I don't go for this whole "My country makes better food!" nonsense.  I have a very simple test:  If I like it, it's good food.  If I don't, I won't eat it.

Reece, they just don't know brother....

I'll add- Apple pie. Southern Apple Pie...as American as it gets and if
one anywhere in the world could beat that I'd kiss their butt in public and give
'em a week to draw a crowd.

OOOOHHHHH MAN!

which also reminds me of Fried Apple Pies my mom & granny used to make.  I'm sure that's probably an ancient Eurpoean derivative (most southern recipes are) but man, I loved them thangs!

and my granny could make the BEST buttermilk biscuits you ever put in yer mouth or sopped up gravy with!!!

man I miss her!

Everytime I hear "Cinnamon Girl" I think of moms apple pie!
Where it came from don't mean beans Reece...you know that. Just like Mexican food....we
make it American and it ain't nothin' like it is in Mexico. We bring good things to life! Batteries not included.

....so, we have established that eating Turkeys and putting apples in a pie were invented in America and any other country's food isn't any good unless it is cooked by an American.

I'm glad that's all straightened out.

No. I don't believe that was established by us. It was a correct answer to your request for
somebody to name 1 American food and I did. Fried turkey.
I will tell you this....If you ever decide that you'd like to determine if southern cooking is good food-not better- but damn good eaten...well we have hospitality to go with it and you're welcome anytime around these parts...and doesn't matter if ya bring your attitude with it 'cause it'll go away on it's own I'm thinking.

No attitude here sir - my original discussion was about Indian food being reinvented in the UK. The question about American Food was directed to another forum member.
I'm sure that your Turkey is fabulous and if I make it down there I would love to join you and I will bring the beer. :)

Most excellent Daryl!

I think I should also add; DO NOT attempt to deep fry a turkey if you don't have experience or there is nobody around that does. This is a REAL serious warning.

Naturally most realize it is a large bird and placing one in a large pot of very hot oil is
not a real safe thing to do.
It is a process that has been known to result in very bad injuries and property damage.

FYI. :)

I will remember not to place my large bird in a large pot of very hot oil.
I'm sure she would be livid.

I'm not sure the current Mrs daryl1968 would be happy about being referred to as 'large'

Same here. I'll also bet that if you want the best food a country has to offer, the last place you'll find it is in the capital city.

That's what puts the irony in the "As American as Apple Pie". Putting apples in a pie was happening several hundred years before the US was established..........

I guarantee you that apple pie made by my grandmother will be a completely different thing than anything a northern or foreign cook would make!  It would NOT taste the same!

I'm guessing she fried it, right? Frying things to a crisp seems to be theme here...

Except, rather ironically, 'crisps'

I gather that in Americano cuisine, crisps are chips and chips are fries.

So really, you should fry everything to a chip until they're crisp

You were doing alright with the pie talk, but see that combo right there - man, that's just plain wrong. It's right up there with syrup on your ham. Much as I am an admirer of the American "can do" atttitude, you need to learn that there are times when because you can doesn't mean that you should  ;)
you don't like gravy on your biscuits??????  you're definitely NOT from the south then!!!

and for the record - just in case you or anyone else doesn't know.  the gravy I'm talking about is white gravy made from shortening, flour, milk and it's best if it's also made with crumbled sausage and made from the grease in the pan you cooked the sausage from!

mmmmmm....

Yeah, I'm familiar with this gravy from my visits to your side of the pond. I've never tried it, but I'm sure it must taste better than it looks or your description of the ingredients. Unlike many of my fellow countrymen I'm not particularly obsessed with cups of tea, but that said, if I was looking for something warm and wet to dip my biscuit in it would be a veeeeerrrryyyyyyy loooooonnnnngggggg time before my thoughts turned to gravy ! :)

The Reuben Sandwich- great name for a sandwich. I'm also partial to the Philadelphia Cheese Steak Sandwich.

I reckon the differences between Britain and the UK are diminishing. Both countires are very diverse and serve pretty much everything nowadays. How many Brits in the US? How many Yanks in the UK?

And British comedy is definitely more "American" now. Yeah, you still have the occasional Mighty Boosh and whatnot but there are just as many fringe American shows.

I remember the F-111's coming out of Lakenheath, (and Upper Heyford) I always thought that I wouldn't like to recieve a delivery from one of those.  Eerie looking things doing airfield circuits all day, I think was the escape pod that made them look strange.

My memories of driving round that area date from the time you were probably stationed there.  If I'd have known we could have met up for a beer...

I did get to meet one USAF guy stationed there he was dating a lady freind mine of at the time.  He got well into playing Rugby football and used to fancy himself as being really fit.  He challenged me to a road race one time over about a 6 mile circuit I'd got back and was able to make him a coffee before he returned....

I forgot to tell him I'd been a club runner in my teens and I hadn't bent myself too badly out of shape by then ...  Well, he'd already put his money down...

No - that can't be 30 years ago - I don't and won't believe it :)

I did some recording at a studio in Upper Heyford which was really interesting - if the noise of a jet interrupted a take, he would give you that hour for free :)

you need to eat in a pub. Pub grub is where it's at.
As an American, I can vouch for that. Cant beat the outa the way pub grub.  Loved it when I Lived There-GOOD STUFF.

Where did you live Mike?
I was USAF but lived in Mildenhall, Lakenheath, Bentwaters with loads of time all over the place. Pretty much stayed in London but did venture out occasionally to other areas. Hard to remember the other places-that was 30 years ago. LOL

Shame you're not here now, you could pop round for a cup of English tea and a look at a Fanboi's set up.  I live about 10 miles from Lakenheath. Not that I was here 30 years ago, I was doing my own bit for Queen and country then. I sort of ended up here by accident and a strange sequence of postings. Very nice it is too though.

Soul food.

100 percent american and some of the best food you can eat.  (also some of the worst....chiltlins)

There was a place in Houston by the Astrodome that I can't remember the name of.  They had ox tail in gravy with mashed potatoes and green beans that was better than anything I've ever eaten.

I was one of the TWO guys that got all the tankers off the ground when we bombed Lybia. Have some great pics of that stuff still. F-111s and a tanker each fueling up in the air on their way down to pay Momar a visit
No - that can't be 30 years ago - I don't and won't believe it :)

I did some recording at a studio in Upper Heyford which was really interesting - if the noise of a jet interrupted a take, he would give you that hour for free :)

Okay, MMMmmm  Hmmm   If I remember correctly it was Apr of '86 and I believe it was in the late evening cause we were called in from the pub and well on our way to being lit.  Let me check.

LOL I might have used that studio while there as well. Dont remember what town it was in but we recorded 4 songs while there back then.
