I managed a large LAN/WAN Network and Hardware Help Desk for 23 years (until I retired). People don't call the Help Desk to tell them how great things are working or how much they like it, they call because they have a problem and some are mad about it and others just want help. We helped them all equally, the P'd off ones and the ones that were nice. A forum is no different.

Not sure I agree. . . a forum is not the same as a help desk. It would be more accurate to compare it to Cakewalk's technical support, no?

jpetersen Folks are drawn here when things go wrong, so they're already p*****d off and negativity is kinda baked in. Negative posts are also informative. Between the derision and levity, some real gems of insight get posted by those with the knowledge. Most of my right click/saved threads are negative ones.
I agree but there are better ways to express ones self than some do here on the forums. I am drawn here to learn and without reading these forums I would be nowhere as efficient with Sonar as I am now. Most all of the problems I have had with this DAW have not been the software's problem. They were wetware problems, i.e. me.
The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better. I don't see how this forum could be any more positive. Everybody has a bad day, gets frustrated, and takes things the wrong way once in a while. If people accept that fact and quit throwing gas on the fire in an effort to be self-appointed judges, the flames wouldn't get nearly as hot. When somebody is already frustrated there is nothing more explosive than an admonishment from a peer about their attitude. This isn't La-La Land. This group is a mix of people from around the world, with different skill/knowledge levels, personalities, priorities, etc., with music and Sonar being the only consistent, common ground across the board. With that in mind, I think we do pretty darn good. IMO, of course.

A forum is a mirror of society...and it's open to the public. You'll get the good, the bad, the geniuses, the idiots, etc. Most members here have sufficient maturity to know the difference between constructive criticism and ranting. Constructive criticism is one of the factors that propels SONAR forward. I think one of the biggest improvements would be if all posts were fact-based, regardless of their positivity or negativity.

bitman A forum mission statement? That's pretty grandiose and pie in the sky even if it is in the TOS.
Most forums have some kind of description, e.g., "For users of legacy Steinberg Cubase software," "All topics on WaveLab 7 and WaveLab Elements 7," "General discussion area, members must have 15 posts before posting here," "Need help from an experienced musician? Post your questions here! Contributors are expected to respond constructively to help both growing and skillful players flourish, and any offensive comments are strictly prohibited," etc. If you want less "grandiose," consider it a "description" instead of a mission statement, but most forums go through the exercise of defining and stating their raison d'etre.

wow, what I thought was going to turn in to a huge cluster muck, has actually appeared to be turning in to a good therapy session over the past several posts. John and Bob, you guys have about the same grip on life and this forum as I do. Craig too: "A forum is a mirror of society" absolutely agree. I do however wish people wouldn't take things so serious. I could be wrong but I believe the OP was referring to people who come here with one mission and one mission only, to smear cakewalks name in the mud. I actually find some of the more interesting threads to be ones with users explaining their problems in a constructive way. This gives me a new look at things I might have never even noticed and apply them to not just my own personal work habits... but share them with others in hopes they solve their own problems. Sharing is caring. that's what this world needs more of. im guilty of being a dink on my levels. if there is one thing I would like to change about myself it would be arrogance. I can be arrogant and blissfully ignorant without even realizing it. This is a good lesson for myself to try and be more patient with others as I would want them to be with me. I don't think this thread is about "can someone tell me why this doesn't work" I think its about " who makes this software chimps" ? we could all learn to be more patient and not take everything so serious and most of all...Smile and laugh. I have found the secret in life to being happy is to laugh. laugh a lot. laugh at yourself, laugh at each other. its healthy. its also the reason I have been married for over 15 years.

Yes exactly. I probably didn't word my original post as well as I could have. It's a nice thing to have such active participation from the Cakewalk staff. Sometimes I read posts and I think "Man if I was in their shoes, I would feel pretty crappy after reading this post." I think constructive criticism or feedback is fantastic and I always enjoy reading it. But some of the posts go on and on with all sorts of wild speculation and sometimes outright smearing of the Cakewalk team. . . those are the ones I would like to see less of. I think I was mainly responding to the recent threads I've been reading that were about "The lifetime upgrades are a sham and they're trying to screw us" or "Cakewalk's customer service sucks and they obviously are doing nothing about it and therefore are screwing us" or "Such and such a feature or bug is not addressed like I've requested, therefore Cakewalk is a horrible company". The thing about those threads is not only are they not constructive, but people don't want to seem to let the issue go even after getting a response from Cakewalk staff. Anyway, glad to have some conversation about this topic, and I look forward to a long future with Cakewalk and the user forums :)

Hi All! I agree with the general idea that common courtesy goes a long way. It (this forum) is a microcosm of the world. There is so much good will here that that "other" chatter is not an issue to me. After all, if I'm talking to someone and a child comes up and starts interrupting the conversation, I just calmly admonish the little one, or having failed to remedy the situation in that way, just ignore the little monster! I'm all for smiling and helping. Ray

I will join these last posts to say that I have a wife that sees when I need to make music I become a little enclosed when it has been too long. She then says, "you should go to your studio, you seem to need it" But, yeah. A little courtesy goes a long way when it comes to getting help in here. All the best.

Uhoh, lets not get too politically correct here, people do need to express themselves sometimes, and if something is bugging them big time, its better get them to put it out there so at least others have a chance to fix things. Myself, I would rather know the good and the bad about a product, so I can make informed decisions about when to use it and when to use something else, and would suggest that devs need to konw this also, so they can improve things. I do not believe that only saying nice things for the sake of saying nice things is a good thing, however any personal attacks on a person most certainly should not be tolerated. Getting frustrated when you are you are trying to do something and it just wont work for you is a normal human behaviour, and if expressing that leads to a negative post, that then leads to a solution, or draws attention to a problem that needs to be fixed, well, that is what a forum is for is it not, a place to discuss and resolve things? I could be wrong, but I dont think the intent of a forum is to produce a fanclub, ie, there is no team cakewalk mearchandise store or coffee mug and lanyard promotional giveaways :)

I also think what the OP is referring to also involves thread titles like "Linked MIDI Clip Bug!!" where the issue is not a bug, and the post starts off with "Found a seriously annoying bug." A lot of people instead phrase topics like this as a question, e.g., "Linked MIDI Clip Bug?" which makes more sense. With the original thread title, someone might just assume there's a linked MIDI clip bug and never find out otherwise. But with a question, someone will be more inclined to open the thread to see if there's an answer, and in the process, learn something about how SONAR defines the length of MIDI clips, and how that relates to the different ways in which you can link clips. Or if it really is a bug, then people will be more inclined to confirm it in order to answer the question.

Forum hosts, mods, are very top notch. They try to keep a fire from spreading and are very professional. I admire their stamina. If you ever want to see how bad forums can be just go to the Steam Community. My ignore list is pretty long. If you think people are passionate about DAW software check out Steam. It's the cesspool of civility.

I think this forum is very civil. It may not be peaches and cream but it is very civil. People have a right to speak their minds as long as it is not an attack on another member.
