Lenses what do you think about them?

I'm looking at the new help for Sonar 2016.11 and one of the new features are lenses. Apparently the name is changed from Workspaces to Lenses. Because I have Sonar Home Studio I am looking at the ones in it. Sonar Platinum may have them by the end of this month.

At present I don't see a huge difference from Screensets except Lenses are global. They can be applied to all projects. Home studio has a limited set that can not be edited where Sonar Platinum and Professional are user editable. More can be created other the stock ones included.  Sort of have it your way.  I don't know if there is a limit on how many can be created. Also a lens Manager is included with Platinum and Pro.

I know its early but just wondering what the forum thinks.

I am looking forward to playing with lenses. I have some excellent screensets that are based on a set the FAST BIKER BOY created for various functions. These need updating so I am waiting to see what new options "lenses" give me before I start refining my workflow

That alone would be pretty huge for my workflow as at present I have to save each project with a particular screenset active in order from it to open correctly in the playlist, depending on how many screens I am using for live performance. If I could apply a 'lense' globally would be awesome!

I do know this they are cool and it was a wish list of mine to have global screensets. I do think these will be just as good. Remember layouts? Lenses are like them.

I would love the ability to move things and resize things inside the Multi-dock. And add to the multi-dock whatever.  Putting PRV and TV next to each other would be great

John ,
The Lenses , are they along the lines of how Samplitude handles personal work-spaces ? or are The Lenses it's own type of SONAR thing for creating personal work spaces ?

I have to make my own before they will be useful, but I think I'll like them in the end.

StudioCat > I use Windows 10 and Sonar Platinum. I have a touch screen.
I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

That was my reaction upon first playing with them. I'd add one more thing - Lenses make it easier to get the most out of screensets. I'm still in the learning process.

I use SONAR as a development system for creating things like expansion packs and loop libraries. I expect Lenses+Screensets will be very helpful in that regard...I spend a lot of time flipping back and forth between functionality and views.

can someone explain how lenses differ from screensets - are they global screensets or is there more to it than that?

thanks rob, reading that it looks like it's a global settings/config thing, including a selected screenset and other settings (like a custom "view" of a project that can be applied)

To me they appear to be about reducing clutter. One can show only what is needed for a particular task. Reducing the modules in the Control bar for example. They are not so much about having various views at ones disposal. Though screensets work along side lenses. Possibly the single most important thing about lenses is they are global. Screensets are on a per project level. I may be wrong but workspaces and lenses are one and the same thing.

Correct. They changed the name because other programs use the term "workspaces" for functionality that's less capable.

I'm thinking you would like the ability to remove it completely as one can with most other views. I would like that ability too. However Lenses may help mitigate the program somewhat. Before you condemn Lenses out of hand try working with them and who knows you may learn to love them. I like them because they are global unlike Screensets. Heck they don't even take any extra space. Their in the menu bar just below the title bar toward the right side.

Sorry I misunderstood. Platinum comes with the following lenses. None, Advanced, Basic, Make Beats, Mix, and Record, Plus you get to save them and make a new one via the lens manager. Its very intuitive to make one.

Think harder, I don't make stuff up. For starters, there's Cubase, Pro Tools, Samplitude, anything by Adobe, etc.

Search on a program name + "workspace." Search functions on the interwebz are a beautiful thing for those who need to augment their ability to think.

just tried lenses for a bit and they seem a bit confusing when used in conjunction with screensets (e.g. screen set "matrix" and lense with matrix disabled ...)

I reckon they just subtract from whatever should be displayed on a global level. Still need to think of a proper use for it ... apart from a tiny laptop screen there it is obvious ... but on the big studio screens, hmmm, eveything fits, everything has got its place ... ideas, suggestions?

It was the "haha" that seemed to provide a context that went beyond being merely inquisitive.

First, I don't create fake news. Second, I'm a gentleman, and I didn't want to spell out by name programs whose workspaces offer less functionality that what SONAR would offer if it chose that name. But since you asked, and since you believe it's my obligation to justify what I say even though I think it's clear I do research, I responded to your "haha" question even though I would have preferred not to.

I just updated to 2016.11. Lenses load markedly slower than screensets for me. Slower than I'd like, anyway. Plus, it seems you can't have them as part of the control bar. That's kinda big for me, as I dock the control bar at bottom of my Raven touchscreen and switch plenty when working. I wonder if it's possible to have lenses become a module in the control bar...

A main difference between Screensets and Lenses is that Lenses allow some control over what displays in the Views menu to remove clutter.  For example, if you never use the Matrix or Big Time views, then you can remove them from the Views menu.

Hope this helps,
