It's sad the the most recent malcontent who has received so much help from Craig hasn't appeared on this thread, he's probably still performing user errors and blaming Sonar for being buggy and using ancient code.
Sad!

Hello Craig ,

I'm wishing you the absolute best of Luck over here in what ever you decide to do next .
When I saw your thread the other night , I wanted to step back and give it a little time to think about the areas you have influenced me during my time being exposed to you and your input here on the Cakewalk Forum ..

For me personally the strongest thing you did here had very little to do with SONAR or The Music Bizz .
I remember reading your words someplace here on the forum where you mentioned  a big part of your motivation is to always contribute and leave a place a lot better than what it was before you found it .
For me that happens to be a personal core ideal I have held for many years .. FWIW , my success rate is rather questionable at times
Your presence here including all the work you did while contributing clearly indicate to me that you words , actions and output are all on the same page when it comes to living and walking that walk .

Long before there was Groove 3 , u tube and "fill in the blank ", you sir were out there in the trenches writing and teaching people how to teach themselves effective workflows and tricks to be used in all phases from personal use to commercial start up project studios ...
That in itself speaks volumes  I do hope that you have a smooth transition in finding new work and opportunities .

When the opportunity presents itself , I still hope to meet you in person someday ...
I just hope I'm not selling Oranges at the freeway entrance ramp  entrance when you pull up in your Hoover car
One never knows ,The way the Music Bizz seems to be going these day's that has become a new concern of mine ...

I'm grateful you did what you did while you were here . I hope you do stick around and help us out when you can .

all the best,

Kenny

Oh Yeah , Life is Good .
The internet is nothing more than a glorified real time cartoon we all star in.
I play a "Gibson " R 8 Les Paul Cherry Sunburst .
The Love of my Life is an American Bulldog Named Duke . I'm currently running Cakewalk By BandLab as my DAW .

Hey Guys,

10.2017 EA is coming out shortly and the major SONAR Home Studio Update just came out. We need the SONAR forum open for SONAR.

Moving this to the Coffee House where everyone can continue to comment.

Best Regards,
Seth

I have most of the eZine done and 30 FX Chains that I think are really cool. I can't take the time to QC them because I was involved in a lot of projects at Gibson, and am trying to make sure anyone succeeding me has what they need to finish what I started.

If you want I can put what I have on craiganderton.com as long as you're aware that a) the eZine isn't finished, and b) while I'm 99.9% sure the FX Chains all work they may not be level-matched etc. Thoughts?

I think you should do what you gotta do fer you Craig and not worry about us.

I'm sure you'll be around in some way shape or form (ie: as a Cake product user/lover) no matter what.

We'll always be here to gobble up nuggets of wisdom whenever you have the time to feed the fish bowl but writing books? Developing products? Taking your expereince and pushing the industry forward however you can from the inside?

Ya... that seems like a better use of time than wrestling with random internet weirdos and trying to perfect/troubleshoot freebie presets you've created just because you wanted to do something nice.

I'd insert another overly attached GF meme here but...

Oh heckittyhellz... let's just go fer it...

Thanks so much for the huge contribution you have  made to this forum. As a much younger man I wrote a blistering email to Steve Case when AOL eliminated the content that you provided on that site.

Ha! Here's the story behind that. My microsite was too successful. When AOL charged by the hour, I was the golden boy - got invited to a big corporate shindig, and received an award for community building. But when they went to a flat rate, the people in Sound, Studio, and Stage were spending too much time there and downloading too much stuff, thus costing AOL money. I was given the choice of either selling music gear online, or leaving...so I left.

As far as Gibson goes, I suspect you are too honest, as evidenced with your often very favorable opinions of competing products on this site,  to be a true company man and being free of corporate bosses is probably best for a true educator such as you.

I have to set the record straight there. There was never any attempt by anyone at Gibson, most definitely including Henry, to muzzle me. I sometimes sent him emails and people would say "oh man, you're going to get fired for that" but Henry would reply with a thank-you note instead. He needed someone who didn't need the job and would speak his mind...I was that person.

As to HC, Henry felt that if it didn't have complete neutrality, it would lose why people went to it. He gave HC 100% editorial control, and that policy remains to this day. I believe that is the main reason HC was able to come back from the dead and thrive again. Ultimately, though, Gibson isn't a charity and has to make money to stay in business. If Harmony Central hadn't been successful, the outcome would probably have been different.

Thanks for the insight there. I always did kinda wonder what happened with AOL. And Steve Case never did write me back....hmmm

Its cool that Gibson gave you  free reign and they should be respected for that. I didn't really think that they did not (let's face it, you might have started this thread a long time ago otherwise!) I only meant that you have worked for decades  to achieve emeritus status in this niche industry and being identified with a specific entity might actually be better for them than it is for you. Again, best of luck and I hope you continue to chime in here!

Somebody gave me this book back in the early 80's which opened my mind to a lot of things. Of course, I had no idea who Craig was at the time......actually, I only learnt about him in the late 90's visiting the Harmony Central forums. I still have this book (in good condition).
Thanks Craig for being an inspiration.

Hi, Craig,

I just wanted to wish you the best of luck in your new ventures, and extend a long overdue personal thank you for sharing all of your amazing knowledge with musicians all over the world for so many years.

Way back in 1978 on the way home from buying my first Dokorder 7140 open reel recorder, I made a special trip to a bookstore at the local mall to pick up "Home Recording for Musicians" (the original with the reel to reel on the cover and the vinyl demo record inside), and then "Electronic Projects for Musicians", and those two books opened the floodgates of learning the recording and mixing process for me, and I'm still learning and trying to improve every day!   I've also enjoyed reading hundreds of your articles in various music magazines over the years and hope to see many more to come.

Sincere thanks and best wishes!
Bob Oister

Re: Hey Guys, It's Been Great But I'm Moving On 2017/10/22 17:57:42 (permalink)
In my opinion, Craig's weekly tips and his involvement in the eZine were an important part of Cakewalk's offer. It was not like a bonus that I could read or not, it was my regular training and education to the art of creating music with SONAR. I consider that Gibson's decision is like a downgrade, especially for us, the non-pro users, who have a lot of things to learn. Will the next step be the removal of SONAR's help?

Craig's articles were the most effective and clear I've ever read. He gave us practical advices and tips that allowed us to obtain functions that the developers hadn't even imagined. And most of all, workarounds to help us create despite the technicals problems that sometimes occur.

I'm not worried for Craig's career, he's such a talented guy. I hope that Gibson still wants to give SONAR the rank it deserves in the DAW industry.

Thank you, Mr Anderton!

You're very welcome, and thanks for the kind words. With the arbitrary removal of my moderator, status I get the hint that I should just move on. So while I can't abandon this community completely - there are just too many cool people - I will be devoting the vast majority of my time to the harmonycentral.com forums. Dendy Jarrett (HC's Director) said I was welcome to do a "Friday's Tip of the Week" over there, and I'll probably take him up on it. He already persuaded me to do my satirical "Craig's List" column as part of the newsletter, so there's a precedent. He also assured me that if the Bakery becomes popular enough that Cakewalk ditches its forums (like many other DAW manufacturers already have), he'd be happy to migrate them to HC.

Thanks again everyone. I'm switching to Reaper. (KIDDING!!! )

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

I can see how you might view this as an offense. But maybe it was merely thoughtless. You should contact whomever at Cakewalk controls such actions, and ask them. I know, you shouldn't have to do this, but do it anyway, for all of us.
