SUCCESS! Okay I'm gonna point out the obvious here but sometimes people have problems with this stuff. Always make sure you are TYPING in info like serial numbers. NOT copy pasting them in as this causes problems sometimes. Also make sure you are not mixing up zeros 0 with the letter O. If there are dashes sometimes you have to type them in manually, sometimes the computer will do it for you. That said now BFD is giving me a pop up that is saying it has detected new authorized extra audio content and if I have more stuff to authorize to scan for it now (if so click OK). I do not so I'm just gonna click cancel. Okay I think this is sorted. BRB.

The license manager is now saying the status of that S/N is "Ok". I click the "Kit" menu in BFD and there is my Rock Legends kit. Awesome. Now to play around with it. I'll see you guys in a bit. Cheers!

Oops. Sorry there was one more thing that needed to be done after that. When I selected the Rock Legends kit nothing was loading. I clicked the Options menu (Checkmark) and rebuild database. It did a scan and now when I select the kit it loads. I also seem to have a whole buttload more presets in the Kit list. NOW I can play. Cheers.

Re:Gonna snag the $50 BFD Eco with Rock Legends deal today... 2012/08/06 18:24:33 (permalink)
Okay. This kit sounds WAY better. It's not exactly what I want but it will certainly tide me over until I can afford the Andy John's pack. Now again that is just personal taste. This kit will be perfect for pretty much most people and I'm positive I'll be able to tweak it to do everything I need anyway. For me though I'm looking for something ultra tight, clean and punchy which is why I keep prattling on about that Andy John stuff. This Rock Legends kit is more smooth and vintage sounding and I will be able to use even the raw samples as they will be nice for quite a bit but as an old cheese head rocker (a dying breed... I know) it's just slightly off for my needs but considering all the options in BFD I'd bet I can get some more thwack out of it. BTW I just checked out the "Grooves" button in BFD and there are tons of beats that I actually might be able to use. That has always been a big problem for me in regards to grooves especially in Session Drummer. They were just... not right. This is a massive list and I literally poked around with it for one minute and found a ton of usable stuff. Cool cool and more cool. This is pretty much one of the best deals I have ever gotten in regards to audio production purchases. If I haven't convinced you already DOOO IIIIT!!! It's like the cost of two cases of crappy beer or dinner at a semi decent restaurant. In fact I'm gonna harass all my real life buddies into buying it and I NEVER do that. Cheers.

Good work beepster,
I've been trying to persuade people here of the wonderful world of BFD Eco & BFD2 in my own subtle way for some time now.
I'm expecting a commission check from fxpansion any day now

EDIT: This post was essentially sheer exuberance and I am removing it because I think the people that needed to see it saw it. The gist was I am extremely happy with this purchase and it has finally rounded out my ability to create music again after a very long journey. Buy this software if you can. You will not be disappointed. Thanks again Rail for all your help and stevec who pointed out this deal in the first place and all the awesome folks here on the forum who advised me to look at the BFD brand as well as everyone else on the forum. You all rock. Cheers.

Cripes... these lists of grooves go on and on and on and they are organized in an actually useful way. So good. It's also nice the quantize, humanize, simplify and swing controls are RIGHT there. Now I just gotta learn how to build a track. BTW to get at what I'm talking about simply hit the "Grooves" button at the top left corner of the screen. Right now I'm just scrolling through the Metal grooves. I could put an album together easily with these beats and fills and it wouldn't even come across as basic or generic. Awesome.

Ya bro... this is gonna be killer. I just went through some more of the genre grooves and it's all usable. Now I just gotta figure out how to get this into recorded format or send the pieces to PRV. Had to deal with some other stuff tonight though. I'll keep updating as I move along. Hey... I might even get to toss something down in the Songs forum soon instead of just constantly running my mouth up here. Wouldn't that be sumthin'? ;-)

As far as building your drum tracks from the midi grooves goes Beepster you can drag loops/grooves into Eco's drum track lane which runs across the middle and arrange them how you like but you can't do any proper drum editing such as moving, adding or changing the velocities.  But just like all the other drum VSTi's you can very easily drag the loops into sonar's midi track and work on them in the piano roll.

Steve.

Have you signed up to the fx forum yet? The fxpansion crew are always around and are very helpful.

Having said that there is obviously much less traffic there than there is on this forum so you might get quicker responses on here.
Especially now as there are more and more fxpansion users on here.

Just catching up here. Actually, I'm quite jealous, because shortly after getting a load of drum stuff, with respect to both SessionDrummer and BFD Eco, I then got a load more synth stuff and my experimentation with my new drums came to a halt. I need to remedy that situation somehow.

I am a little bit like a startled squirrel, not knowing where to jump next, having been confronted by a big hairy black bear!

So do I! Not only is it a kickass recording but some of Tommy Bolin's BEST guitar playing for sure...

Completely agree on both accounts!    I haven't listened to that album in years, so I really need to burn it to CD.

BTW... this is actually sort of on topic since Tommy Bolin played with Billy Cobham, Billy Cobham is a drummer, and BFD Eco is a drum synth.    Now, Beepster, your mission is to program a drum track in the style of Billy Cobham using BFD eco.

Re:Gonna snag the $50 BFD Eco with Rock Legends deal today... 2012/08/07 21:41:17 (permalink)
Okay... spent the past few hours reading and absorbing the manual. Sorry for the formatting and I'll try to insert breaks on this post later but this is relevent to anyone trying to load BFD Eco into Sonar...

Using BFD Eco as a VST plugin in Sonar Launching BFD Eco 1. With a project open, use the Insert menu to insert BFD Eco as a soft synth: Insert • Soft Synths • [VST plugins folder name] • BFD Eco 2. In the synth properties dialog box that appears, you can choose to set up BFD Eco’s additional outputs in the Sonar mixer. Unfortunately, this dialog box does not include an option to create all the required stereo and mono outputs, so it is recommended to choose ‘All Synth Audio Outputs: Stereo’, and afterwards manually change the stereo channels created for BFD Eco’s mono 1-16 outputs to mono channels. If you do not know how to do this, please consult your Sonar documentation or contact Cakewalk support. By default, all channels in BFD Eco are routed to the Master channel in the BFD Eco mixer, which is hard-wired to the first stereo output (output 1-2). In order to separate channels into discrete outputs, you must first route the relevant channels to the desired BFD Eco outputs in the BFD Eco mixer. If you need to use BFD Eco’s MIDI Out function, remember to check the ‘Enable MIDI Out’ checkbox in the synth properties dialog. 3. If the ‘MIDI Source’ checkbox was not left checked in the dialog box, you need to create a MIDI track and route its output to BFD Eco. If you encounter any problems performing the steps above, please consult your host’s documentation or contact the manufacturer’s tech support channels – BFD Eco operates in the same way as any other multiple-output instrument plugin. Recording BFD Eco’s output as audio To do this you either need to use Sonar’s mixdown functions – make sure you enable the Offline button before performing any offline or non-realtime export. It is also recommended to disable the ‘Use Fast Bounce’ setting in Sonar’s preferences. Alternatively, you can use BFD Eco’s audio export feature when exporting Grooves.

BTW I'll be tossing the link to the manual and probably that little blurb into the first post of this thread as well as directing people to Rail's posts to save any random googlers and forum users some time. I however cannot stare at this computer screen for much longer so that will have to wait for another day. Cheers.

Re:Gonna snag the $50 BFD Eco with Rock Legends deal today... 2012/08/08 23:27:47 (permalink)
Just a quick update. I managed to toss together a CRAZY drum part using just the standalone mode and the metal grooves. Took me about an hour (I was hoping to share it with ya'll but it just wasn't gonna happen tonight). I used the Rock Legends Big and Roomy preset (or whatever it's called... but something like that) and it was pretty much perfect sounding. I enabled Anti Machine Gun mode and turned up the Humanize knob to about 11 o'clock and it sounded pretty gosh darned real. Obviously it would be better to do this stuff within X1 using the PRV but I wanted to get a grip on how to use BFD as a standalone first. The track builder is... well it's a little annoying and it takes some learning but once you figure it out it is very usable for basic structure building. It doesn't exactly work in a very typical fashion so that's why I said you gotta learn it but it is well explained in the manual. Just make sure you have the "Track" button enabled or you won't be able to use it at all (that was tripping me up last night). Export was simple... a little too simple actually but again standalone mode isn't really the way it's supposed to be used. Once I exported I had a RAW stereo WAV which was easy peasy to load into X1. If you do it this way however it seems you have to close BFD or else it'll tie up your interface (learned that the hard way). Once in X1 it played back beautifully. I would only recommend doing things this way if you just want to have something to jam along to. Otherwise just use BFD as a plugin for any real work. Cheers.

Re:Gonna snag the $50 BFD Eco with Rock Legends deal today... 2012/08/09 02:45:29 (permalink)
I might be wrong but I'm fairly sure the "humanise" function will only work on the grooves that are being played internally.
Meaning, midi that is created in your sequencer or dragged from Eco into a midi track can no longer be humanised.

What humanising basically does is to place certain notes slightly behind or ahead of it's correct grid placement.
Obviously it can't to that with midi that is being fed in to it.  Unlike BFD2, BFD Eco doesn't allow you to import standard midi files so you can't humanise midi files created elsewhere by loading

them in to Eco.

Just bumping this to the top because the Eco/Rock Legends deal is almost over (Aug 31). Also I wanted to review some of my notes and the advice others have given here. I just installed the Zildjian Gen 16 Z-Pack which is also on special over at AudioMidi and it sounds great. Cheers.

Hey MCC thanks for that link! I just watched the video and am glad I did. I haven't explored SD3 or the Andy Johns kit I bought, nor installed the BFD ECO with Platinum Sample yet. Still for $20 it seems like a cheap way to try that path, too. Thanks again Michael

Re:Gonna snag the $50 BFD Eco with Rock Legends deal today... 2012/09/26 18:33:54 (permalink)
I'm posting this here so I have it for quick reference. The hilarious part is when googling for solutions my own thread popped up. lol... Anyway for those who may stumble across this and not know what the frack I'm talking about I upgraded to X2 and could no longer find BFD. Then I reinstalled BFD and scanned but installed the wrong version. Then I installed the correct version but STILL not find BFD 64 bit... Solution in next post...
