Meh. Cool I guess but not sure it was the best use of Cakewalks limited resources.

Indeed.

For example, I would have much rather the time and effort had been put into (finally) doing something about the appalling graphics that show whether a VST plug-in on or off.

I'm sorry, but with my eyesight, I simply cannot tell the difference between such similar shades of grey:

Green for ON and Red for off would be great!

Consider it done

No argument there - I'm all about consistency.   If you post a FR for it, I'd vote!

Heck, it's not even out yet...
... well, why not. Yeah, OK. Probably the proper place for this anyway.

I've been testing it to write an article about this feature for the eZine, and overall I prefer it to the other ways to add tracks (assuming it's not a situation where I can use a Track Template).

Now that's an odd omission.  If you're going to have a central place for inserting things, I think you want to be able to get at all the things you might want to insert.

Interesting that this new feature hasn't been released yet and already there are changes needed.  This thread is beginning to ressemble a trial balloon.

There's a good case for moving the existing Insert menu from the main menu at the top down into the Track View menu bar.
Everything on that menu is applicable to Track View - move it down and augment it with whatever.

There are too many items to bring it all into the new flyout in it's current size, but maybe eventually eh!

One final UX item:
Light the Record button in the same red as the other record buttons,
light the Input Monitor button the same blue as the Input Echo button.

Edit: To head off New User misunderstanding, perhaps consider using either Echo or Monitor (just one unified name), for the same thing.

Agree. As Steve said, put up a FR and I will vote for it.
All the best.

ok I read the whole thread.   good grief.    a "feature".

Insert (number of) (type of) tracks (following/before) track number (X).

In ONE and ONLY ONE place and ONLY ONE way, and that a clear way for the beginner and a fast way for the expert.

There are 3 or 4 ways to resize all tracks in the Track view and they are probably more difficult for new users to find than the ways to add tracks. So, why not add up and down arrow buttons to the right of the Add Track's "+" button that do this?
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Keyboard-shortcuts-or-buttons-to-instantaneously-equalize-all-tracks-heights-in-TV-m3206359.aspx#3206359

I'm sure the resize buttons will be very helpful to many, not just new users but also existing users.

Coming in summer 2016?

I'm trying to imagine someone sat looking at the internet, feeling genuine hate, over a minor piece of UI design.

And I find it all too easy to imagine, sadly.

You have just described what Add Track does, except for the "following/before" option. However, I guarantee that if this function was implemented as you describe, the complaints would be quick to arrive, loud, and numerous...

"That sucks!! How come I can't specify the track's output? You want me to insert a track that goes nowhere?"
"Those idiot Cakewalk developers seem to have forgotten that tracks need inputs. C'mon, guys!"
"Wow Bakers, how stupid can you be to let me create 10 tracks AND THEN HAVE TO DRAG THEM INTO A FOLDER?!?"
"I play through amp sims, where do I enable input monitoring?"
"What if I don't use the same MIDI controller all the time?"
"Simple instrument tracks suck!!! Why can't I split the track and put it in a folder LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE DO?!?"
"Look, I get you want to make things simple, but why can't I insert a track that's already record-enabled, monitoring the input, and ready to record? Why does your stupid simple approach make me do MORE clicks AFTER inserting the tracks?"
"This new way of inserting tracks is really, really dumb and is why SONAR is so widely hated, or despised, or neglected...the only improvement is being able to choose following/before, and in the process you're crippled all the rest of the functionality we need a whole lot more. Way to go, Bakers."

I like it.

But what I also like is the look (feel and color) of the "Add track" popup menu. I mean, if the whole Sonar UI would be in that color tone with same fonts and buttons and icons, it would look great and easy to work with. ;)

Was it in Sonar 8.5. when the Start menu was updated and eventually it looked the same as in X1? :)

Best Regards,
Marek

The style is nice, but it's pretty dark and grey.

Does this announce a major overhall of all the dialog boxes ?
Otherwise it would be a bit out of character with the rest of the UI.

SONAR is not widely hated or despised. In fact people who are using the current version overwhelming love it. We have data to back that up. And neglected? Have you seen the amount of updates we have done this past year? I am all for a good debate and people will always have opinions either way, but when you say a program is neglected, and it's clearly not, it makes it hard to take any of the statement seriously.

As far as the Add Track Menu goes. I, personally, think this is a good feature and will be a time saver for all customers. Realize though that any feature we put in will always have scrutiny. If you don't use MIDI, you aren't going to care much about any MIDI enhancements. But people who do MIDI every day will likely be happy. If we were to put in only features that were universally loved by 100% of the customer base, there would be no new features because that is impossible.

I think it's human nature to some extent...  If one is unhappy with a thing, it's not possible for others to be happy with it, right?

I was wondering though which one it is - hated or despised or neglected.   But if neglected has been ruled out I guess that leaves hated or despised.   And a nutshell.

Dear Bakers..
Please continue doing what you are doing, whatever you  are thinking best for the users of different horizons.
Putt all the features. Also please put a Alt-Ctrl-Shift-Right Click to pop up window stating the following:

I want this feature
I Don't want this feature
Hide this feature
Hide this feature permanently
Edit: Keep provision to bring back if hidden permanently

So users can decide on their own and this will certainly fix some of the arguments.

My little thought

Re: Get a sneak preview of new Add Track Menu [Coming Soon] 2016/02/21 09:30:44 (permalink)
I am being to think that the bakers should not announce what is coming in the next version.  Here we have four pages of discussion on something no one has even used yet.  Maybe this is another feature that I will seldom use or maybe I will use it all the time, I don't know as I haven't seen it yet.  Or maybe it will be like the start menu.  When it first came out I didn't work very well here so I didn't use it.  But now that they have fixed it I use it all of the time.

So I will hold my thoughts on this feature until I actually have it in my hands.

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

Normally the eZine is posted as a preview, but they couldn't do it this time because it contains info on an announcement that's embargoed until either Monday or Tuesday (I forget which). So I guess this was a "half a loaf is better than none" situation.

I agree about the Start Screen.

I see you're new to this internet thing

I think the announcement of upcoming features in the Rolling Updates section is fine, because it doesn't provide much information (i.e. it's exciting, because we can use our imagination and expect a lot from the features). But I'm against the sneak preview and the thread announcing its release, because it's not beneficial to us at all. We'll be using the feature in a week or so anyway. We probably only wasted our time.

It gives us the opportunity to point out potential pitfalls before they get baked in.

Not really, based on past experience previews precede the release by a few days to a week or so. By the time it's previewed it's already frozen.
