Beepster If X2 NEEDS to run on Win 8 then I will most certainly not be buying X2. Just tossing that out there. You won't have to worry about that.

I have always been a strong advocate for windows OSes (yes, even Vista). But, when it comes to Windows 8... I have to say, I hate it. I agree with people who believe that the touch paradigm should stay away from a desktop. I will NEVER use a touchscreen with my desktop machine. I don't see myself straining my arm to be able to touch my screen. I have an iPad and I love that. That does exactly what it is supposed to do, and the handy size allows me to lay it flat, or closer to me to use the touch interface. I don't like the fact that Microsoft shoves this metro interface (which is totally written for touch) down my throat without the possibility to NOT use it. You can disable it, but then you loose out on other stuff that might be handy. And you cannot completely disable it anyway... It's possible to put Windows 7 in XP mode (the theme - not the virtual machine) I don't do that, but it is possible. The change from XP to 7 isn't that big as the change from 7 to 8. I see that mountain Lion (on Mac) is basically doing the same now. Again, they seem to think that is a good idea to bring iPad functionality to the Mac... Why? If Windows 8 remains as it is now, I will most likely not install it. I tried the beta's and I didn't like them. I even tried the server beta as they sometimes allow a more "legacy" approach, but even that wasn't on my machine for more than an hour.

Again, they seem to think that is a good idea to bring iPad functionality to the Mac... Why? The iPad is in a league of its own, really. I totally understand adding iPad touch functions to the Mac. It makes sense and will probably be great. Apple knows what it's doing. Windows 8, on the other hand...I can see where they're trying to go, but it's just not happening. It seems like Windows 7 finally got it right, just as technology is on the verge of changing again. And as usual, Microsoft is a few steps behind. Maybe in a few versions they'll manage to hammer out something likable. But in the meantime, Apple will still lead the way. I wish Microsoft would stop trying to be Apple and just do what it's always done best: Versatile, nuts and bolts operating systems that put the power in the hands of the user. Apple has always been top dog in user-friendly, stable systems. But Microsoft gives us the ability to tinker, change, and customize our systems to meet our individual needs. It's more prone to problems, but it's far more versatile for those who don't mind getting their hands dirty. I think in a few years most monitors will be touch-screen, although I do not believe they will replace the mouse. Instead, they should compliment the keyboard/mouse with additional flexibility and control. If the computer companies design their systems thinking touch-screen will be the primary method of navigation, I think they'll be making a huge mistake. People don't want to have to reach out and touch their monitors to accomplish things. It's a great option, but I don't see it as a practical, efficient or even comfortable style of interfacing with desktop computing.

More than half of the people in my organisation (and they number in the thousands) struggle to do anything more than the most basic of things using XP. We are all upgrading to Win 7 later this year and I can foresee a HUGE learning curve for masses of people (which will also impact greatly on mine and several other "power users" time) For them to have to adopt a touch screen approach would be like trying to teach calculus to a pet monkey - it just won't happen.

HeatherHaze The iPad is in a league of its own, really. I totally understand adding iPad touch functions to the Mac. It makes sense and will probably be great. Apple knows what it's doing. Apple is not doing what you seem to be suggesting that they're doing... OSX Mountain Lion is the same fundamental desktop UI as prior versions... all they're doing is adding add-on apps and functions that make it more iPad-ish from a functionality perspective -- notification center, gaem center, messaging, etc. But those add-ons and apps are no more part of the OS as Safari and iTunes are. http://www.apple.com/macosx/mountain-lion/features.html ... like what MS did with IE so many years ago... they tried to turn the desktop into an HTML application, but that didn't really catch on (hint hint, MS). In effect IE (or it's core components) is actually an integral part of Windows, but not a critical of the OS UI experience... indeed, IE even as a function is optional. BTW, click on that link above, you'll notice the file menu is still in the top left. Imagine that, somebody knows when not to think outside the box! Let's hear it for staying inside the box. RE: Apple knows what it's doing... If Xcode 4 is any indication of the direction and level of quality control of the software side of Apple, Mac users are in for a few tumultuous years. Xcode 4 royally sucks!!! In general, Apple knows what they're doing, but they are faaaaarrrrrrr from perfect.

Very well said Heather. Windows is more fun when you're able to tinker with it. Windows 8 is going the way of Windows ME for the new decade like Bitflipper pointed out. A lot of Windows users don't even have touchscreen monitors and it won't be until another 6-8 years until touchscreens become the norm, replacing non touchscreen monitors. Windows 8 is ahead of its time in that regard. Widows 7 should be improved upon without needing a complete makeover. I think it's safe to say that a lot of users will stick with Windows 7 until Windows 9 is out. Microsoft is smart though, they're releasing a version whether relevant or not to users to cash in with the new version and then will release Windows 9 similar to Windows 7 release right after Vista to please those users. As far as X2 being touchscreen capable... a few users probably own a touchscreen monitor so it will be a nice feature for those users. But some people just prefer to use their mouse/keyboard, touchpad or tablet. So a Sonar touchscreen feature will not be a big selling feature for the next version or whichever version incorporates it. As much as the marketing may hype this feature, you will still need Windows 8 and a touchscreen monitor. If X1 is to Windows 7, then X1 should continue to roll out fixes and enhancements but not overhauled like Microsoft's Windows 8. So lets all hope X2 isn't coming out this year, right Beepster?

@soundtweaker... Yeah that was kind of a silly post for me to make. Not sure where my head was at with that one seeing as how we have dudes here running X1 on XP systems. I doubt the Cakesters would limit us like that unless maybe they were shooting for an all touch screen interface but that would just be a completely separate product. They could call it X1 Touch or something. @skylightron... well I'm a little less worried about X2 coming out than I was before. Now that I see that most people aren't really experiencing the same amount of crashes and bugs with the D patch as they were with earlier versions things will probably be okay. Also I've been fiddling around with my test project and haven't had any problems as of yet (after I optimized my system). I guess I would like to see at least one more patch released just to shake out the last little bits of weirdness (if they are any at all at this point) before moving on but as long as I can still get tech support for X1 I'm okay with X2 coming out. I've never been an early adopter of ANYTHING anyway. I like to wait until something has been around for a couple of years to make sure it's stable and I'm not paying the first release premiums. It saved me from getting sucked into the Vista madness. That would have REALLY upset me.

I realize that but without one it does not look fun at all. The whole shuffling everything around that MS does with new releases always annoyed me as well and it looks like they've really gone out of their way to hide stuff this time. I think Win7 is great and I'd like to use it as long as possible. Just my opinion.

Windows 8 is predicted to be Vista II. I just hope they keep the option for support for W7 when 8 is properly released, like MS did with XP,when Vista was released[and many found XP superior at the time]. Personally, with the money invested in W7 and X1 Expanded,I DO NOT want X2,and hope to use W7 for the forseeable future. Everything is [finally] running very smoothly, and don't want to go through a couple of new products[and their expense $$$]after only semi recently, dealing with the"too early" shortcomings of X1,and working out how to optimise an OS,not particularly implemented, just for Pro Audio. This whole computer "Iv'e just bought it and in 3 months it's already out of date",mentality,is quite shocking to an old guitar player, who after 25years,got my hands on a Real Gibson Left Handed Les Paul, and was surprised that my old hacked up "Ibanez with a Seymour Duncan Humbucker and 25 year old[One of the First in OZ]Floyd Rose-fine tuner Locking Trem".,is actually a VERY good guitar, and the Gibson while beautifully made, with a very pure tone,is actually not the wonder machine,I thought -all these years, when I could never find a Left Handed one for less than 3 thousand plus. Just MO,regards Bob.

Many folks had and have perfectly good Vista implementations. Personally I by passed it and went XP -> 7. But that was just my upgrade cycle. I've been evaluating moving my company's development effort to Win 8. It would be a big move and personally I have a hard time figuring out why I would other than at some point the software my team develops would be outdated and unsupportable. It is a devils bargain in my view. But that is work and for my home studio based DAW I really can't see making the move to Win 8. X2...that will probably happen right off the bat but it will probably be installed on a secondary unit until I think it is ready for prime time. Regards,

Hey Beep,I hear ya,my desktop picture is a L/H EVH[not the Ernie B.,do you think those are better?],and Sweetwater, have some L/H ones for $1499,instead of $3995. I think some of the trouble with the gen.Les Paul,is I exclusively tune 1 semi-tone flat-Eb,and even with 11/52 it just doesn't play in-tune,like my Epiphone Chinese LP Custom,so I restrung it with 9/46 in A440,and it plays much nicer, but my FrankenIbanez, plays great no matter what tuning or guaging, must be something about the shorter scale length-24 3/4" instead of 25 1/2"? Anyway, about Win8,I got a tip, that the co-orporate sector are going to avoid it at all costs[mainly cause their only just changing over to 7 though],and X2?,I wonder?.....silly me,since this is[computers/Daw's] is all only 1 year in,I forgot that the up-grade cost won't be like buying from scratch. I still have a perfectly good VISTA SP2 x64 Ultimate partition on my multi boot Studio PC and in all honesty it runs better DPC latency than either XP3 x86 or WIN 7 Home Prem x64. I'm all on Win7 x64 now for the sake of uniformity across Desktop, Studio and Laptop computers but I se WIn 7 pretty much as VISTA SP2 in functionality. most of the VISTA horror stories were per SP2. Same as if you asked me about SONAR X1 before X1C it just didn't work. Now with X1D I have a stable DAW (not a stable door)

Hey John,my brother had no problem with Vista at all, though he was not doing Audio, mainly buisness, and script writing[TV],and W7 is very similar anyway,so I believe? My sister is all about iPhones, and iPads, but I only use a mobile phone to phone for help, if the car breaks down[almost]. There was a guy over at GS,that's reported that W8,displays higher latency[quite a bit],but that could because the application is coded for 7 no? Anyway, lately Im all about trying to find another Tannoy "Devon",as I've only just found out how expensive they go for as a pair, and I've had "1" only[unfortunately]and after, getting fatigued[very] with my KRK Rokits,I now realise why the old Tannoy sounded so superior, when I was told never use old stereo speaker's for "montoring",as they enhance the sound, and bought the KRK's,and have never been happy with them. Apparently the Devon's were considered a studio monitor, and I never knew,I was given a set years ago,but one was blown, but Ive always thought "it" sounded special. Regards Bob

Apparently the Devon's were considered a studio monitor, and I never knew,I was given a set years ago,but one was blown, but Ive always thought "it" sounded special. I have liked the Tannoy speakers for a while now. A fellow had a pair and they sound a lot larger than they were and very smooth. I sort of thought they were for studio monitoring but they are not near fields. However the best ones are the coaxial ones that cost a fortune now. In my view they are best sounding small speakers around bar none. It doesn't matter which Tonnoy's one gets they are superb. Don't forget studio monitors were around a lot longer than near fields. In the past many audiophiles would use studio monitors of very high quality for general listening. Tannoy was a monitor very much sought after. One reason was they were flat and very honest. Also more expensive. As to Vista I wrote a lot on it on the old Sonar forum. It has and does work very well indeed for me. I have the 64 bit Ultimate version and I do love it. I can say its the first OS I have loved. I have no reason to go to Windows 7 and judging by the Win 8 preview I tried I wont move to it either. That could change if MS fixes it to be a real desktop OS. At present it isn't. Now did I try the Win 7 preview when it came out and came away unimpressed by it.
