ORIGINAL: geoman Can someone tell what the difference is between the Alesis Multimix 16 USB 2.0 vs the firewire model ? Any recommendations as to which one is preferable? USB 2.0 is the newer model. It can do up to 88.2k and 96k sample rates. The FW version only does 44.1k and 48k rates. The drivers for the FW version can be buggy on some systems (as seen in this and other threads). I haven't seen anyone comment on the USB driver quality yet. The FW version has SPDIF output, but the USB doesn't appear to have one based on the pictures. The devices seem the same in almost every other aspect.

The difference is speed and size. The FW is going to handle way more channels at once into your pc. I think the usb only handles like 2-4 channels at once. With the fw , you get all the channels at once. Think of it as a comparison to this- DSL vs. Cable, same function but dsl doesnt have the bandwith. Same goes for usb vs firewire. If your going to do alot of tracking, Id go for the FW

The new Multimix USB 2.0 models use the faster version of USB (up to 480 mbps) and will have zero problems handling 16 channels in/2 channels out. There are other quality multi-channel audio interfaces using USB2 on the market as well.

Sven I can understand your point of USB 2.0 being "enough" but Both mixers are msrp $599 US, why wouldn't you take the better performer? Its a proven fact that FW is 30+ percent faster in data transfer in both directions, it's not theory. Look it up. A majority of todays interfaces are FW and thats not by mistake.

I tried them briefly. Could not get a reliable latency. Result was that every time hitting play might crackle or not, unless raising the buffer size. Then sometimes the latency was too high. Confirmed that by running the CEntrance utility and found that latency varied by several ms on each measurement. Also found that sometimes using the CEntrance utility causes a system crash. So I went back to the previous drivers. Bill B.

That's EXACTLY the problem I'm having! Whew, I'm glad it's not just me. So, I don't know that there's a way for me to back out the firmware on the board. It sounds like you were able to just go back to an earlier set of software (windows) drivers to solve the problem. What version are you running now?

The firmware version has not changed for a long time, so don't worry about it. The drivers I use were published January, 2008. I use ASIO; the WDM drivers blue-screen for me. Would you please report your findings to Alesis? And also to rgriffith@numark.com who was said by Jim Norman of Alesis (in posts on Harmony Central about the io26 and io14, which use the same drivers) to be a very helpful guy for Alesis tech support. Best to tell them your detailed operations and results. Bill B

Hi, New user here...but I think for the most recent post it would be useful for the people who do have the multimix firewire working to post their specs(with firewire hardware/drivers) and driver versions for alesis. I've heard that older drivers/firmware might work better but don't know where to get those files. This way people can quickly see if someone who has the same system was able to fix their problem...potentially ruling out miscellaneous problems without having to sort through all 9 pages. I read about 6 and then decided to ask for this, if it's not too much trouble. I am at the stage of deciding which driver to try and install again to get this thing to work. I've cleaned off all alesis programs/drivers and updated my computer. Previously my computer has recognized the mixer, but not allowed me to make the mixer my sound card...don't know why. I have gotten my mixer to work on a another older computer, though. Has anyone tried using a SIIG firewire expresscard? Maybe, that's the problem; however, my computer can see the firewire card and mixer. I have: Dell Inspiron 1501 AMD turion 64x2 1.8Ghz 2 GB Ram Win Xp SP2 SIIG Firewire ExpressCard Any help would be appreciated, Alex

To use it as a regular Windows sound card (WDM) you need "system sounds" to be "enabled" in the Alesis control panel. See this post. Bill B.

I too have a problem with the newest driver, same as buckethead777. The driver installs correctly, Windows discovers a device called "Alesis Firewire" (it detected "Multimix ....." devices with the old driver versions). The firmware updater says "waiting for device", the Alesis Control Panel is empty. I'm using a 2005 driver from the CD, but I have sound quality problems with that version. Of course Alesis don't answer my emails. Should have bought a MOTU or a Mackie.

Hi guys, this is response to reply I got on digifreq in the soundcard forum for alesis multi 8 firewire. thanks beagle for this link. I havent been here for a while. If I remember right I didn't have the problem I described with My alienware area 51 and XP home. But I do have the problem with Vista premium. although I did have to power off the multimix 8 and back on sometimes. I got this Emachines desktop and added another HD and brought the ram up to the max 2 gigs. and installed a firewire card from worst buy. In device manager its called a "AGERE" I wonder if thats the problem? The alesis site names "adaptec" and some other one for compatible ones. This is my post on digifreq. http://www.digifreq.com/digifreq/discuss/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2391 In Vista I did have to disable the onboard realtech card to use the alesis. And now as stated in digifreq the install doesnt seem to complete but the alesis shows up on desktop and in sonar it shows up in audio options but it doesnt show up in vista audio properties. sometimes the sonar project file will play and sometimes I get this horrific buzzing or grinding sound. Its Monday and Im going to call Alesis and talk to one of thier tweaker geekers. Greg

Hi Altima..., I don't know where to download them from. Actually, the io26 drivers are exactly the same and Alesis posts the old drivers for that. Trying email. Greg, If you want Vista to see your Alesis, you will need to enable system sounds in the Alesis control panel. Also see this post. Bill B.

I just bought this one through Newegg cheap: Rosewill 2+1 PCI to 1394a It uses a VIA chipset. I also have an Emachine that has FW builtin to the motherboard and it used a VIA chipset that's worked flawlessly under WinXP.

My Multimix Firewire issues, Sony Vaio FR285M, SB audigy PCMCIA I've been trying for a while now to configure my software to run the wdm output to MM. I had great problems at first with drivers March 2008 and Origonal disc, they would install but wouldn't configure and I only had a few sec of audio after switching on. Firmware update or control wouldn't comunicate "Waiting for device". This sound normal from reading forum. But then I remembered I had download drivers for a friend a few years ago. I installed and found that the firmware version was 1.2 (Seems you can't upgrade from 1.2 to 2.0 directly) anyway installed upgraded to Firmware 1.3 then to 1.4. Great I thought, all was looking good, so continued the upgrading to the latest firmware and drivers, wished I read this forum first. New drivers and firmware work for a little bit longer and now have configuration on control. messed around with settings, lots of shutdowns and restarts to reconfigure, but after a few days and reading the forum gave up. I now in the process of trying older drivers. I only have 3 Driver versions available (why don't alesis post older drivers) and I have good results with Version 6/23/2005. Audio is reasonable for my purpose but I can't get the control panel to function, so I can't setup latency etc. Anyway I'm leaving things as they are for now unless anyone has Jan 2008 drivers or any other versions available. Or does anyone now how to take the firmware back from v2.0 to 1.4

Hey there everyone, Like some of you, I'm getting inconsistent pops/clicks in my recordings and playback, and I'm getting random BSOD with different error messages. I've contacted alesis about obtaining previous drivers but haven't gotten a response. Would someone by kind enough to send me a driver (any driver) released before the most recent March of 2008? I would be eternally grateful. I'm pretty much stuck with this unit, so I have to make due with what I can. Thanks!
