Well, I must say I'm thrilled about the backorder, as since my birthday is 02.14, so I can place an order the next day!

I'm kinda bummed about the backorder because I'm doing a session tomorrow with an acoustic duo and it would have been nice to have a matched pair to work with. But, there's always next time....

I hate to be a downer guys, but I emailed them about my order since I saw the 2 packs were listed as IN STOCK while the singles were listed as available Feb 15th. Here's their reply: Thank you for shopping at pssl.com. Unfortunately, the package is not available either due to the SP-1's not being in stock. According to the manufacturer they are backordered until at least May at this time. Sincerely, Jeneva boo...

I'm keeping an eye on this thread. I'm very glad that PSSL is at least quoting a delivery date. Everybody else seems pretty much to have dropped it. Anybody know how it compares to an MXL2003 (which I already have)? Heck, at 40 smackers I probably should just order it. Maybe two for stereo.

ORIGINAL: Spyda KB They still report a matched pair set as available for US$75 http://www.pssl.com/MXL-SP1-PACK-MXL-Mic-Package-w-2-SP-1-Studio-Mics - KB I always like buying mics in pairs, so that set is a great buy. But I guarantee it is not actually "matched," other than both being the same brand of mic. "Matched Pair" in the mic world specifically implies that someone has gone through a whole mess of mics and tested them to find pairs that share the same frequency curve (each mic is usually a little different, even within the same model). Matching mics this way takes time and skill and is generally not done for free except with fairly expensive mics. The idea with "matching" mics is that some little 2dB frequency irregularity could cause phasing artifacts or stereo weirdness on sensitive stereo recordings. Most of the time most people will not notice the difference when using an "unmatched" set of modern studio microphones, but if you happen to get one that has a little 2dB dip at a particular frequency and another that has an opposite bump at the same frequency, things could sound a little weird, especially if you are doing a wide stereo recording of a sensitive mono source, e.g. a violin in a cathedral or whatever, or if you are doing binaural or MS or other "special effect" kinds of stereo recording. FWIW. Cheers.

I would suggest to those interested to get 'em while the getting's good. I *think* MCA may have been the old house brand of the now-defunct Mars Music (?) These things have way of going out of production or coming back in not-as-good reincarnations... Cheers.

A few people in this thread and others have been buying used mics on ebay. I've been reading about condenser mics and how they are more sensitive to moisture than cardoid mics. Question is, if you buy a used BrandX condenser mic, and you don't have any idea how a good BrandX sounds, is there any way to know that it hasn't been spit on for a year by by an Elmer Fudd-like singer/speaker? IOW, does moisture ruin it so badly that it's obviously damaged or does it degrade the sound quality to varying degrees?

You don't know. Period. Buying used mics off the internet is a crap shoot. I've done it three times and twice I got good deals, maybe just lucky. One was a pair of AKG 414's and I had another one nearly new to compare it with. I felt satisfied with that one after talking to the source a few times. Used for classical recording at berkely Calif. One other is a Sennheiser..pretty old actually a nice pencil omni. I did get one that was assured not to be DOA, it was a lavilier, and there was no way that it was functioning when the buyer shipped it. Luckily I'm pretty good at fixing those sorts of things. Anyway I bought a pair of the MCA SP1's. I do like there response and sensativity. My only issue is the build quality isn't supreme, and you can induce hum in them simply by grabbing the body of the Mic, they sound nice and quiet in normal use though...there is no extreme self noise that I can hear, but I'm using medium quality mic pre's at best. I did a percussion track with them...Am pleased

So then exposure to moisture degrades the sound as opposed to simply killing all the sound. Thanks, that's something good to be aware of. I like my SP1 too, though I haven't done an awful lot with it yet. I built a case for it last weekend though.
