Do you know of a US supplier who will ship to the UK? I followed your link but they will only ship to US territory. Even with shipping cost and import duty this sounds like a great deal.
Cheers,

There are MXL distributors in the UK - I just can't find one stocking the SP1 (not even sure if it's still widely available).

I have googled for MCA SP1 and apart from mod discussions, this mostly brings up eBay sellers shipping from the US and asking around $89 plus $19 shipping to UK.
My thought was that if I could find a 'normal' US-based web retailer (charging the $40 price referred to in this thread) who would ship to the UK then even after shipping and UK tax it would still be a good deal at the current exchange rate.
PSSL have it in stock for $39.95, but as I said previously they will only ship to US territory. They suggested shipping to a US address and having it forwarded, but I don't think I want to get into that.

Failing being able to get one of these mics, I may go for the Red5 RV6, which comes with a shockmount, foam windshield and plastic foam-lined case for £49 + £7.50 UK shipping. This mic also has 100Hz rolloff and -10dB pad switches and has had good reviews in the UK. If anybody else has used one for acoustic and/or classical guitar I would be interested in your experience.

Hi Chris
Like you I could't find an US e bay seller that would ship to Europe. There's no reference to this mike on French ebay, have you tried looking at any other European sites?

Hi Gareth,

Your avatar had me going for a couple of seconds - tried to swat it off my screen .

I have found a US eBay seller who will ship this mic worldwide for $89.95+$19 shipping - but I was looking for it at the $40 cost referred to in this thread. If you buy at this guy's price and take local tax into account, you're into a fairly crowded price point, so buying the SP1 isn't the no-brainer it is at $40 (may still be a bargain though, if it kicks bottom like the chaps say).

The eBay link I found is here.

Cheers

Here's a page with a demo! (It's voice-overs, but it can still give you an idea.) Scoll down a bit. Looks like this mic sometimes goes as the "MCA SP-1". Ooh well, whatcha 'spect... maybe a little Lost in Translation?

http://www.vocalimpactmedia.com/SoundStorage.html

FWIW, to me it sounds clearer, cleaner, and fuller after the mod. Here's the place that does the mods. The guy's name is Jim Williams:

http://www.audioupgrades.com/

Reading around, most of these LDC mic mods are capacitor-quality upgrades, possibly with a more optimized cap value (but more likely not). One could probably search for a similar DIY upgrade. Knowing the cap style would be the main objective. Then, open the MXL/MCA SP-1, find the right caps, pull them, measure them, then buy and install the same-value caps in the upgraded style.

Or, just pay Mr. Williams the going rate.

geez...the mod sounds absolutely incredible. i'd put the quality slightly lower than the AKG C414. the thing is so smooth sounding...

I recieved my pair this evening.. and I have to say..Thanks very much for the recommendation. They are actually very smooth sounding, It really suprised me. I'd put them up against any 200.00 - 300.00 mic that I have. I was concerned about self noise being high but that wasn't any worse than any other mic I have. I noticed that you can induce some hum in them by grabbing hold of the houseing... maybe I hadn't noticed this in other mics as much. Not a concern in normal use though. I wish I had the funds to order a few more. Thanks again for the heads up on this one.

Thanks for the recommendation, guys. Mine just arrived today (stupid UPS guy left it sitting on the step ). This is the first time I've used a condenser mic, so I don't really have anything to compare it to. It does sound better than the cheap dynamic mic I was using, though.

Is there anything I need to pay attention to with a condenser mic? I seem to remember reading that you should allow condenser mics to warm up for a few minutes?

I've tried to answer some of the more common SHS questions:

Phantom power
Keep it covered when you're not using it
Get or make a pop filter (you can get one for about $20).

don't want to pay $20 for a pop filter 'cause you're super-cheap? Well, pantyhose is your new best friend (seriously, doesn't get more transparent and cheap than that. May not look super-cool, but oh well.)

Anyone have any experience with Joe Meek Mic's. I know he makes a great compressor. I seen a few on ebay for under $100 for a large diagram condenser. Its got me intrigued, because he makes great outboard gear

Joe Meek is now owned by PMI AUDIO GROUP, the same parent company that makes STUDIO PROJECTS mics and also TOFT AUDIO.

Here is their LINK

SP Mics are made by 747 Audio a Chinese OEM. I have used and own some SP mics and they are pretty good for the money, but unless you spend a lot more money, you won't get much better than the SP1. I think to top the SP1 you would have to spend over $250 to $300.

Heres one I'm very curious about

Well....................

SP1=$40
2020=$99
C1= $199-229
BlueBird & Baby Bottle=SOLD OUT @ those stoopid Full Compass price's.

So, I have a few SP1's, a 2020, an original C1, an original Baby Bottle, and 2 BlueBirds on their way here from Full Compass. Plus a whole bunch of other top notch mics, but we are talking "Bang for the Buck" mics.

I would say get 2 SP1's. Stereo is good, I like to buy mics in pairs. I think the SP1 is the best deal going.

Ok, so what would be the next level mic to get after sp1?

I have a Rode NTK modified with a quality tube, and its damn smooth, but Im thinking, I want to try the sp1. But, my friend is buying a mic and is willing to spend a little money.

Lixisoft you are the expensive mic owning reference here!

What would be the next first mic he should get if not the sp-1 and if he is down to spend say a few more hundered dollars?

I mean, wut would say sp-1 stand down?

Not much until 414 or neumann?

Oh Geezz...As you know, there is no such thing as a bad mic, some just sound better on one source than another. A few hundred $ more, a few thousand $ more

I love all my mics, there like my kids, they each excell in different ways. But being the mic slut that I am, I will offer an opinion.

One of my favorite designers is Aspen Pittman, the genius behind Groove Tubes. I have a bunch of GT gear...well more than a bunch <G>. I think GT mics are some of the most under rated mics in the market place. I have an original MD1 and an MD1a, both superb tube mics. When coupled with a GT Mic Pre they truly shine. BTW Lance your vocal style would just rock a GT MD1 mic & MP1 mic pre or even a Brick mic pre.

So for my unsung mic award for an FET mic that smokes on vox

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MD1BFET/

And for a Tube mic that smokes on vox and guitar

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MD1BT/

And for a real decent mid priced mic that rivals an AKG 414, and my next step upgrade to an SP1, plus it includes a great ShockMount & Pop Filter

Cool! Thanx Lixi.

After that reply, I think the sp-1 will do him well for now!

That groove tube mic is tempting, but I need the MP1 pre too eh?

So basically, this setup with my tenor, somewhat michael jackson sound is good for R&B vocals? I might have to get it! hehe
