Here's a little thank-you to everyone for a) being cool and b) being supportive. It's NOT the EB-5 bass instrument (not yet - still have some tweaks to make), but it came out of those experiments and it's the harpsichord-like sound I referenced in post #55. Please feel free to download, and I hope you enjoy it. Please post if you have any issues installing the instrument. The download link (good for 7 days): https://www.hightail.com/...elNLb3BITkF6RStHR3NUQw "EB-5 HARPSICHORD" INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIMENSION PRO These instructions are also included in the folder you'll download. It seems the most logical place for the sound is in the folder 01 - Grand Piano folder, as there is no Harpsichord folder. First, unzip the "DimPro EB-5 Harpsichord" folder you downloaded. Then, drag the folder: EB-5_Harpsichord ..and the SFZ file: EB-5 Harpsichord.sfz ...into the 01 - Grand Piano folder that's located wherever you have your Dimension Pro multisamples. The default location is: C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Multisamples\01 - Grand Piano Place EB-5 Harpsichord.prog in: C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs\11 - Pianos When you open Dimension Pro's browser to locate the new patch, remember to press F5 with the Dim Pro browser open to refresh the browser and "see" the new patch!! The refresh may take a while; be patient. Note that the mod wheel adds an octave higher "register" when you rotate it forward. Have fun!

Thanks for taste. I prefer not to place non-vendor files into vendor locations so I deviated from the installation instructions. It makes it easier for me to see what I have added to the default DimPro installation. After creating the new EB-5 folders (in anticipation of the rest of the library) in multisamples and programs, it did require updating the EB-5 Harpsichord.prog by re-adding the 4 copies of the EB-5 Harpsichord.sfz into the elements. The relocated files work fine, thanks again.

Update: I've done all the sampling for three bass instruments. One is full on one-sample-for-each string, the others have fewer samples but use DSP-based transposing to create the missing notes. Two of the instruments use the Tuned Coil Tape feature in the new EB basses, the other is just the neck pickup by itself. Cakewalk has set me up with a way to do transfers for large files. I'll be working on the Dim Pro programs tonight, but don't know if I'll get them all done before NAMM hits...in any event, there's almost ready, so hang in just a bit longer. Meanwhile, I hope you're enjoying the "Harpsichord" patch (remember, the link will expire in a few days so grab it while you can).

I should have known...can't leave well enough alone. I came up with the bass, then thought it would be cool to have one where the mod wheel could add a paralleled wah. And then I did a pseudo-8-string patch, then one where bringing in the mod wheel brings up the level and detuning of a second layer to add a chorusing effect. I'm in the middle of one where the mod wheel adds a filtered suboctave, but it's time to head off to NAMM for a few days...so this thread is going to go dark until next week. See you then!

Thanks Craig - I like the harpsichord! Can't wait to hear your bass instrument. I did follow Scook's advice and went with a new folder - "Anderton" for the harpsichord and in anticipation of your bass. Have a great time at NAMM! Thanks SCOOK for the tip!

Thanks for all your contributions, Craig. I have a general question about sampling for soft synths if anyone wants to answer: Pianos and organs only make one sound per key, or string. Violins and guitars can make the same note on several different strings, with nuances unique to that string. Is there a way to set this up on a soft synth or .sfz based instrument? Thanks, Steve

Some samplers can do "round robin" note assignments, where different notes are assigned without being based on something like velocity switching. I believe this was done originally to avoid the "machine gun" effect with drum rolls, but also to add variety as different notes could be sampled with subtle differences and assigned in several ways, including randomly or in a particular order. What you describe is doable, but the logic of which note to choose could be an issue. When playing a chord at a specific position, then choosing the appropriate notes from the appropriate strings is easy. IIRC the Electri6ity virtual guitar instrument from Big Fish does this by mapping keyboard notes to "guitaristic" voicings. But with a single note line, unless the instrument can "look ahead" to what notes will be played next, and remember where the notes came from, and make an educated guess as to how the line will be played, it would be hard to create a "guaranteed" authentic part. There are other ways to add subtle nuances, although they're artificial (e.g., modulating sample start point or filtering slightly).

Okay...the instrument gets released on Friday, download instructions will be in the newsletter that goes out on 1/31. Also, next month's theme is Education, and I've committed to doing the blog on how to sample with Sonar. Finally, there are five different programs - one standard bass sound, and four more with additional "effects" variations. And yes, I did include string slides Thanks for the suggestion! And did I mention it's free?

Hi Soens, The NI Scarbee Basses do just what you are saying (if I understand you correctly). They have a drop-down menu that selects "Player Style" that will tend to place the notes on the neck according the genre you select. I'm not how you would do this in DimPro. You would of course need samples for each, but that's the easy part.

Anderton Not quite sure what to do about the harmonics. I'll probably just transpose them to cover an octave instead of getting too fancy. How often to people play bass harmonics?
Chris Squire - The Fish on Yes' Fragile comes to mind, but other than that... not so much
