Yep, I was born with it, and believe me it's not easy having a weird-a$$ last name like mine when you start grade school. You get tough real fast! Bob

I never liked my first name and so that was out of the question. Where else can you name yourself somehting else?.....No telling what answer that might bring. My last name is very generic. Lest just say I can get lost easier than anyone on the planet. Had I taken my mothers maiden name it would have been totally the opposite. I have always had an interest in the heavens and certain passages of one of my favorite books mention how we will all rise, some of us brighter than the others and to different places. I know I am not going to shine like the sun...probably a star instead, so I took to the name Starise.

Yep...so you can see why I can just blend into invisibility. I like it when I am buying something and they ask my name and they look to see if I'm in their system and there are 10 of us on that computer....funny!

jonbuoy quote: I guess it helped you come out of your shell a bit... LOL, yep, that's how it started, first day of Kindergarten. "Hey Bobby Clam, who's your girlfriend, Sally Shrimp or Laura Lobster?" Then in junior high school, Stew, or Bob Lobster, then in the 80's "Rock Lobster", thanks to those goofy B52s! LOL, come to think of it, your offline avatar portrays pretty much how I spent most of my days on the gradeschool playground. In my home town, it's kind of like on The Sopranos, everybody gets a nickname practically from birth, but I had so many different nicknames that luckily none ever stuck very well, so I guess I was actually pretty lucky. See you, Jon, have a good one, brother! Bob

With a last name like Wohlgemut, it wasn't hard. lol In fact, one time I ordered something online to be delivered to Walmart. I didn't think to take the order with me when I went to pick it up. Finally she asked how I spelled my last name. Then she said, 'If you can spell that, then I believe you.' :) I often wish I had a simple last name...

Just hope, if they are indeed separate persons, that any billing doesn't get mucked up. Happened to me a couple of times when I was going through some medical procedures a few years ago. I give people my middle initial and ask them to use it but some businesses either won't or can't and that gets frustrating.

You know how in some businesses when you're setting up an account they also ask you a security question and you give them an answer to the question so they can verify you are who you say you are? Well a couple ask for the spouse's mother's maiden name. In my case it's an old Polish name and those Pole around here can attest that our last names aren't the easiest to spell. In my mom's case the name is 13 letters and starts with 3 consonants. Sometimes when my wife goes into spelling it the reply comes back to her the same as yours, Janet. My mom wanted a simpler name when she married my dad and she got it by 2 letters (from 13 to 11).

Does that name start with Ksc? Some of those are doozies, aren't they? I knew a girl who's last name was Lee. She married a guy named Ksconschevichz (or something like that.) She must have really loved him! lol

Went to buy a car and they had confused my credit rating with someone else. The guy was in deep poo. I keep hoping they will confuse me with a rich guy sometime.

She must have really loved him! lol My late mom's maiden named started with Prz and went on for 10 more letters. There's no simple way around the pronunciation of that name. My last name, which I share with a famous Polish writer, when pronounced in the proper manner is a real mouthful most people can't handle so I used an Americanized version. Really shocked me when I went to close out my dad's estate and I listened in on his answering machine and he had recorded the greeting with the Americanized pronunciation instead of the Polish one I always remember him using. What my wife and I sometimes do when people see our name on a form and wonder about the pronunciation is we tell them it's pronounced 'Smith' as all the letters are silent.

:) That's a good one. Yeah, you get used to saying, 'my last name's........and then just start spelling it right away (if they're writing it down), cause you know they're just gonna say 'huh?!' Unfortunately, we named our youngest son a name that can be spelled 3 ways, so he has to spell them both all the time. Didn't think about that at the time...

yeah, but who else has the same name as famous candy? I fully empathize with Bob's experience in grade school.

space_cowboy in 1973 I moved to a little town called Fairhope Alabama. I used to sit around playing guitar by the pier (see picture below). I was also a fan of certain herbs. This is the pier today. It was a lot less developed back then. Small world...my life-long friend lives there.
