ORIGINAL: LixiSoft One of my favorite designers is Aspen Pittman, the genius behind Groove Tubes. I have a bunch of GT gear...well more than a bunch <G>. I think GT mics are some of the most under rated mics in the market place. I have an original MD1 and an MD1a, both superb tube mics. When coupled with a GT Mic Pre they truly shine. BTW Lance your vocal style would just rock a GT MD1 mic & MP1 mic pre or even a Brick mic pre. If you want a SMOKING deal on a re-branded mic, look into the Alesis AM50, 51, 60 and 61. The 50 & 51 are both FET mics, while the 60 & 61 are Tube. You can pick them up on eBay for under $200, if they're available, because nobody knows what they are, or what they sound like. Those who do, won't sell them. These were $1200-1500 mics new, and they sound like it! They were designed and built by GT, then rebranded as Alesis. I wouldn't sell mine for anything. Corey

Cheap mic preamp that rules....the Studio Projects VTB-1. At one time they were $99, but I think they're $129 now. Great on bass, vocals, and acoustic guitar. It lets you operate in Tube mode, solid state mode, or a blend of both (adjustable). Absolutely awesome.

What about the RANE MS b1?? Took the words right out of my mouth !! Also look for the Symetrix 202....... a real sleeper The GT BRICK, a very good "REAL" Tube preamp with high plate voltages (not starved plate design, like the cheaper ART, Berry, Presonus and VTB-1,) just throw an "ATTY" across the output and dial in your "Tube Creaminess". It's also one of the best Bass DI's around and sounds great behind a POD or other Gtr Modeling box. It really is the only cheap tube pre that is a "Real Tube Pre". Buy one used...if you can find one....there's a reason you never see them used

So basically, this setup with my tenor, somewhat michael jackson sound is good for R&B vocals? I might have to get it! hehe Well Lance, I think your voice would sound great through any vocal chain, you have what I like to call "IT". I really dig your voice, I really do. If I was recording you, GT MD1A or U47 Mic --> LA2A comp --> Neve 1073 Pre..... I bet that would be Magic

I have 3 of the AM51's... you are absolutely right about them.. I got them when MF were offing them from stock for about 140.00 each. I love the off axis response especially. I do have one that started to break-up and distort a bit for no good reason and that prompted me to buy the 3rd for it's back-up. Any suggestions on a place or person that could do a repair?

The owner, Aspen Pittman, answered the phone and we spoke for about 20 minutes, at the end of our conversation he offered to send me some mics and mic pres to try out !!! I mean that is really service I am a customer for life, and they view me as a customer for life, GREAT SUPPORT !!

Thanks corey.. I did do some searches online about a year ago...and I mistakingly thought that GT wouldn't deal with them because (A) they sold the line to Alesis, and (B) they don't do repairs out of warranty especially on lines they sold to Alesis.. I Think I couldn't find a repair or parts listing on their site. It's been awhile and I'll look into it further. Thanks for the tip.

I Think I couldn't find a repair or parts listing on their site. It's been awhile and I'll look into it further. Thanks for the tip. We picked up our AM61 at Mars Music for $50, just before they closed their doors. It came without the shockmount or fancy case, but had the power supply and the cable.... and they didn't think it worked. We called GT, had a nice conversation, and found out GT had purchased the line back from Alesis, when Alesis was going through it's fiscal difficulties. Mailed them just the mic, received it back with a paper invoice... they original tube had broken (not gone bad, BROKEN) at some point in its life. They replaced it, charged us half rate on the bench-time, and had it back to us in less than a week. Did I mention they included the paper invoice in the shipment? No credit card required... just fixed it, sent it back, and waited patiently for us to send out a check. I've since had the opportunity to use other GT products, and they're the real deal! I watch eBay constantly for cousins. I'd love to own another AM61. Corey

ORIGINAL: CJaysMusic Anyone have any experience with Joe Meek Mic's. I know he makes a great compressor. I seen a few on ebay for under $100 for a large diagram condenser. Its got me intrigued, because he makes great outboard gear Cj I have 2 "Meekrophones" a JM37 DP Large Condenser and a JM27 small condenser. I really like the quality of the mics. I have been using the JM37 mainly for vocals and I am liking the quality. The JM27 has been my favorite. It's very versatile - I have used it on everything from acoustic guitar, drums, and vocals. The company the distributes the Joe Meek stuff - PMI Audio is also top notch. I had an issue with my JMP37 - It was under warranty and they repaired it with no questions asked.

There is a link for the mic in this thread. My friend bought it from the link. Its in the first post. It was shippded very fast. The mic is said to have a smooth sound close to akg 414, and, so in that case, I would say it is a total go to for vocals :)

Here's a page with a demo! That demo site is very interesting. After listening to all of the mics on there, my fave is the Heil PR-40 (next to the AKG C414 of course). It sounds fairly flat across the mid's and has a nice, but not overly pronounced bottom end and the highs sound nice and smooth. Anyone here usng a PR-40? How do you like it? I'd also be interested in hearing others' favorites from this site. Thanks.

Mine came in this week (MCA SP-1) My preliminary test reveals a good "honest" sound. The specks show a frequency range of 30hz-20khzs (typical) and the graph shows it fairly flat from 100hz till about 5khz then it start to slope up about 5db til 20k. Its -10db from about 30k then slopes up to 0db at about 85hz. Anyway it sounds close to my AKG 3030 which sold new for $300+ back in the day. Not bad for a $39.00 mic. And talk about FAST SHIPPING Pro Sound and Stage Lighting was incredible. I'm going to order another one before they are discountinued or sold out.

ORIGINAL: Lanceindastudio My projects have 10-12 or more vocals. I record left and right of the same parts on all backgrounds and the lead sometimes for the chorus. This is lot of stereo. I like to do each take separate and try to mimic the take before. It adds human feel to it as the takes arent exact. Ill take this over a two mic recorded stereo take any day. Give me some character. Correct, everybody works different. I like YOUR style. XD I gotta get me one of these mics now. I'm new to this whole pro-audio set-up, but when I've settled in I hope to make some awesome songs.
