How Many Are Using Custom Themes?

Okay...so we have a theme editor, and several members of the community have posted custom themes (which is quite cool). But I'm curious whether people are actually using custom themes, or sticking with Tungsten/Mercury.

I (mostly) use the stock themes for screen shots and such, but for my own projects, I'm definitely into using my own theme and just wondered how many SONARians are doing likewise. Or if you're using someone else's theme, that counts too as a custom theme.

The main reason I use my own theme isn't so much the looks, but because it highlights the elements that are most important to me in the various projects I do.

The first 3 books in "The Musician's Guide to Home Recording" series are available from Hal Leonard and http://www.reverb.com. Listen to my music on http://www.YouTube.com/thecraiganderton, and visit http://www.craiganderton.com. Thanks!

I don't have the patience to poke around and adjust theme ideas. I want to spend my creative time creating music with Sonar.

So, I'm not a theme maker.

But I really liked Tungsten. Then someone (I'll edit this post later and give the name) posted a really nice theme and I switched to that. It's nice to have folks post their ideas and looks. The one I added is great!

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Sorry guys.  The themes are very cool but not for me.  I use the standards.  I don't want to spend the time tinkering with it.  With SONAR the value for me is what I can produce sonically and honestly I don't care much about the screen colors.  Never have.  I try to spend as much time as I can making the music and I guess I'm too stingy with my time to worry about all the pretty themes.  Again,  I have admired many of the beautiful themes that have been posted (and even have many of them saved) but I just don't mess with them.  Great question Craig!  I'll also be curious to hear the broader response from the forum.  Cheers to all!  Dave

I am using my own modified version which is based on Tungsten.  Could not go back to Mercury (Unless to test something)

What the Theme editor needs, however, is a function that shows a graphic representation of the GUI, you mouse click on a part of that graphic representation, and it locates that element in the object tree.  Not a biggie, but would be handy.

Windows 10 64bit fully patched, 16 gig ram .
PCR-800 Controller.  (Working in Win 10 1809 64bit)
CPU: i5 4670.
Video: Nvidia GTX560ti (latest drivers).
Audio IF: Focusrite 2i2 2nd Gen

Internet always on.

Software
: Cakewalk by Bandlab (2018.09 B29)
ASIO mode. 24bit 48khz 256 samples
Rapture Pro, AAS GS2, VS-3, EP-4, VA-2, Chromophone 2, Z3TA+ 2, Addictive drums 2, Addictive Keys, Mpowersynth (latest), Iris 2, GPO5, Sampletank 3,

I really liked the Tungsten theme when it first came out, used it for a while, and tinkered very minimally with the Theme Editor when it first came out . . . but soon enough found myself back on the Mercury Theme because of it's ability to quickly change track highlight colours in Track View and Console View (Yes, the whole strip) For me, the ability to be able to colour code groups of tracks greatly outweighs anything the Theme Editor or Tungsten has to offer.

Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

I use it and I like it a lot, but I made only a few minor yet very practical changes e.g. colours of those buttons that always give trouble when engaged by mistake or forgotten to disengage at the end of the previous session, which would be punch-in, offset mode, etc.

And I added the official studio logo as a Sonar background, which looks nice :-)

So overall, it took me about 15 minutes to make these changes and apply to main and mobile DAW.

BTW, my changes are based on the Tungsten theme, which is my favourite since the day one it was released. Yet I would appreciate somewhat bigger colour indications for the channels (which was THE MAJOR request ever since Tungsten came out)

Yes, that's why I put in the beginning that using someone else's theme counted to me as using a custom theme. I think it's great that people are willing to share their work.

What I've found in creating my theme is yes it takes patience, and quite a bit of effort to do a complete theme. But I don't really have to do a complete theme anyway, I work on it a little here, a little there. Slowly but surely it's getting nailed down.

Interestingly I don't think it necessarily looks better than the stock themes, because it's designed to provide stark contrasts among the screen elements rather than give them an artistic mien. For me, though, that's useful.

I was excited when i first found out about the theme editor as i have some eyesight problems that i assumed the editor would help me with. I was really annoyed when something essential for people with vision problems was just for the platinum users, i can only afford the artist version.

So i've gone back to Reaper where themes are available to anyone not just the rich.

That be a YES here.

I use the Tungsten theme 80% of the time. My custom Chuckwalk theme the other 20%.
I simply find that you need to have a Masters degree in psychology to use that theme editor. just too complicated for me.

I mostly use customized Tungsten. Tho theme capability was one of the reasons I finally upgraded to splat, I was making and using "themes" since X1, even before Duckbar. Splat disabled Duckbar so I was surprised to see the theme editor arise.

It would be nice to see monthly updates to Theme Editor adding new elements to the list of changeable colors. It has a long way to go to catch up to Duckbar.

My theme editor hasn't worked for several months. Zero response from Cakewalk AND the Forum. Glad, though - I need to be making music! After using some shared themes and one college themed theme I made I have reverted to Mercury for colored channel strips.

I still use my unique Control Bar, and a modified theme, but I haven't used the theme editor since because there were glaring omissions and anomalies I I think should have been addressed in the following months. But as that went dead, I've as mush faith in time being invested in it as any other non core aspect of sonar.

I think there are a lot of cool, custom themes.  I ended up going back/forth between the blue meter theme and the glow green for a while, but ended up back on Mercury.  Turns out that as far as eye strain goes, Mercury is a pretty darn good theme.  Add the strip colors and I'm back to it.

I don't think anyone at Cakewalk really thought of the theme editor as something for people with vision problems although as an application, that makes sense. The motivation for the theme editor was all the people who had requested more color customization options.

When/if I finish my theme it might be what you need. Although not intended specifically for those with vision problems, it is intended to be highly visible from the rear of a room when I'm doing seminars. Meanwhile, if you could specify what would make a theme vision-friendly, maybe one of the graphic geniuses here could whip something up.

Standard Tungsten works well for me, and use it exclusively and just assigning track/bus colors as before, got so much else to learn and experiment with in the audio production I don't seem to have time to for it. Perhaps if there were some more listed in preferences menu I would try them out.

Re: How Many Are Using Custom Themes? 2016/11/17 09:45:33 (permalink)
I'd like to extend a challenge to theme editor fans:

For those of us whose eyesight ain't what it used to be, design a theme that achieves high contrast and text legibility while avoiding garish colors.

That's not an easy design goal, since soft colors and high contrast tend to be mutually-exclusive. (See Microsoft's butt-ugly "high contrast" Windows theme for an example of what happens when you favor legibility over everything else.) But I know I'm not the only sight-challenged geezer around here that would appreciate such a contribution.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
