I'm a huge fan of Sonar. I run my studio - Skullsessions Studios - out of my home. Sonar has been my choice of format for many years now. I'm able to pump out some pretty hefty sounds, and the local artists are really digging what the software is capable of.

More than a year ago, one of my clients, LONESTAR PORNSTAR, got national distribution with BCD Group out of The Woodlands, TX. Things have gone pretty well for them, having moved already more than 2,000 copies of the CD prior to any distribution deal. I have no idea how many copies they've moved to date, but it must be doing well because they've already signed on for distribution of their second album, which we are currently tracking.

And then, just last week, I received word that another one of my clients, SATURATE, is signing with BCD as well for distribution. The band has already moved more than 1,000 copies of their first CD on their own. And, they've re-entered the studio to add a track to the album before distribution begins later this year.

I stay very busy due to the fact that none of these ProTools equipped studios in Houston can touch what I'm doing with Sonar. This all adds up to one pretty cool wave of success that I'm happy to be surfing...and more great things are on the horizon!!

My minimalist - electronica- ambient CD, "Lamplighter", which was written in Project 5 and mixed in Sonar 7 Producer, has been picked up by Lakeshore Records, a division of Lakeshore Entertainment, and was released yesterday (May 13th). It's available at Amazon.com and on iTunes, as well as other places you can buy CDs... just search "AgincourtDB Lamplighter" :-)

Honestly, without Cakewalk and all the help, guidance and support I've gotten on these forums, it never would have happened.

I've been using Cakewalk products for a long time and have had some success with recordings made with the software.

In 2004, I released a CD called, Shades of Dave. The song, These Are The Good Times from this CD was licensed for an independent feature film called Larry's Home Video which premiered in the Fall of 2007.

Last year, I released a 5-song EP called Cats and Cars and Presidents. The song, This Old Car from this EP was played nationally on the the Car Talk show on National Public Radio.

Couldn't have done it without Cake!

So what you're saying is that I could have just sent .cwp files and audio folders and not sat here for a couple days bouncing out audio, then?

P.S. Cakewalk got three namechecks in the liner notes, btw.

The portability of a Sonar project is another reason Sonar's a fantastic tool.

I planned to record guitar at my home mini-studio but something came up and I could not. In a panic, I called Steven Bell of Top of the Hill Music, a short 9 miles away in Duvall. From the forum, I knew Steven was using Sonar. He had a slot open. I was all ready to burn a bun file of my 60 track project and head over, but after talking to Steven, who said simply to put the audio folder and the project file on disk, and we'd be ready to go, I made it to his studio.

Set up was a breeze. By the time the guitarist had his pedal board unpacked, Steven had loaded my project into his workstation and we were talking tracks and levels. The fact that we were both using the same version of Sonar made it increadibly easy to take the project to his studio.

When we were done, it was even easier to bring it home. Steven simply burned the new guitar tracks and the .cwp file on a cd for me. I loaded them in at home and was up and running in minutes.

Thanks to Sonar and Top of the Hill Music!

You know, Mod Bod...that's a hard question to answer well.

I think what I mean is - simpy put - I'm proving to a lot of people aound here that you don't HAVE TO use ProTools to be a serious contender. Most of us on this forum understand that. But some....many people still feel that anything but ProTools is going to be less than professional. There is still a significant stigma attached to Cakewalk/Sonar. Though I see that being less and less the case, I still notice Sonar intentionally being left off of the list when people talk about, review, or suggest "professional" recording platforms.

I would beg to differ. I'm doing it with Sonar, and it is not rare for clients of the very established studios in Houston to come to my place and RAVE about how much better things sound....about how much more comfortable they are at my place.....about how they've never had so much fun in the studio.

Now...I do realize that some of that is my atmosphere, my mics, my room, etc. But the most important part of that TO ME is the fact that we are doing it with Sonar.....and no one seems to care.

To me, that's an ultimate compliment to the Cakewalk crew. After all....all we engineers/producers really want is a program that allows us to focus on the artist's performance without getting in the way. Sonar does that for me and my clients.

Yesterday, after a pro engineer came over and saw I used Sonar, he said the words "I like Sonar".
It threw me back because I ALWAYS have to explain why I don't use Pro Tools, and what Sonar is, and all of its features, etc.

I recently managed to convert a Cubaser to Sonar. He's been a very happy lad after that. And I unintentionally managed to get a Logic man to sell his Mac and Logic software and purchased a pretty mean computer with Sonar and MOTU interface. I asked him why because I didn't understand it (because quite seriously, I think Logic 8 is actually very good!). He said something along the lines of:

    - For one, Logic doesn't have ACT and now, you and I can swap files more easily.

Now THAT'S a first for me!

Cool thread. Sometimes it seems like most people post to a forum because they are having issues or to complain--so good news is a refreshing change.

My good news is a little unconventional. At my day job I am the IT administrator, and our management decided that they wanted to add a video service to our "menu" and our multi-media guy knew nothing about A/V so, I was able to take my years of Sonar experience and apply it to designing and setting up a nice little A/V studio. It was cool to be able to use my skills to help someone else.

Sonar will always be my favorite. I always defend it against PT.

Totally. I wanted to announce my news (and did, over at 'the other place') but since it would have been against the rules (I didn't want to be accused of 'advertising', lol) I didn't do it here on the Cake forums until they put up this thread. :-)

I use Sonar7pe to produce a lot of backing tracks for me (guitar) and our Pastor (synthesizer) to play along with at our church. It has allowed the two of us and a couple of singers to sound as full as a complete band, and throwing together tracks has been a breeze.

...Not to mention our Praise and Worship CD is about done using Sonar exclusively. Great for comping vocal tracks, mixing, etc, etc...

I like "save as" to be able to use common tracks to create a variety of mixes.

Pretty much, the people that come to my home studio (and I"ve been recording for over 30 years) are totally impressed at what one can do with Sonar and the speed which it can be done.

I Recently was asked to "Help" one of my clients who was still learning how to use Sonar 7. He was a little concerned as he hadn't done any serious work and this was his first paying client in the studio and was worried that he had been having some random Errors in Sonar a few days prior to this session. I have also been a little less than pleased with the Stability of Sonar 7 of late so I was expecting a difficult recording Session. We worked Flat out tracking for 9 Hours straight and Sonar 7.03 never so much as skipped a beat and everybody left that evening impressed with the Worklfow and usability of Sonar in a High pressure tracking session with difficult clients.

We are so quick to point out the Shortcomings and problems with Sonar but never praise when Praise is due.

This is a refreshing thread! I use Sonar 7, Dimension Pro, Rapture, Z3ta, and P5 to score a majority of my projects (Sonar is the main DAW but I also use other VSTi's). I recently did two demo songs for the Project 5 website and 2 demo songs for the Moog expansion for Rapture. I've been a very happy user of Cakewalk products since Pro Audio 9. I've done my share of ****ing of course :) But this thread is nice to see. I recently created all of the music and sound effects for two Nintendo DS titles and several animated projects. I've personally never used Pro tools but I don't feel I'm missing anything whatsoever!

    Hey Guys,
Just released a new reggae album "Roots Like A Lion" by the Chicago band called Gizzae. I co-produced this album with one of the band's members. Some recording was done on ADAT and then was all moved to Sonar for mixing/pre-mastering. The music is not your standard reggae and has quite a bit of jazz and R&B flavor. The album sounds incredible both mix-wise and song-wise. The album's not available for free but if you like good music you couldn't go wrong. You can check them out at: http://www.gizzae.com.

    Thanks,

    Best,
    Guitardood

I used Sonar 6PE for all tracking and mixing of MILE LONG POST-IT, my contribution to RPMChallenge08 (to write and record and album in one month). Track templates, bundled fx, flexible bussing, VST's, and V-Vocal were all features that got a workout and contributed to the success of the project.

I recently finished the music and sound effects for SpaceChimps for the Nintendo DS. It's a movie tie-in for an animated feature film coming out this summer. Did it all in Sonar!
