I'm about half way through an album project with a band. With one thing and another, we'll be working on that intermittently until about April. See no reason right now to not keep that in Sonar. I also do audiobook editing work, and I have a very fast and efficient process for that in Sonar, which I'm going to stick with. My current plans are to make no changes at all, really. I do feel the need to get up to speed on something else, but I think I'm going to wait for a small mix job to come, say a 2-4 song EP, and see what it's like doig a mix in Reaper (which I've never done). Have mixed in Studio One and Ableton relatively recently, so already have an idea of those. Ultimately, I don't feel in any particular rush.

My only worry is that at some point in the future I am going to have to upgrade my laptop. So we will need to see if someone, somewhere provides us with an unlock code of some sort. I know something along this line has been "promised" but until we have it I tend to remain somewhat sceptical. Only then will I jump ship, so to speak.

Cactus Music Actually let me add that I will pay for a new DAW if that new DAW is the res-erected Sonar. I'm more optimistic than ever. Sonars code is priceless and we WILL see it return. I've learned more about these other DAW's in the last 2 days than I have in the last decade.
This is a classic case of "you dont know what you got till its gone" is probably what a lot of people are realizing, my self included, in the last few days looking at other DAW's. Im there with the resurrection, even if just maintained with regular OS integration changes when required, at some reasonable annual subscription fee. While I did pay for "Lifetime updates" I thought about this risk at the time, but figured mine would probably end before Sonar's LOL. But it wasn't really anymore than I would have paid to update annually. Let's hope some wealthy entrepreneur, rock star or Bill Gates see this as too good of a software to just let die, we should all take to Twitter and start petitioning them. Cheers

I'll keep using SONAR as long as it'll work. Don't see any reason not to. I have downloaded and demoed both REAPER and Studio One. No big issues starting to use them, and I got work done. Those are per now the only contenders. S1 at the top due to ARA integration. I also have MixBus 4, which is more of a stems mixing tool in my book. All the best.

I'm another who is staying on SONAR for a while. I know there are a lot of people who are concerned that Windows 10 will make SONAR unusable. However, I have been using P5 for the past 10 years over a few operating system revisions. Outside 32 bit RAM issues, it works well. Windows is not MacOS. Microsoft tends not to break backwards compatibility in that way. Even if they did something which would make SONAR unusable, it wouldn't be so bad that you couldn't export your MIDI and audio out of projects.

I plan to stay with SONAR as long as it's working reliably. I'm currently working to make sure that I've downloaded everything I need. I have a number of Cakewalk products that I still use that are not installed by Command Center. I also want to keep older versions back to 8.5 if I can. Hopefully, we'll be able to maintain some sort of forum for collaboration and collaborative support.

Yep, staying in there for as long as I can. I too have invested a heck of a lot of money over the last 25+ years and rode the X1 uncertainties at the time (let's face it, it was bad !). Could have bailed out then, but I had faith and trust in all the Bakers and Noel as CTO. This time it's a bit more serious, but let's see what happens. I'll be looking around, but it won't be a priority just yet. Basically, don't want to be one of the rats ...

I'm not going anywhere! I love Sonar and I'm very saddened by what's happened, but I'll use it for as long as I possibly can. Hopefully, by the time it's no longer usable someone would have picked up the development for Sonar or one of the other DAW's has finally caught up to what Sonar currently is.

I'm sticking with SONAR as long as it functions properly. Meanwhile I'll look into other DAWs, as time allows. I have and occasionally use Mixbus. I also have Reaper that I bought for another reason (Use as a meter bridge with my A&H QU32 mixer for live theatrical and festival shows. Because it allows stacking the console view so I can see all 32 tracks on one screen of the laptop). Not making any knee jerk reactions at this time. Too many projects to finish. Wishing the Cakewalk devs the best. Saddest news for them.

There aren't any pressing reasons to change. SONAR ain't going anywhere fast - how could it - it is dead? It works fine right now on win 7 and 10 and I've never used my DAW computer for games or porn and don't leave them hooked up to the internet. I got Mixcraft because ... it looks simple to use and a lot like SONAR and uses standard PC formats. And it is cheap back up and looks fun. I imagine I can learn enough about making music with it without switching full time until I get back projects done. And then I'll see if it warrants switching over.

in the 14 years I've posted here I don't think I've ever had a 4 page thread. :) Thanks to all and mostly what I see is a positive "YES" we are the smart ones and we spend our money on Hardware , not more software. As I said, I'm looking forward to pullng the plug and just getting some recording done. I worked last night on 38 backing tracks fine tuning them for 2 gigs we we have next week. To think of getting that done on ANY other DAW would be impossible. ANd this is the heart of the matter and where we all part ways. WORKFLOW For those who are saying they are experiencing faster workflows in other DAW's well there you go- That is obviously the best DAW for you no questions asked. And I am truthfully happy for all who who switch DAw's and find the grass is greener. This is exactly why a lot of us will stay with Sonar. WORKFLOW I myself cannot get by without many of the features that Sonar has that as far as I can tell no other DAW has all these features. The drag and drop audio to midi conversion alone rules out 90% of the contenders. All my backing tracks are depending on me playing a real bass and converting that to midi. Take me sooo little time. I don't have to worry about the real bass tone or even little mistakes, so one take and I'm done HUGE time-saver. And I have many old projects that I use real drums on that I need to convert to midi as well. I don't think any other DAW has drum replacer. And all the demos including Cubase.. where's the SMART TOOL? There was a few who posted here asking questions about authorization and such. Please take the time to read some of the very detailed thread that cover these topics.

I'm definitely staying with Sonar. Like most people have already stated it has everything I need and will be here for as long as I need it to be. I have other DAWS installed on my machine, but none of them even comes close to Sonar. Cakewalk has always been fantastic with their customer support and I have faith that they will not go away before leaving us with the tools we need to keep Splat running for many years to come! I've been planning on staying and probably still will. BUT I'm also thinking that when I'm ready to change the cross grade deals won't be as attractive so I do need to take this into account. If I do buy another product then logically I'll start using it. I already have unsupported hardware with drivers and another concern for me is that things that work for me now with Sonar might not work with a replacement. Sadly we are all trying to make these important decisions under the wrong circumstances.

Whoa... That takes me back... Yeah and "me too" since the 90s. Having a whole bunch of DAWs if you're a professional might make sense (or not?), it's a bit like being quote "a full stack developer" unquote in IT. I'm PRV midi oriented & the latest Splat takes care of that, as for AE side, that will always have it's ongoing mysteries & iZotope helps smooth the way... It's that "uncaught exception" crash on a project load or some other glitch that now won't be addressed, which I can't figure out that bothers me... So hopefully a knowledgeable community will persist. The machine's w10 barely 2 years old with a ton of ram & disk space so until Splat commits Hara-Kiri or is done in by the latest MS update why waste another nickle and... As a purchaser of the lifetime updates, the "me too" in this context also refers to "corporate rape" and in the words of a rapist "So Sad"!

Hey Cactus, I haven't posted that much over the years but have read lots of your posts and they are some of the ones I've enjoyed! I'll repeat what I said in another thread here; I agree with most of the comments in this thread which is why I'm not going away from this Forum or Sonar just yet! I think some people are overreacting because while development has been ceased, no one has said that the company is dead just yet so we don't know what support is going to be offered or exactly what Cakewalk is doing going forward which could include bug-fixes for a period of time if something gets broken by an update. I bought lifetime updates during the summer of last year so I'm a little pissed that I only got 15 months of updates but when I look how many there have been plus what new functionality has been added, together with all the free additions, I realise that at worst I've broken even so I'm not getting all screwed up about all this as long as if they pull the servers, we get delivered a lifetime key which will allow re-installation as and when required otherwise I will feel as though I've been mugged off!!! Something I'd like to highlight here because some folks seem to have lost sight of is that before rolling updates we all used Sonar for months on end, 6 plus months actually before updates were released and because of an old project which I used v8.5 on, I was able to run this until a couple of years go before I started getting random crashes due to some run-time library issue so my plan is to stick with Sonar at least until Windows 7 goes EOL in Jan 2020 which is 2 years away! At that point, as I may have to build a new studio PC, I'll reassess my requirements then but I'm not panic buying and jumping ship to another DAW just now thanks. :-)

All praise the Cakewalk Bunny. All praise the Cakewalk Bunny. All praise the Cakewalk Bunny. I'll stay with SPlat until there is a compelling reason to switch. I started home recording with a dual cassette deck and then moved on to a Tascam Portastudio (4 track cassette) and then to a Korg D8 (8 track digital) and then moved over to PCs. When buying HW and getting lite versions of recording SW I normally tried them and I'd glance at reviews of DAW SW, but nothing compelled me to leave Sonar, although I do use Live to sketch out ideas. Looking around again and reading comments about other DAW SW on this forum I still don't feel compelled to leave SPlat. In a few years I'll probably replace my DAW and I may replace my DAW SW then. I've seen some real innovation in recording technology - tape to digital to home PC. Is something like that going to happen in the near future? Has there been any real innovation in DAW SW? Will there be any? Does anyone else think that monthly updates has screwed with people? If Sonar was being released yearly would so many people (seemingly) need to switch so suddenly? I, for one, don't feel like I've been screwed by Cakewalk. The price I paid for lifetime updates isn't any different than if I had been doing annual updates. All praise the Cakewalk Bunny. All praise the Cakewalk Bunny. All praise the Cakewalk Bunny.

I'm staying with Splat as long as it will work, hopefully a long time! I bought Cubase for the chord track and for me, that's about all it's good for, at least for me, I found it to be very user unfriendly, so for as long as Cakewalk works, I'm not in the DAW market.

I have the latest SPLAT installed on a new custom built machine with a modified Windows that will never update. As long as that machine will run I will stay on SONAR. I am looking at Studio One as a backup-plan though.

Hello, As long as Sonar works on my computer, I stay and keep having fun. I am a hobyist, and Sonar Platinium is user friendly, well integrated with Windows and i like to use Rapture Pro and the SI-instruments family. Thanks to RickJP909 for reminding that: "... while development has been ceased, no one has said that the company is dead just yet so we don't know what support is going to be offered or exactly what Cakewalk is doing going forward which could include bug-fixes for a period of time if something gets broken by an update." Hope that Cakewalk will soon officialy clarify what happens to Sonar (and all the related products) and how they will manage their customers during the next months (off line activation with/without lock to the computer/auth server). Wait and see, C. (sorry for my bad english)

its a shame as cakewalk seems to be unlucky with whoever takes them over. I was once a loyal cakewalk man from the pro audio to sonar 7. then returned sonar artist . what put me off is the marketing. why should I buy a product then after the first year I have to pay again just for updates? upgrade yes update, not sure. sonar is definitely a different animal very powerful and loads of good workflow ideas. imo I found sonar resembled project 5 pretty much the same layout. that's where cakewalk shot themselves in the foot and ableton live ran with the idea and aint looked back. so I wasn't surprised they got outed by Gibson , I went to fl studio after sonar 7 and life time updates couldn't be happier. I wish cakewalk and users the best, lets hope they sort things out.they have listen to users but looks like little to late

I hope Microsoft buys Cakewalk and we'll be happy.
