However, I took the survey and was pleasantly surprised that there was a place for comments.

That was far more valuable than the rest of the survey imho.

I agree, that was a nice addition.

Jlien- if you want a better comparison you should get Sonar Producer or otherwise get a scaled down version of Studio One.  ProChannel is a very big piece of Sonar now.

How did you answer the first question in the survey?

Well, I prefer not to tell what score I gave to Producer/Studio-only features (there weren't a lot IIRC) because I already apologized for taking part in the survey. If that was not enough, let me put a Japanese apology emotion here.....m(_ _)m......he's down on his knees with his head to the floor.

Although Studio One 2 Producer, which I use (because the Artist version doesn't support VST), is not PreSonus's entry-level daw and costs $199 retail price compared to X2 Essential's $149, I seem to like X2 Essential more because S1 lacks many basic features (which might all be added in V3, though). I think X2 Essential is an excellent product, and it's really underestimated. Essential is not an entry-level daw, it's just an entry-level version of Sonar. However, it does have issues/inconveniences and I wanted CW to make improvements. Take Lanes, timestretch, ACT, and Control Bar/Console sizes are probably my top requests for improvement, and they are not Producer/Studio-only features. It would also be nice if half-baked features like color options and simple instrument tracks are improved as well.

Below is why I have not been thinking of upgrading to higher versions (incl. S1 Professional), so if you're busy there's no need to read :)

Look at the X2 version comparison chart:
http://www.cakewalk.com/products/SONAR/SONAR-X2-comp-chart.pdf

Although the number of effects sends is a little too limited, most features are available in Essential, and the retail price is $149. Isn't that cheap? I remember paying only $35 to upgrade from X1 to X2 (because I upgraded during the year-end sale). I know, many effects and instruments are missing but to me a DAW is a platform and effects/instruments are add-ons, which are available from many third-party plugin developers. And because I prefer to spend my limited free time on writing songs and practicing instruments than tweaking many different compressors, reverbs, etc., it's more logical for me to not upgrade at this point. I have many good VSTs like Kontakt, Nexus, Korg Legacy Collection, Studio/Abbey Road Drummer, EZDrummer, White Grand, Cherry Electric Bass, Shreddage Bass, Guitar Rig, Mix Control Pro, EAReverb, Valhalla Room, SpringBox, Melda Free Bundle etc. etc. (and even Dim Pro and Rapture), and I prefer not to have to learn how to use two different plugins of the same/similar feature (like V-Vocal in Sonar and Melodyne in S1). When I manage to find more free time or when a VST version of ProChannel (which can be used in other daws, too) and Dim Pro V2 replace the current ones in Producer, I think I'll upgrade without hesitation.

Anyway, I hope all Sonar users will be happy with X3 when it comes out.

Thank you for your kind words, Steve. I think users have the right to complain about bugs because they paid for the features that are suppose to work. But for features that are not included in the product, I think users should simply submit feature requests and wait, instead of ranting, or start looking for a new product.

It's really nice bakers chimed in these survey threads and explained how much they care about their customers. Until recently X3 didn't look as promising as the version 3 of the other "S" daw (I don't remember finding you there, do you use a different username? Maybe I just didn't notice you?).
Now, with the new, shiny forum and the well thought out survey, Sonar's future looks brighter.

Arigato!

You're welcome!    This is what I was referring to...   Complain about the things that are not working as they should and leave the rest for the proper channels.  Incessant whining typically has little real effect.

My user name over there has a "7" on the end, but I read way more often than I post.  As much as S1 is a very solid DAW, it's not as though it hasn't had it's fair share of complaints about bugs and crashes too.  The current 2.5 is an example, where some users aren't seeing the same stability as previous versions.   Sound familiar?

I see, thanks. I tend to skip threads on stability issues because S1 is quite stable on my system and I don't know how to help (Sonar's stable, too, but it feels a little heavier and not as smooth as S1).
Anyway, I hope all users of all daws will have less and less trouble and will enjoy making music.

Got it the other day and filled it all out.

It was a good thing to see Cake - and not a moment too soon!

Hopefully it's no too late though, as it seems some have already bailed.

I still see the same old faces here.
when one bail's, 3 others become new users.
ive seen more new users on the forum for sonar x2 than I did with sonar x1's release.

So would I.

I suspect it is a very small percentage. I'd been using Sonar for several years (at least 5) before I even visited never mind actually started posting and now it's like a drug. One thing is for sure, it's a great knowledge base and the "ace up the sleeve" for Cakewalk - or is that two things?

My guess would be a relatively small, vocal minority consistently visit and comment.

To be honest there are days when I see some members posting many many (dozens) times and I think: "Where do they find the time for this?" Mind you I'm not criticizing them I just wonder. One thing for sure for me: I think this forum is one of the blessings of using Sonar. I know that I considered it when I was thinking of finalizing my primary DAW decision 5 or 6 years ago. And I seem to recall that in the poll there was a question regarding this Forum and it's value.

It would also be interesting to know what percentage of all Cakewalk users actually received the email.  I have never received an email from Cakewalk though I have subscribed, etc, multiple times.  Now that they've fixed the forums maybe they can fix their email system.

I also wouldn't mind having a rough idea of the size of Cakewalk's user base, like how many copies of Sonar were sold last year.

Yes and yes from me. Do you think the recent negative threads on the forum where the catalyst for the survey? Or are surveys like this common from Cakewalk?

With such an open and vocal group of commenters right here on the forum, one might think that Cakewalk would have no need for formal user surveys. Since groups like this represent only a tiny fraction of a program's users, though, CW is smart to seek input directly from their database.

The information gained from their survey is more reliable than comments from the forum, because the forum can be tainted by those who don't use or haven't purchased Sonar X2, while Cakewalk's survey seeks feedback from only registered users. Most forum regulars have seen people come on here and criticize Sonar, when they had never even tried the demo! By surveying registered users, Cakewalk is assured of gaining input from a dedicated group of people who only want to see our DAW of choice get better and better.

In my memory, Cakewalk conducts a mass survey at least once a year. In March of 2012, they did one that was focused on the ProChannel.

I believe this was the third survey I have taken.
