jpetersen 3) "Insert" key > Little dialog to choose Audio or Midi track
My Insert key (which I haven't touched) just inserts a new track without asking anything.
Curious. I looked around for a preference setting that might influence this but found none.
It's based on the last track type you inserted. If you last inserted:
- Audio track = Insert adds audio track
- MIDI track = Insert adds MIDI track
- Instrument track = Insert adds MIDI track
- Track Folder = Inserts audio or MIDI track, depending on last track type inserted prior to inserting track folder
- Blank project (no tracks to provide precedent) = Asks if you want to insert audio or MIDI track
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
Ah, yes, that's right!

This new feature will help new customers and also make life easier for existing customers. Personally, I think it was a good investment. We have a lot more cool stuff coming. Some will appeal to new customers and others to existing users.

I understand what you're saying. I'm just not sure this is going to provide enough value to users to justify Cakewalk's resources and also adding to the visual clutter with another button. But that's just my personal opinion and I am often wrong. I am wondering though in general, how does Cakewalk evaluate what features to tackle next? Is there some process where user feedback is considered and then the features are prioritized according to the most value? Or is it just that the group of devs thinks it will be valuable? I ask because there are some items listed as features to be included in Spring 2016 that don't strike me as something that many users would really ask for.

That makes sense, given that last month was Patch Point/Aux Track enhancements, Melodyne 4, and power user optimizations.

I think a lot of folks are waiting for the ability to change the interface skins and the revamped mastering plugs. Something that I know I really want. There's many threads where people are complaining about work around's and glitches that they've become tired of over the years. That's why I didn't do a back-flip when new cool feature was a menu that does things I can already do. I don't think the bakers and bakettes should feel a need to defend their decisions. They do what they think is best. Not being thrilled by those decisions doesn't make me a Sonar hater. I mean, they must want feedback, because a feedback portal is in the works. It's another feature that won't elicit a back-flip from your truly.

This goes for me, too. After all, I just paid up for another year. I agree we all benefit from new usership but Sonar was never entry-level. I use other DAWs, too, some with a reputation of being easier. None have dedicated Insert buttons, everyone gets Insert menus. A far more powerful attractor is reading in other forums people asking for features "...like in Sonar." Sonar would be irresistible if its undisputed feature-richness could be reinforced by a spreading reputation for a frictionless user experience.

Indeed. For example, I would have much rather the time and effort had been put into (finally) doing something about the appalling graphics that show whether a VST plug-in on or off. I'm sorry, but with my eyesight, I simply cannot tell the difference between such similar shades of grey:

I totally agree. I think little tweaks like this would make an awful lot of Sonar users very happy. In this case it would make it obvious to new users that a plugin is turned on or off, rather than questioning it at first glance and thinking "Oh, it'd be better if it lit up when it's ON". Kind of seems like a no brainer really. I hope UI solutions like this get bumped up the "to do" list, and that the Add Track Menu is just the begining of an improved cleaner look for Sonar. Unify everything to a common theme, pop ups, menus, dialog boxes, fonts, the whole lot. Achieve visual continuity across the entire application. If nothing else it'd sure look pretty!

While it may not be earth shattering, it's still a good new feature. Hey, not every new feature can be drum replacer. Also, I agree about making the on/off status of plugins more visible. As well as making the selected track more visible.

6) Right click > Insert Multiple Tracks 7) Right click > Insert from Track Template (I believe this is the only way you can add multiple MIDI tracks with different MIDI channels already assigned) 8) Shift + Num 0 (If an audio track is currently selected, it creates a new audio track. If MIDI, it create a new MIDI track.)

Cakewalk should come up with some sort of Card [ physical or .pdf] with a listing of basic activities for the newcomers specially with Keyboard Shortcuts and Menu. [A Ready reference] They can be Card A, Card B depending on the Stages or Type. Insert - To insert Track... Delete - to Delete Track... File New - to create new project. Option - Properties - to change setting of Audio, MIDI etc.. I think that can be Helpful. Or Card - Editing Click [icon] - show hide Automation line Click [icon] - Show hide Take lanes and so on. It my opinion. Regards Snehankur

I have to say, I'm surprised by the detractors of this new feature. I've been using Cakewalk since it arrived on a single floppy disk, and I think this looks slick. More of this kind of GUI enhancement will make Sonar more palatable for more people and that's ultimately good for all of us. Good on ya, bakers. Keep up the good work!

Well, we're experiencing "the Gearslutz effect" - people giving opinions on things they've never actually tried . We'll see what people think after it's out. I've been testing it to write an article about this feature for the eZine, and overall I prefer it to the other ways to add tracks (assuming it's not a situation where I can use a Track Template).

The dialog as such is a Good Thing, I think. I can identify with a new user adding a new midi track (ESPECIALLY a new midi track) and wondering - OK, now what. But if we want to use it, we have to remember it's under the new button. And if we don't want it, we have to use another way (Ins-key, say) And if we hit the Ins-key and there's no tracks yet, we see a different dialog. And if we insert a midi VSTi, we see yet another dialog. So for a future version, some sort of unification might be in order. I also feel strongly that, if it allows adding multiple tracks, it may as well also allow the user to decide beforehand where to put them. See the Clone Tracks dialog, keeping in mind it pre-dates Folders and only addresses positioning in terms of track numbers. Edit: But this suggestion is mainly because repositioning multiple tracks in Sonar is - well. At the risk of repeating myself, allowing drag-drop of more than one track at a time would probably be a far better place to do this, esp. since we are thinking of the new user.

You may also just want to create a midi track as part of setting something up. I think "MIDI Only" should be the default 'Instrument'. That way it won't be hidden and removes the odd reference to TTS-1.

Maybe what the user wants is to monitor the input, but for that to happen the track has to echo its input. [could someone please reset the forum clock again so we can fix stupid typing errors, and also for the newest posts to show as unread (how can a digital clock get so out of sync so fast ?)]

Now that's an odd omission. If you're going to have a central place for inserting things, I think you want to be able to get at all the things you might want to insert. Not really; there's already an Insert menu with every possible thing you'd want to insert. The Add Track flyout supplements that with a simpler interface for the most common tasks. If you're going to add the option to insert Track Templates, then you might as well as insert ReWire devices, and then it gets complicated fast. Interesting that this new feature hasn't been released yet and already there are changes needed. Needed changes or suggested changes? II don't think it's possible to evaluate what's actually needed without trying it. This thread is beginning to ressemble a trial balloon. It's not, it's a preview. If past experience is any indication, after a feature is introduced, it can be modified shortly thereafter if there's enough interest...e.g., Upsampling was introduced. If no one liked it, that probably would have been the end of it. But people got into it, so Upsample on Playback was added a couple months later. Same with Mix Recall.

Not necessarily; it could be driving a MIDI-aware signal processor, or someone might want to add several MIDI-only tracks to drive a multi-timbral instrument.

I will use the new feature. I've been adding tracks forever in only one way and had no idea there were 4, or 7, other ways to do it. This new feature looks intuitive. Something else not yet mentioned is, for those who prefer using a mouse, this requires less mouse travel. A little thing, but anytime you have to move up to the menu, find something, and move back, is wasted motion that takes you away from the task at hand.

One final UX item: Light the Record button in the same red as the other record buttons, light the Input Monitor button the same blue as the Input Echo button. Edit: To head off New User misunderstanding, perhaps consider using either Echo or Monitor (just one unified name), for the same thing.
