check it on some car speakers - if it doesn't go all flatulent on those it is these speakers.  That's how I test my own songs that do it.  I only had one that it was a problem on.

Thanks @.  I think I know what you are talking about.  I believe it is the rhythm guitar where I am playing a pseudo-bassline and that kinda blooms.  I'll go back and cut some more of it.  I already pulled a bunch from 200 Hz and down out of it.

Mark, you've got a real talent for making an instrumental into a nicely constructed song and not just a jam over chords.  Nice memorable hook and evocative textures.

Wow, Mark, that was great.  You got a really good groove going and just did some phenomenal soloing over it.  I wish I could play guitar half that well... even a quarter   And, while I'm being envious, I also wish I could start AND finish anything that good over the course of a weekend.

    Great track... really enjoyed it.

Oh yeah, very tasty Mark, Love that signature Wessels tone. Nicely arranged piece with plenty of hooks, kept the interest right through.

Nice harmonies at 2:25-ish. I hear a little blues, some Thin Lizzy-esque touches, with a little Celtic feel here and there...lovely blend. Are you playing drums on this one?

No How - Thanks, I've always been pulled to melodic type music and not so much pop type music.

philz - Thanks.  Once I get a good concept everything kind of falls into place rather quickly.  That's why I always record any inkling of a good idea before I lose it forever.  I have hundreds of scrap ideas just waiting to be developed.

James - Thanks.  I didn't realize I had that many influences working at one time.  Not me on the drums, just loops.  I may come back later and have a go of it.

lead guitar is a little buried when it comes in around 20', although the only thing in the middle, the drums are maybe a tad loud. once the solo proper starts then the balance is much better. love the guitar tone, reminds me of Maiden on 'Somewhere in Time' which is my fave of theirs. bass line is cool. it could use a little more variation at times in the drums. that's the very minor crits, mostly it's just plain awesome, a great tune perfectly played!

I like it but I have to say the bass tonality does not do it for me.

I of course cannot and should not say the bass does not fit the piece because it's what you chose.

Great guitar playing Mark. Reminiscent of Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow.

    This is very nice indeed.

The mix and production are sounding excellent to my ears.

Superb guitar playing as usual from you and really tastefull tones from all of them.

Love the groove and the bass lines.

Love this as it is, but vocals would be the icing on the cake.

    Top track Mark.

Thanks Mark.  Appreciate the listen.  I agree with your crits.  Thanks for validating my thoughts.

    Black_Haus, thanks.

Bapu-  Thanks.  What about the bass tonality doesn't hit you right?

John,  Thanks.  All my songs I think would do great with vocals.  Then I remember that I can't really sing or write lyrics, so I do another instrumental.

    Mark,
Kind of gnarly and not enough bottom.

    .
Was it an amp or a sim?

It is an Ashdown Electric Blue 180 amp using the direct out.  I may need to re-eq things.  I'm using a sub for my mixing now and I still haven't quite got the hang of it.  In fact this is my first mix using the sub.

I can relate to what bapu is saying about the bass but the low end of the guitar
work is so strong that in the mix there is no room for the low end of the bass to
(if there was some) to compete. I by no means mean to insinuate that the mix
sounds like a "guitar player" doing the mixing but that is how it sounds.

Very tasty stuff!  Nice full, clean tones, great playing and melodic solos with nice fluidity that carry throughout the song and keep the listener's interest perfectly in focus.

I'm alwasy impressed how you get some gritty distortion, but you keep if from getting lost in the mix.  I like the scales around 2:00

I thought the drums could be a little busier (but then what the hell do I know about drums).

What guitars are you using here?    Cool tune!

Thanks Jimmy.  The issue is that I'm approaching bass differently now.  I'm using an amp to track with and a sub to mix with and I just haven't quite figured it all out yet.  But I'll get there.

    Thanks Radio.

Hi Bob, How are you doing?  Always nice to hear from you.

Daryl,  The scale right at 2:00 is just a pentatonic, but the on runs leading up to it I forced myself to get creative.  I started playing just the same old stuff and felt it needed an extra push there.  I'm sure I'll replace the drums.  These are the same drums as the last project I did and I used that file as a template,  The drums are identical with a few crash and choke cymbals added for this song.  The gritty distortion on the lead is from the perfect match of a classic strat with a Marshall amp.  The rhythm is the Les Paul.

Guitar sounds great Mark! Some great hooks in there. A lot of the lead parts are very lyrical.

Switching over to your new approach on miking the bass and mixing with the subs may have caused you to take a momentary step backwards on your mixing, but I'm sure as you adjust in the long run it will improve your mixes.

Thanks Dave.  Actually I'm not miking the bass cab anymore, I'm using it's direct out which lets me use the bass amp to shape the sound.  But yes, it will be a learning curve and I'm confidant that the end results will be well worth it.

You totally ROCK those guitars! I wonder if they'd actually stand out more if you turned the highs down just a tad on the drum kit, like cymbals and stuff.

Hey juli, thanks for the nice comments.  I appreciate you stopping by.

Hi Dena, thank you for the comments!  I don't know if I'd want to cut any more highs off the drum kit.  It's already losing sparkle.  I will probably replace the drum loops with my own drumming though in the future.
