bitflipper New development. I think I know who robbed me. It was the neighbors. My stuff may be in their house right now but there is nothing I can do. We found their exit path, over the back fence and straight to their house. Had the cops back and showed them the footprints and new gash on the wood fence top. All they can do is look up the address and see if there are known baddies living there. They did not answer the door when I knocked this morning, even though there were lights an TV on inside. It may not be today or tomorrow, but retribution WILL be mine.
You need a Hockey mask....and a machete.... wait for them to come home..... step out in front of them and simply say..... "I want my musical gear back.... we can do this the easy way, or we can do it the hard way. " Of course, you better be really sure they have it and took it....and that they don't have a concealed carry permit..... or you could end up dead or in jail..... Just thought I'd throw that out as another possible option for you to consider. Of course I disavow ever having said anything of the sort should you attempt this and it goes badly. Edit: but if it works.... imagine the stories you could tell....

I would have thought tracks and a scuff mark on the fence would be grounds for a search warrant?

Heh. Years ago I used to keep an insane amount of cash in a lockbox hidden in my apartment. I was so paranoid about someone finding it that I put an angrily scrawled note in there saying "I'M WATCHING YOU RIGHT NOW. I KNOW WHO YOU ARE." In the end I just put the damn stuff in the bank. On a serious note however, maybe you could try putting a sign up saying that you know who did it and that if they would just return the drives intact, no further action will be taken? There is always the small chance that whomever has those drives has fired them up, seen what an insane amount of work there is on them, imagined themselves in the same boat (I know, it's a long shot that they have ever done anything worthwhile with their lives and can relate to losing work) and are currently feeling a little crappy and toying with the idea of getting them back to you somehow? Stranger things have happened. The other alternative, if you are more than 50% sure it was your neighbors, would be to wait for them to go out and then stick an unsigned note through (or on) their door saying that you know they ripped you off and that you would rather not involve the police but that you have video of them doing it and that if they return the gear in full then nothing will come of it. Either they will have no idea what you're talking about and no idea who you are, or they will know exactly what you're talking about and start seriously weighing up their alternatives. In that case, if they have any brains then they'll give you back your stuff.

Been thinking about this and I've revised what I would consider the preferred plan of attack. Find a way to steal back ONLY your backup hard drives then have your insurance buy you all new gear.

There's just no word for how much this sucks, Dave. I'm so sorry for you. A few months ago we received a call from ADT while we were out running errands - we dropped everything and came back home. As it turns out, a cat had triggered the alarm. But from the time it took from Home Depot to the moment we got here and I inspected everything, I was a mess. Of course, material can be replaced (even though you don't just replace certain musical instruments), but all the work cannot. That was just apprehending the worst - I can't imagine seeing it come true.

1. Call off the cops so they think you've given up 2. Set up new surveillance cams and a few critter cams in the yard 3. Buy all new gear (with the insurance money) OR borrow your buddies gear 4. Set up the gear in the yard in full view of the neighbors like you're having a yard sale over the weekend OR make a display of loading & unloading it into your car for several days each time you go out 5. Lay in wait for them to strike again 6. Catch them in the act

Sadly this has been tried before and actually backfired. The crooks did report it and the original owner got jail time. If for nothing else, breaking and entering and trespassing.

Wow, I went through this very thing about 6 years ago. Same ordeal. They took everything, instruments, computer, amps, drums, all of it. I lost all of my projects and everything I was working on. All of those years of work, just gone. Insurance didn't replace everything - we had replacement level coverage, which is the better kind, but there's still depreciation so I was only able to replace about 70% of what I lost. And that does nothing for the sentimental value of my guitar that my wife had bought me 20 years previous. Bit, I hope you handle this better than I did. I fell into a deep depression for a long time and I've never quite returned to form. I don't record nearly as much, and I constantly think about all of the work that disappeared and the energy and time it would take to attempt to recreate it. This is partly why I firmly believe in death as justice for stealing. Maybe not for stealing a doughnut, but sweat and time go into things that we own. We rarely get things for free - we work for them. They are NOT just "stuff", easily replaceable. Bullsh*t. Everything you own cost you time and energy to acquire - lots of it. To steal "stuff" is to steal time out of your life - directly. And that's before we get into the sentimental nature of it all. Death to thieves.

Thanks for commiserating. Yes, now that you mention it, I am showing signs of depression and anxiety. I've slept and eaten very little since then. Several times a night I wake up and go to the window. I obsessively carry my laptop with me everywhere I go, since it's all that's left - had they taken that, too, I wouldn't be here talking about it. I'd be under a bridge wearing a tinfoil hat mumbling curses at passers-by. So thanks for sharing your experience, it's strangely reassuring. Everybody around me has been supportive. The cops, not so much. Too bad they're not musicians.

I'll say this Dave with hopes it'll help... The cops probably can't tell you everything they're doing. I can understand them not wanting to get your hopes up and also keeping what they're doing and what they know quiet until they're ready to make their move. Of course I don't know that for a fact but it makes sense to me. Keep your chin up. You're still alive and a musician...they didn't steal what's most valuable. I too hate thieves. They make me think about doing things that I don't want to think or do. Mike

Get on a first name basis with the detective. If there isn't one assigned call them several times a day until they get the message that they are going to have no peace of mind until they take care of this. There is a story on the Bible about an unjust judge that someone bothered every day for justice and she GOT justice because the judge wanted her to leave him alone. Be the squeaky wheel, squeak loud, squeak all the time. Make them want you to go away and they will take care of it. Maybe you can borrow a high end trail camera from someone, one that takes pictures at night and sends them to your phone in real time. Put it somewhere that covers their house so that if they start loading anything up you can call the police. I wonder if someone who is not you could put a GPS tracker under their bumper. Someone young who can run fast if need be. Don't get in trouble. Some of these ideas probably aren't really good in this day and age and come with some risk, especially since you are dealing with known criminals. Criminals, obviously, don't care about the rules, you do. It is easy for me to talk. We are all angry with you. Don't get yourself in trouble. Do call the detective every day, heck.. twice a day morning and afternoon. Ask for a home number. Bug them. It must be really hard knowing your stuff is right there and you cannot go get it. I hope Spacey is right and the police are working on it but dang.. I have a feeling this is going to work out for you but hanging there in limbo must be really hard. You are in my thoughts and prayers, angry as I am about this. Julien

The past 3 days people have been telling me their own horror stories, and it's shaken my faith in humanity. Others have related much worse tales than mine. I don't want to join the paranoid gun-totin' conspiracy-believing scared and angry crowd, but I can sure see how they got there. But just as I dealt with the death of my wife, and felt like the world was collapsing, I have to keep reminding myself of everything I still have. Family and friends are not so easily stolen.

I wrote NOW for this very type of situation. The only thing that is important is NOW and where you go from here. Good luck!. You have supporters here also

What is it with neighbors? Oddly enough, we have always suspected our neighbors as well, and for similar reasons. I found little parts and pieces from various drum hardware, a guitar strap, some trash, along a little route through our backyard and over a fence into an empty lot - right next door to the house we jokingly called the crack house. They never came out, never seemed to be home. And they never, ever answered my knocks on their door. Ever. Bit, I'm hoping this works out way better for you. I really, really do. You have an amazing attitude as well.

At a minimum, I suggest you make it your mission to let all your neighbors with whom you are speaking terms know about your suspicions. First, they deserve to be warned. But also, one of them might see something at some point that you will have missed.

Prior to that suggestion, my leading idea was placing a sign in my yard facing that house, which reads "I know who you are and I know what you did". Or maybe just "I know where you live".
At a minimum, I suggest you make it your mission to let all your neighbors with whom you are speaking terms know about your suspicions. First, they deserve to be warned. But also, one of them might see something at some point that you will have missed.
Any maybe they already have?

bitflipper The cops, not so much. Too bad they're not musicians.
On the other hand... I used to work in a conference center, where, among other things, we organized weekly conference calls for what would be the equivalent of the state police. One morning, while on hold to music and waiting for his conference call to begin, a police officer pressed 0 for assistance and filled a formal complaint saying that classical music made him very aggressive. EDIT: I might have understood if it were Wagner... But it wasn't.
