I live in Houston Texas
We have a huge Asian population (in addition to the hispanics)
I would be remiss to claim Bo Luc Lac as an American Dish when in fact it is a Vietnamese dish

Some people call me Maurice

Great musicians.  Good comedians (like the oh-so-subtle Benny Hill).  Terrible food.

Why?  Does the terrible food make for a sense of humor and incite writing music?

Ohhhh c'mon Space ... you know darn well that they are not original musicians and are ... at best ... really good students and copies, as is befitting Cambridge and Oxford talents and originality.

Comedy ... probably the best. You can go as far back as Micahel Bentine and the Goons in the 50's and find surreal ... it's all in the mind, you know ... stuff that really was a forerunner of what television had for you, and Terri Gilliam became that person on Monty Python, that helped blend both media really well, while creating its own insanity along side of it.

Food ... if you call fish and chips food, like Americans call hamburger and fries, food, then ... you are way worse off than I am.

Idiocy? ... lots of it, and very enjoyable, and you can see above and Neil Innes any time.

Ohh yeah ... satire ... goes with the comedy thing above.

Theater ... the best in the world and also th emost experimental!

Film ... Very good, once you get out of the big productions and into the folks that really want to make a film!

Life ... I hear it's over rated. Not sure that I could live with an AC/DC fan next door to me. I probably would rip his ears back with Amon Duul and something else noisier to shut him up!

Women ... never met a "brit" ... and really, other than Julie Christie that I am still in love with, I couldn't careless for any of them!

Ohh ... victorian literature ... english women are never like that anyway!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Actually it fits ... it means with so much sugar in it that you can get sick off it! It helps make Americans fat!

Labskaus - a delicacy of Northern Germany

As I recall from the one time i tried it in Hamburg:
- Brine cured beef
- Herring
- Beets
- Pickles
- Eggs
- Pickles
All pureed to the consistency of baby food
Then skillet fried like a hamburger
and served with pieces of Herring, a Fried Egg, generous portions of pickles....

There is plenty worse than Brit Food.

hehehehe

I have never been to the UK, the only exposure I have to it is TV and those UKians here....scary isn't it?:)

I have the impression that I would be like an astronaut visiting another planet.

America is a really big place and so depending on where you end up the food can be different. I can say that if you look you will find good food . Cooking is one of my natural fortes and I guarantee that if you ate at my house you would eat very well and not go away hungry.

Most foreigners visiting here eat at all of the wrong places and think all we do is ingest fatty foods and sugars. There is plenty of unhealthy food here to be found and plenty of people eating it, but looking for those places with high customer ratings pays off.Stay away from the chains and look for the highly recommened independently owned places. I live in the North East  in the farming capital of the northeast. Good food isn't tough to come by here.

When my wife and I were recently visiting another city about 50 miles away. We ate at a few pubs and they all had good food...and beer. I couldn't help but think of how that probably came from "over there". The pubs we went to were really like good eaterys that sold beer and not the other way around.

Ok - name some true American food.
Based on what you have said, it would have to be a Native American dish

Deep fried turkey is just one...and it's so good one doesn't need to list two.

I haven't been around the world but I can't imagine better food anywhere
than in the southern US. Can't imagine anybody that has ever eaten southern
cooking that wouldn't agree.

I grew up on it.  mmmm...

most everything's fried.  to a crisp!  and salted!

I remember when I first got to Texas and had some ham.  I couldn't figure out why in the world it didn't taste salty!  back home all pork is salt cured.  here in Tejas they use other chemicals for preservatives.  it did NOT taste right!

As someone who is also from the deep south I can attest to that food down there.

My grandmother made the best chocolate pie ever though.Pecan and peach pie were more common.Bananna pudding was also a favorite.Never was much for mince meat pie or any pie with meat in it.

Buttermilk bisuits, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, collard greens, snap beans, yellow garden squash sectioned and stir fried blackeyed peas. Chicken and dumplings, pork chops, southern sweet tea. Yumm.

One of my all time favoties from the south though is fresh caught brem or catfish fish fried up crispy. Home made slaw and hush puppies. One twist I learned since then is to put a cooked shrimp in the hush puppy.

When I came up here my wifes dad would put a whole cow in the freezer and they ate steak like it was going out of style. Their idea of a good meal was a huge steak,a big pile of mashed potoatoes, and plenty of fresh veggies. Then a half hour later they were asking you if you wanted ice cream. I still think a T-bone steak dinner is right up there with the best.... I am getting hungry now.

Spacey, never had a deep fried turkey.I would like to try it some time. I use the oven bags that you put the turkey in. The meat practically falls off the bone after three hours in the oven in one of those.

you don't like gravy on your biscuits??????  you're definitely NOT from the south then!!!

and for the record - just in case you or anyone else doesn't know.  the gravy I'm talking about is white gravy made from shortening, flour, milk and it's best if it's also made with crumbled sausage and made from the grease in the pan you cooked the sausage from!

I'm not really picky where it originated from to me good is good. We have borrowed a lot from a lot of places. Probably the single biggest melting pot in the world. If you are in NY you know this. Italian,French,Chinese,Indian, and then we add our own to it....just good food. Not much from the souther food persuasion made it to NY, but man, if you haven't ever had southern food you ain't lived ;)

Great musicians.  Good comedians (like the oh-so-subtle Benny Hill).  Terrible food.

Why?  Does the terrible food make for a sense of humor and incite writing music?

OK what about the musicians and the commedians? Admittedly there are some really good musicians that come from the UK. The humour is funny in a quirky sort of way. Mr. Bean was funny for 5 minutes but after that I tired of it.

I think Strummer and Jonbouy run rings around Mr. Bean...Bapu tries god bless his soul.

Can I be totally honest? I used to watch Benny Hill for the girls.

I guarantee you that apple pie made by my grandmother will be a completely different thing than anything a northern or foreign cook would make!  It would NOT taste the same!

I'm guessing she fried it, right? Frying things to a crisp seems to be theme here...

I haven't seen Benny Hill's shows on TV for decades..Mr Bean is ancient stuff too.  There are some superb stand-up comedians in the UK; Rhod Gilbert, Michael McIntyre, Lee Evans, Bill Bailey, Dylan Moran, Peter Kay, Eddie Izzard, Omid Djalili..etc etc.

2nd series of 'Episodes' starts tonight btw, really liked series one.
