Born to Fly--dedicated to Jimmy Gentry

I wrote a song.  I mean, with real lyrics and all.  And let's just say I had a little help with it. :-)  I hope you enjoy it.

Born to Fly

edit:  I sent this to Jimmy, with my vocals...3 days later he sent it back to me, so well done.  Now I'm dedicating it to him.

Enjoy your wings, Jimmy!  :)

Well dang... You did write a song? With words and everything? It makes me think of a Ford commercial :-)  "Built Ford tough..." Born to fly.

It's a pretty one... I listened a few times, and turned it up, and listened again. What kind of plug was used to get that bass sound? :-) Built Ford tough... Born to run, like a rock! Good Job!!

p.s., I'm a little dissapointed that you didn't let me sing harmony behind Jimmy... :-( I think our voices together would have been sweet. He sounds good though.
p.p.s., the alusion to a commercial is "high praise..." Think about it? Ford pays "millions" of dollars to get you to watch a 30 second or a 60 second snippet. A LARGE part of the appeal of that snippet is the audio? So if there's a catchy tune? That sticks in your head? i.e., the hook? "Like a rock?" Then you remember "their product..." So when I say it reminds me of a commercial? I can't really think of any higher praise one could receive.

Nice song.  The words are really great!  I like the chorus - the harmonies fill out the chorus nicely.  Nice job!

    Hi, Janet,

Wow, talk about both beautiful and inspirational!  Fantastic performances by both you and Jimmy on this and a perfect mix to boot.

Outstanding writing, playing, singing and production!

Very nice, and your friend Matt, that inspired the song, sounds like he could really teach us all a lesson about appreciating life.

    Beautiful work!

Fine job, Janet. Words are excellent, melody and mix super. The only comment I want to make is that there is a high (very high, like dog whistle) whine or whistle at the end, and I think it is there in the middle of the song once or twice. I'll listen again tomorrow to be sure, who knows, could be my system or the fault of the soundclick compression, but I thought I would mention it. But you sure got this writing and recording thing all figured out.

Fault of my system is a possibility, since just last night my cd burner quit on me. I use it a lot, not like the average person, but to run off twenty or thirty copies for distribution at one time, so it is not a big surprise. And I am getting a Plexor from tigerdirect for $49, which is not a bad deal for a top of the line type burner. I will be replacing this tower in the next year or so from necessity. It has served me well for five years, I have so much stuff jammed into it there isn't even room for dust, and it is being used for things it really wasn't designed for. But they only last so long, and then the big crash hits, blue screen, or no screen, and hopes that the last backup was not too many days ago.

I wouldn't waste this on a Ford commercial though.

That artifact you hear is there. I don't hear it as a
whistling sound but a bit of a sort of phasey sound.
It's the acoustic guitar. I worked so hard on this song
finaly got to a point with the acoustic where I said
    that's enough (for now anyway).

Between finger/fret noise and ambient noise

Robby, well dang, I did, didn't I?  Miracles never cease!  lol  But to tell you the truth, this song was all done before I even turned around twice.  The ONLY thing I did was write the music and lyrics and sent Jimmy a ridiculously bad demo of it and he took it from there.  But don't worry, we can do other collabs, if I can ever catch you between your own hits. :-)  It's funny you mentioned commercials cause I've been thinking about those lately in regards to music...

Thank you, guitartrek.  That hook is what came to me first (which is normal for me) and I figured for once I should try to write the whole song instead of just one line.  I was rather surprised that I could do it.

Bob, thank you.  The performances are all Jimmy.  And he improved on the chord structure I made up.  I wish all my songs were this easy for me and turned out this well. :-)

Albert, thanks for listening.  Again, I owe this one to Jimmy.  I hope you can replace your system soon.  I know how tough it is working with a machine that crashes all the time.

    Scott--whoever, whatever!  lol

Jimmy, once again, thank you.  I never in a million years could have done this this well.  I can't say how much I appreciate you doing this.  I absolutely love it. :-)

hey well done Janet, so you only wrote the music and lyrics, huh? trust you to do the easy bit! ;-)

it's nicely played and recorded, the vocals fit the music well, without ever really taking off - c'mon, it was born to fly! C+W isn't really my thing (you'll be shocked to hear) but i'd love to hear a big ending, kinda like plugged-in Garth Brooks, all stadium drums and electric steel/slide guitars.

I know exactly what you are saying there. I think all of us in this forum fall into the trap of allowing the perfect to get in the way of the very good. And it is not distracting or detrimental, it is just there. I probably would have not noticed were it not for the recent computer problem on this end, kinda like when you hear the first squeak in a new car and suddenly you can hear every little noise, eventually you either turn the radio up louder or go completely out of your mind.

So, no worries, but it is good to know it was not just in between my own ears....I'm not losing my mind. Or am I?

    Janet,

This is great – a perfect blend of a simple but sweet melody and touching heartfelt lyrics. Vocal is super as well. No matter how you analyze it, break it down or tweak it, at the core of it all, it’s a really good song that has a life of it’s own. Bravo to you and bravo to Jimmy for adding his gift to your music. Of all I’ve heard from you, this one really rings my bell.

There are times when it just dosen't matter if things aren't so tight and polished and perfect. The vibe is all that matters. This ballad is a perfect example. And even though I would be tempted to suggest vocals "a la Crosby Still and Nash" or this and that, I certainly would not change anything at all for fear of losing that magical vibe. Janet, I am impressed. This is a beautiful ballad. Jimmy, there you go again with that rich, lush and smooth signature sound of yours. Great collab and please, both of you take a bow. I am giving you a standing ovation. Bravo!

Mark--yep, I figured it was my turn to take the easy road for a change.  And I just LOVE not having to deal with the mix!  :-)  I hear ya about the big ending.  Who knows where this will go.  But I personally like it the way it is.  Something about hearing someone else sing and play my song without me having to pull my hair out over it...well, it's a good feeling. :-)

Thanks Freddy.  Those lyrics (the fact that I could write them) even surprised me!  ;-)

Thanks Mike.  I love it when things come together like this.  Doesn't happen often enough, but it's nice when it does!  :-)

No, you're not, Albert.  Not quite yet anyway. :-)

Thanks Tim.   But 90% of the praise goes to Jimmy for this one.

Thank you Manny.  I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks so much, JC.  I appreciate it.  I was just floored when he sent me this yesterday.  Another collab that just 'happened.'  And so extremely well-done.

         Thanks JC
You make a very good point. Its funny that sometimes
perfect doesn't sound as good. I usually am extremely
critical of myself. These performances are all me and were
only meant to be scratch tracks. The thing is I went at this
    so hard.

After I did all the scratch tracks it was going to be time
to get to work on the song. Quantize, pitch fix. do this,
do that and on and on. But something happened in me
I just said "no" I aint going to do that.

There are just things that I didnt do but it seems
weird to look back at it now. I usually am thinking
about fixing a track as I'm playing it. You know?
laying down the piano knowing all along it's going
    to be quantized.

Nope no quantizing was done on the piano. Then I
was doing the harmonies thinking the same
thing, yeah? I'll be pitch fixing those babies.
    Nope. no pitch fix.

There are just so many things I didn't do. No master
comp or limiting is another. I'm actually amazed at
the outcome given the fact that this was done in about
one day and a half start to finish.

It's much like "my maker" took over and said this
is how its going to be. It totally drained me both
emotionally and physically. A song was born when
janet wrote it. I wasn't planning on being the singer
or the piano player and certainly not being the only
    player.

But something happened I took over as if this was in
my hands and I will take charge. The thing is I think
this was actualy in the hands of "you know who"
and I happened to be the do'r.

Completion of it is almost sad. It's like what will
I do now? That happened to me once before
and it was downright depressing. however
this time it don't feel so bad.

I need some rest right now, I feel like I've ran
a marathon or something. It's funny, Janet
sent me this email and said "you asked for it"
    in it was this song.

I think her and the man above ganged up on me.
she sent me the song and he said "jimmy" this is what
you are going to do with it.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for your
support. I'm truly glad to know you. And not only that
but you are such an asset to the songs forum too.

I'll take a bow for you but it feels weird to do it.
I just don't feel like it was jimmys skill. Maybe
his passion. Yeah that's it passion.

Really nice catchy song, I really like the run into the choruses, the guitar is superb and gives a really nice rolling feel to the whole thing.

A pleasant sounding mix, a bit like Mark I think the choruses could use a bit of dynamic emphasis to bring them out some.

Other than that a really tuneful song and an enjoyable listen.

    Well done you two.

of her own. I prefer a personal thanks to each of you
but I don't want to hog the show.

The very important thing for me is to know what your
views are and short of some minor suggestions they
    are all saying well done.

One person mentioned a "big" production and I can see
that as an option I didn't want to take it too far as to
the have the production mean more than the song.

      Thanks everyone

And to think I offered to help you with lyrics.  You certainly don't need any help, at least from me.  This is just beautiful.  I thought it is a big production.  I can't think of anything I'd change.  I mean it's no "Jazz The Funky" lyric but...  LOL!!  Janet, will you still talk to us when your songwriting becomes famous?   Jimmy, beautiful playing and production.  Gheesh, this is great!

Jimmy, step in all you want.  :-)  I may have written it, but I never could have made it sound this good.  And the subtle tweaks you added took it up a notch too.

Warren, well, sometimes they just come together like this.  Nothing fancy or clever cause, well, I guess I'm not too fancy or clever myself.  :-)  And even IF my songwriting becomes famous, I'll still just be me and will be happy to hang out here with some of my favorite people. :-)

    Thanks, John.  :-)

Nice job, both of you.   So you just back handed the lyrics off just like that, Huh ... and Jimmy just took it from there.  Very touching tune. I think you both were on the same vibe.   Great work.

Yep, just like that.  I never expected this at all, but I was sure tickled when I heard it!   The words just came together too, which is unusual.  But Daryl Crowley's advice in another thread made it work.  He said to just write out what you want to sing about...in paragraph form.  I had the chorus pretty much done but had no idea where to go from there.  Then I started thinking about people and only wrote about 4 words before I could see the song forming itself.  It was easy from there. I hope he sees this soon. :-)  Anyway, thank you, Jim.
