The talk of gun control after a massacre like the one in Vegas is something that's largely driven by the media to divert attention from the elephant in the room - which is that the media's sensationalist coverage of these psychopaths is what drives them to kill in the first place

The Joe Walsh song Dirty Laundry comes to mind...

Don Henley, no?

I think it was Henley although he ripped off the Bangles' song, "Dirty Panties."

The bottom line is if someone wants to commit mass murder or any kind of terror they will find a way and there are many types of items one could use to do it. I don't believe in disarming people because of the few sick bastards out there. There will always be crazy people and we should be able to protect ourselves. I think some people who are in some kind of a bad way in their life see these kind of terror acts as a way to be famous(in their mind) and want to be recorded as part of history events. I think anyone who wants to purchase a weapon should not only have a complete background check but it should be mandatory that they take a safety course as well.   I don't think weapons should be sold at flea markets either.

Why, when some drunk gets behind the wheel of her car, drives the wrong direction on the freeway and plows head-on into another car, killing those inside, do people not talk about taking cars away from sober people?

The thing I'm finding hard to believe about this whole story is how long it apparently took the cops to find his room. It took them...how long? We're expected to believe that they had no idea which floor he was on, and had to work their way down from the top. They're now saying they only found him after the smoke from his guns set off a fire alarm.

Really?

First of all, he shot out two huge floor to ceiling windows on a high floor. Even in the dark (which isn't really that dark in Vegas), it would have been a simple matter to identify the building the shots were coming from, scan the facade of identical glass panels, see the broken ones, observe the flashes of gunfire coming from them and work out from there which floor he was on and also where on that floor he was located.

Not only that, but I'm presuming there were many other guests staying on the same floor as him. The noise from those guns would have been deafening. Do they really expect us to believe that nobody heard the din from constant automatic gunfire on their floor and reported it? Either the Vegas police are uncommonly stupid, or there's something which doesn't pass the smell test about this whole account.

Not only that, but using vehicles as a mass killing weapon has now been tried and tested. The Islamic terrorists in Europe have cottoned onto it, and we're going to start seeing more of those truck attacks. It might even overtake suicide bombings given how much easier it is to rent a truck than it is to make a bomb (or acquire an arsenal of weapons).

The idea of "weapons sold at flea markets" is a bald-faced lie. If one wishes to discuss the merits and/ or drawbacks of various ideas on public policy, one should base those discussions on actual facts and data rather than on emotional appeals designed to obfuscate rather than clarify the issue at hand.

I know this comment was directed at Mosvalve, but I'm not sure what you're implying since guns ARE commonly sold at flea markets (a quick Google search will find several).  Maybe not in Texas?

Because a car is not a weapon, expressly designed for the purpose of killing other human beings.

If you can explain how someone could kill 60 people and injure 500 more, with a car, from hundreds of yards away, that analogy might make some kind of sense.

OK, how about an airplane, then. Since we just celebrated the 16th anniversary of THAT.

The facts are that more people die evey day from automobiles than from firearms. (Which, by the way, are not "
expressly designed for the purpose of killing other human beings" either.

You are certainly free to not like firearms. Even to despise them. And also free to dissemble your opinions on them and on public policy regarding them. But while you can have your own opinions, you can't have your own facts.

From a military perspective, wounding an enemy rather than killing him outright presents a tactical advantage. Besides, what's to keep a member of the military from committing mass murder? Nothing. Remember Nadal Hassan?

Notwithstanding that my hunting rifle was originally designed for the military. So was my single-shot black powder muzzle-loader. There's those pesky facts again.

What puzzles me is why so many people want to put such an inordinate focus on inanimate objects instead of dealing with the bad actors who misuse them. Again, facts show ( I can't remember the numbers) that there are more firearms here in the US in private hands than there are people and only a tiny fraction of them are ever used in any crime at all.

To make this thread music related, I'll quote Ted Nugent, who once remarked"if guns kill people, then all mine are defective."

Anything can be used as a murder weapon. Hell, the #1 murder weapon in the world is the human hand. Evil people are going to do evil things and no amount of legislation that only serves to punish the law-abiding is going to change that.

Recent events in the UK have them talking about acid control. They already have knife control. Where does it end? Do we end up tightly regulating, or even banning altogether, everything? Is that even possible?

Despite some people"s Utopian fantasies to the contrare, we can"t legislate and regulate evil, danger and risk out of existence.

Time to move on. This has gone waaaay over the TOS threshold as it is and although I (and I'm sure many others) could indeed dissect the arguments being made here it would just further the TOS poopage.

I don't like weapons in general.  I wish we all lived in a world where nobody harmed anybody.

I pray for all the souls who lost their lives in this horrible attack.  I pray for their families.  I pray for their friends and loved ones.

My friend was there!  My buddy who used to play drums for me was working at that concert.  That poor guy is from New Orleans.  He lived through Katrina, he lived that concert.

I was in New York on September 11th.  I was in New York during the 1990s riots.  I was living down the street in the 1980s on east 38th when the Cuban Mission was bombed.  I was in London just after the terrorist bombings about 10 - 12 years ago.

But about the Twin Towers?  I grew up in those buildings.  BOTH my parents worked on Wall Street.  I was in and out of those Towers my whole life.

Nothing though, is as scary and heart wrenching as what those people in Vegas went through.  A piece of **** coward firing automatic weaponry into an unarmed crowd.  Very reminiscent to Hitler's SS.

Until all evil is banished, weapons will exist, evil will acquire weapons.

I honestly don't know what the answer is.

I know there is plenty of, "crack control, meth control, opiate and heroin control," people who want drugs still get drugs.   People who want guns, still get guns.

Prayers for the victims of Vegas.

Great idea. A horrible person did a horrible thing. And he did it at a concert, which makes it music related. Kind of.

Whetter or not anyone likes or dislikes guns isn't going to bring anyone back. I didn't mean to get sucked into a gun control debate; I meant to express my amazement at observing how some people want to blame inanimate objects for criminal acts instead of blaming the criminals.

Anyways, I definitely blame the criminal.  I want to know what was up with this girlfriend of his.  Why is shy running around the Philippines with $100k that this guy sent to her.   She is totally involved.  I believe we will eventually find out this was definitely some sort of terrorism.
