Latency with DXi soft synths on Sonar X3 [Solved]
Hi I am having an issue related to latency with DXi soft synths on Sonar X3. It's happening that when I make Tempo changes on a project the soft synth's latency increases when I play notes on my midi keyboard. This happens mainly when the Now Time is next to the tempo change, and the project is not running. Also sometimes, the latency is so long it seems midi is not working. Otherwise, the same doesn't happen when the project is being played or recorded. In this cases the midi controller works properly and there's no latency, and it's also a way to take the midi sounds back, playing notes on the controller. I've checked it with Music Creator 6, but the bug doesn't occur. Also the issue doesn't occur with VST soft synths. If someone could help I'd appreciate. Thanks. Best regards

Hi I'm sorry to insist on with this issue, but I've seen on Wikipedia that DXi soft synths were created in partnership between Cakewalk and Microsoft ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX_plugin#Types_and_compatibility ). Maybe this could be related do DirectX version on Windows 10? (Despite I've checked DirectX effects and they seem to be OK). I also installed Sonar Artist demo version, but the issue continues. Thanks.

X3E? Have you performed a VST reset then a rescan in Sonar preferences?

Hi, Doktor Yes, my Sonar is X3e. I reset the VST plugins and re-scanned them, as you suggested, but still didn't work. Thanks for your response. I’m using some VST plugins like Sound Center and SI, until I can get DXi synths working. Thanks!

DX plugins do not need to be scanned. There should be no difference in latency using DXis or VSTis. For lower latency lower the audio buffers on your audio device. If its ASIO there should be an app for it that will allow one to adjust those buffers.

Actually I've seen a few threads where a VST reset resolved the issue, sorry it didn't work this time.

I don't see how Alex. Keep in mind Sonar didn't have a VST scanner when it was using DX plugins only.

Hi, thanks for the responses Referring to latency, I'm using Behringer ASIO Audio Driver. I tried to change the latency via the driver's control panel, and I felt it improved a bit. But on general the delay when I play notes on midi controller is between 2 and 7 seconds, when the Now Time is next to a different Tempo change (it works fine when Now Time is at the beginning). Also there's a fact that recently I raised latency a bit because some midi notes played on real time were not ending, like a sustain, which forced me to reset midi signal via controller. But the change I made was from 30 to 49 ms of latency output, which helped to stop sustain notes when playing. I also don't remember when this issue started, as before I was using Windows 8.1, two months ago. I didn't notice this issue at that time. Thanks

2 and 7 seconds is horrendously long for latency. Its measured in ms (milliseconds) not seconds. You may have misspoken. If not than you have a real problem.

Maybe I missed it, but do you have any effects plugins loaded in the project? There are certain kinds of effects that can really jack up latency, and are not meant for tracking, where you need a low latency and small buffer, They are meant for mixing/mastering where you can bump your ASIO Buffer Size up super high, to give these kinds of effects enough room to do what they do. If you toggle the Bypass All Effects by pressing 'E' on your computer keyboard, do the latency issues go away? (pressing 'E' again will enable the effects after your test). If they DO, then that is a big clue that one or more plugins is causing your latency issues. (Edited to remove a question about your driver mode) Do you have WiFi on this computer? Bob Bone

OK - I just looked up your listed audio interface - the Behringer UCA 202, and it lists no drivers of its own whatsoever. It's driver downloads search page returns only a link to get ASIO4ALL, which is VERY often problematic for folks. ASIO4ALL is a wrapper bit of software that fools programs into thinking they are using ASIO, but really they are using WDM Windows drivers. While ASIO4ALL does work for some, for many others it is just a problematic piece of crappy software that causes issues just being present on a computer, let alone using it. I do not know if you have the latest version of ASIO4ALL, OR what the stability/usability of it is on Windows 8.1, so that is something to check out. Bob Bone

But for some reason, they have REMOVED them from download area, and even refuse to agree they was ever there! That may be worse separate topic in the hardware section... Lucky I still have them on disk.

Hi, thanks for the responses At first I was using ASIO4ALL from UCA202 page on Behringer site, but for some reason I found the Behringer USB Audio Driver 2.8.40, and I remember it was better, as I was using an old notebook, with 1.7 GHz CPU and 1 GB RAM, running MC5. But yesterday I was browsing the web and I couldn’t find it on Behringer site, but just on third party sites offering drivers downloads, so I quit searching. It makes sense now when I read azslow3's post. I also tried to bypass all plugins with the 'E' key, but didn't work. But what it’s weird is that this delay just happens if there are tempo changes on the project, as if I delete them the issue is gone. Also it happens that my midi controller is a legacy product, and I’ve seen people on internet which couldn’t use it under Windows 8. Fortunately I’m using Windows 10 and the keyboard is working, but I wonder if there is any relation.

I could reproduce it... also in SPlat (latest update). 1.New project 2.Insert TTS-1 3.Play MIDI keys - everything is normal 4.Open Tempo view, add change let say at measure 3. For reproducibility, change 120 to 190 5.Play MIDI keys - everything is normal 6.Move time line to measure 5 7.Play MIDI keys. I get a delay from 2 up to 20-30 seconds (yes, seconds). Level meter on MIDI track react as expected, but sound is coming with the delay. I remember there was such discussion already, but google does not find it. Can someone else reproduce? The Project is 44.1/24

Hi azslow3 Thanks for the links. I read these threads, but still couldn't resolve the issue. I'm also reading Sonar online manual on topics about midi. Sometimes the latency gets lower, after a few tests, but that is just for a moment. I'll try to post it on Problem Reports forum, as suggested Doktor Avalanche. Thanks

So glad to have found this thread, this has been driving me crazy all night. Windows 8.1, SONAR X3 Studio. After messing with this in a complex project, I tried a test project to make sure it was the same issue described: blank project, added TTS-1 synth (separate audio & MIDI tracks), grand piano patch. Played my controller, no latency at all. Added a tempo change at measure 2. Playback still fine. Moved now time to measure 2 and latency jumped to +5 seconds (not milliseconds, seconds). On the meters I can see the MIDI hitting in realtime as I play, but the audio meter doesn't react until several seconds later when the sound plays. Selecting a new now time didn't fix the issue. Close/reload project fixes until you get near another tempo change. Enabling loop (without playing) also has the same effect if there's a tempo change within the loop period. Other synths I use regularly (Dimension Pro, SI-Electric Piano, VB3) do not have the issue - but they're all VSTs. For second test I tried using Rapture (another DXi synth) and it exhibits the same behavior.

I would recommend using version 1.2.2 of Rapture. The DXi version was dropped around 5 years ago. If you do not have a recent installer the update is here http://www.cakewalk.com/S...apture-LE-1-2-2-Update

Thanks scook - I have the newer VST version of Rapture installed, apparently I never got rid of the DXi version. I'm not using Rapture on a regular basis, I just wanted to test with a DXi synth other than TTS-1 to see if the problem was just with TTS-1 or with all DXi synths. Unfortunately, Cakewalk TTS-1 is one of my workhorse synths, I use it a lot. It looks like Cakewalk is on this (per the post azslow3 linked a day ago, thanks mgustavo for opening the problem report!) - however, if there's a good multitimbral VST GM2 softsynth out there that can replace TTS-1 I'd be really interested in recommendations. Most of the posts I'm finding on that are 5+ years old (granted, I was searching from a phone at 3am, so I'll go back to proper digging for that on my own as well )

Hi, cbarnabo I'd like to say that other DXi soft synths have the same problem on Sonar 64 bits (please note I didn't try Sonar 32 bits on my system, but on Music Creator 6 the synths work fine). Also CW support team asked me to try freezing the midi clips on MC 6 and open the project on Sonar, and I saw it works, as the issue occurs only on real time access to the midi controller, when the project is not running or being recorded. I also browsed the web sometimes to find a multitimbral GM2 synth, but didn't find one yet. I tried a soundfont file I found on internet, but I didn't like it too much. Best regards

I did a bit of digging today and must have finally hit the right set of keywords because I found the Sonic-Cat/Luxonix Purity VST softsynth, which I'd not seen before. Purity does what I want: 16 tracks of GM voices, lightweight, good for auditioning MIDI clips or playing around before mapping other voices from other synths. There's a free demo if you want to try it out (demo is limited - injects white noise or silence periodically, and won't save settings), or you can purchase the full version for download for $49USD. I apparently can't post the link for it, but you can find it on KVR, or at "sonic-cat dot com slash purity"

@cbarnabo - you WILL be able to post links after I think something like 25 posts, as well as send Private Messages. (I may be off on the number of posts, but the forum software folks have that built in to help reduce spamming). Anyways - WELCOME! I hope you have a blast with the software. These forums are full of folks who will do their best to try to help you with any issues you may run into, and are well worth checking out for useful techniques on doing things, as well. Bob Bone

Thanks Bob ... I've been using Cakewalk software for literally decades (and was thrilled last year when my ancient 20th-century edition of Home Studio still qualified me for upgrade pricing to SONAR), but I'm finally stretching to where the forums are a HUGE help. I've had SONAR over a year, but my focus has been almost exclusively using it for live performance (not why I bought it, but it's handling the job really nicely). Now I'm getting back to arranging and composing (which is what I used to do and why I had originally bought SONAR), and getting a lot of requests to help record & master material (totally new territory for me), so I'm learning on the fly getting up to speed "everything else". Man, do I wish I'd had this when I was doing community theater sound 20 years ago. :-)
SONAR Platinum, Windows 10, Lenovo G505s laptop (AMD A10 2.50GHz, 8GB, 1TB HDD, Radeon HD 8650G), Tascam US-1800, Roland RD-2000, Novation Impulse-61 (not using Automap), Korg nanoKontrol2 (using AZSlow control surface integration), commonly used softsynths: VB3, Dimension Pro, SI-Electric Piano, Cakewalk TTS-1. I've fixed this for the next SONAR monthly update. Thanks for the reports. This actually broke in 2012 when I did some work on making accurate realtime MIDI timestamping so its not a new issue. We have to do some magic to workaround timestamping bugs in DXi's by pseudo sequencing live input which doesn't work when there is a tempo map present. I circumvent that now when a tempo map is detected.

Hi These are good news. Thanks for the feedback! Also that issue made me think of trying new sounds and news ways to work, but that's cool it's going to be fixed, and on the next update. : ) Best regards.
