It's just struck me that among all the other lunatic stuff, Ben keeps talking about digital audio as if it's a new thing that people are still working out how to use, rather than a very well-established, thoroughly understood de facto standard for nearly all modern sound recording.

After a quick google to check some dates, here are some pertinent points:

PCM, which is the core tech of digital recording was invented in 1937.
First commercial digital recordings released in 1971
First all-digital LP in the popular music idiom was made by Ry Cooder in 1979

For my part, I was recording to ADAT in about 1996, and that was hardly new even then.

ya the jokes on us when ya find out the most  plugins are all the same, and where just paying for a new face to look at.
its not like they let ya open it up and look at the single page a code it took 3 months  for the to write and when its done.
allreality typed and finished in a few hours.
and we just tell our self. its looks like a fairchild, sounds (alittle) like a fairchild
 its worth 100 bucks.
the best part of analog is that, you could be in the woods for years with a power supply, and never have to worry about.
dam  , without internet  your Prochannel waves suites leave you with  some nice code on a hard drive>>
you have the amp's that wakes up the birds making the sound wave,s,not Guitar rig  whatever.
 threw your studio speakers.
iv yet to hear a plug sound like my stack live

The ProChannel doesn't require an internet connection.

I've run SONAR without the internet.

May others have too.

im very sorry papu, yes we can run it.
but one little issue, or bad sector, and its game over, you can aleast break a analog device more , or fix it on the fly.
but i wonder if someday everything will be wireless and we run sonar on our headsets.

It's not really a pressing concern this, though, is it? Is anybody planning on making a record in the woods any time soon?

I can - it's called dictating to the spouse - she does the typing while I'm making sweet music.

I jest, maybe.....

Sickvision, wth  are you talking about? Most people recommend to disable the internet when using Sonar or any DAW. I keep internet on because I know how to build and set up computers, and the internet does not effect my use of Sonar or any other program, and I know how to not get stupid viruses, havent had a virus in years.

Are you just talking rubbish to joke or something like the rest of us? If so, ok then lol, but if not, oh brother... I recommend you reevaluate that assessment of needing internet to run PC or Sonar, or any DAW.

I've only skimmed over this thread and the other one that got locked regarding digital input levels. I wanted to chime in and explain how I do it so some can get a better understanding of what's really going on. I believe this to be correct. If not, I'm sure one of my pals here will correct me, which I would very much like if I am going about it wrong.

I use two analog pre-amps in series. I get them sounding the way I like, then I pull up the console view for my Fast Track Ultra. I leave the sliders set to 0db and adjust the output on the last analog pre-amp in my chain to achieve a -18db input level on my Fast Track Ultra. In a nutshell, I use the meters on my FTU (my actual DA converter meters) to set my input levels, all I do in Sonar is hit record. The dry signal is all you're concerned about. If I want VST effects, I turn input echo on, but Sonar is really the last thing I worry about in my recording chain.

Sonar as far as I can tell has no effect on the recording aspect other than to save the data coming out of your sound card to a wav file. After that you can adjust the gain side going to the input of your FX Bin, but as far as I can tell, Volume and Gain in Sonar have no bearing when you are recording.

Me and the John's aren't exactly friends, but I don't consider them enemies either. Let's just say, all three of us are equally bull headed in our beliefs.
