Purple Rhapsody

Having just posted my own Valentines song... I'm considering completely removing it and never attempting another one. Why? Because this is how it should be done!!!

There are not enough superlatives to describe how good this sounds to me.

There was only one point towards the end where there seemed to be quite a lot going on that I think the acoustic/strumming got a bit mixed up with the lead electric, but listening back for a second time I don't hear it so I was probably just imagining it.

Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Terry.

Hey there Terry, no yours was cool :-) I'm glad you liked this, it kind of sprang from nowhere, I like it when songs do that :-)

Nice job.... good writing. I like the acoustic background all the way through.

The nit I have is on the guitar solo... there are a few places where there is a harshness, likely caused by the pick attack....

Hack attack, yeah per my email that's my new metal pick I was taking for a spin :-) I need to learn to control it better, but I did go back and re-edit some more of the attack out of it.

Thanks very much for listening and commenting.

yeah they were, I just put remix 4 up :-) And now that you mention it? They were! I actually made a lot of changes to the mix. If you could A/B it with what I just put up, I'd really appreciate it (while it's fresh :-)

Here's the new .wav

Ive listened to alot of music since my last listen to In Time but here goes.
I hear more piano and strings especially in the intro and the shaker has gone down which I like. The snare i cant make up my mind about. Its loud enough but at the same time it sound a little distant. Maybe its the verb. Dunno, what do you think?

Ive listened to it loads of times now and and I am still really enjoyin it.
Great song

Yeah I've been working on this pig "all night..." I just put RM #5 up. Someone else was complaining about the snare? So I brightened it a bit, took a bit of reverb off, and a bit of pressure. Backed that damn shaker out even farther! LOL! And increased overall volume w/the final limiter in hairbal...

Many more tweaks, but hey? It's a process :-)

I really appreciate your thoughtful input Monkfish :-) I mean, I like people telling me nice things, but I also like to hear people say, DUDE! WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING!!?? LOL!

Thanks again, it's getting better thanks to you and some other folks. I'm still waiting for "the executioner..." He hasn't made his appearance yet. He starts by slapping me in the face HARD! And then gives me a titty twister? And tells me I'm worthless and weak? And I'm lower than whale crap? Always makes me feel like a recruit :-( But this time? I MIGHT BE READY FOR HIM! LOL!

Yeah man, I feel good about this mix now :-) I just listened again a few times. And I'm ready for the DI...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQfbJuBLDak

BRING IT ON BEACH BUM!!

I may post a remix 6, but that will be more for the loudness war than anything else...

Robby, as usual - top drawer writing/performances/mix

I love the guitar solo, it's giving me a bit of a Slash/November Rain vibe - cool

Thanks Strummy, I don't really play the electric anymore except when I need to lay down a lead track when I'm recording. I probably should try to pick it up at least once a week :-( I'm more likely to play the acoustic as that's what I write on. Thank you for listening, and for commenting.

Well, your voice sounds better than it usually does.

The tune is good, not my favorite, but the arrangement is a bit cluttered.

Mix is mid-muddy, and has a series of significant frequency clashes. I would be interested to see a spectrograph on this, and it seems there is a huge hunk of the thing stuck in the middle, which probably accounts for a lot of the separation issues.

It's almost like you didn't read my PDF!

Seriously, there needs a ton a enveloping to make something like this work right.

Your voice and the acoustic rhythm especially sound fantastic. It's a really great song. I think it builds up perfectly (I kept hoping for a 'really big' build after the guitar solo kicked in, but it's probably better to use that restraint) and the different orchestration and piano fit like a glove. Very nice!!!

(only nit - the ending...)
Thanks Dave, yeah I hear you about the ending? Unfortunately though, they all do have to end, I couldn't keep it going and going :-)

I got in finally.

I hate Valentines Day! (I refuse to feel guilty about not padding Hallmarks bottom line.)

But I liked this.

Nice melody.  I thought the piano need to be a little more present.  The distortion on the lead break was a little brittle.  But a very nice tune, well sang as always.

TY Daryl, yeah I've remixed it several times, but the warden ain't lettin me out anytime soon :-( So like OJ? I'm going to take another stab at it...

Ok, here's the 6th "and final" remix... I narrowed things, widened things? I panned things during the mix? I changed EQs dynamically during the mix? I carved out space with EQs? I panned, I was workin in a coal mine goin down down...

He keeps beating me like a redneck wife in a trailer park, but I keep coming back? So I must like it... I hope you can hear a difference, because it's as good as I can make it.

I've not much to add to what's been said, but since I was asked so nicely ...

As heaps of people have said, this sounds good.  The mix works, and the arrangement is well done.

Every now and then something sounds a little funny in the kit, but I'm not sure what.  Do the cymbals and the snare sound like they're apart, played in different rooms or something?  Is the snare squashed a bit sometimes?  Not sure.  Also the lead guitar break towards the end isn't seater right, or seems a little out of place.  Not sure ... probably just a personal taste thing.

It doesn't sound bad though, so don't try to fix it -- if this is #6 and final then let's just say that it's part of the character of the song.

DAMIT! I thought I had it nailed!! The lead is a volume envelop where I drop it after the solo, and I then pan it off center.  The cymbals and snare, yeah I have a verb send on the snare? And I didn't put one on the cymbals :-( Is that something I'm supposed to do? I don't know :-( Maybe I'll try it tomorrow.  The snare is definitely squashed a bit sometimes... I suppose I could find where those are, cause I hear them too? And ride the faders so it's less noticeable with the compressors and limiters?

Why is this **** so hard :-(

Well, I only commented 'cos you asked me to :-)

Put it this way -- and I think it's important -- you'll never, ever get it perfectly right to every single listener.  It's just not possible.  Joe might like his snares to be all Phil Collins and with disturbing amounts of that gated reverb; Bill might prefer a Cake approach (minimalistic).  Joe and Bill will never agree on a mix.  That's life, I'm afraid.

I mix until I'm happy.  I mix until I've created what *I* was intending to.  Often I get good tips on here (and other CW forums) on how to fix things I didn't know I could, but wish I did.  That's great.  Often I get told that someone doesn't like something that I did ... but I like it that way, so I keep it.

If you come in here searching for 100% acceptance on your songs, I doubt you'll ever be satisfied.

Later, daniel.
