Busy doings tons of research as unfortunately I have to know that my DAW will always be tiptop - this is my business. It's hilarious to see that the DAWs I used to hate have mostly now incorporated all the stuff I love about SPLAT. I will never discard Sonar but I will have to crossgrade - PT12 and Cubase 9.5 Pro look both look very good. At least PT now has track freeze - hahaha!

Yes, it's a curious thing in the DAW world that Sonar always comes up as #8 in the polls . . . yet it has all the features that the other DAWs are just finally getting around to . . . eg. I was looking at Cubase 9.5, and one of their new features is a 64 bit double precision engine.
Cakewalk by Bandlab, Cubase, RME Babyface Pro, Intel i7 3770K @3.5Ghz, Asus P8Z77-VPro/Thunderbolt, 32GB DDR3 RAM, GeForce GTX 660 Ti, 250 GB OS SSD, 2TB HDD samples, Win 10 Pro 64 bit, backed up by Macrium Reflect, Novation Impulse 61 Midi Key Controller, Tannoy Active Near Field Monitors, Guitars by Vantage, Gibson, Yamaki and Ovation.

Umm.... As far as I know the core engine always was 64bit precision. It's the mixing engine that is updated. I guess that's possible because they get rid of the 32bit plugins and have go for 64bit solely. But I must admit I am not sure about that. Anyway - All stuff is 64bit now, so that could no longer be an "hurdle" for those that want high precision in all layers of the application. And for that 8th place. Well - I guess the landscape of DAW users has changed a bit over the years. Like it or not, the majority of users are more EDM orientated. That means the DAW's that focus more on EDM (and thus more on Loops, samples, synths and MIDI), just got sold more. Keep in mind that's no judgment about quality or creativity on my side, but only an observation. As a result the DAW's that target those users get a higher score. In this case it's FL-Studio, Ableton and Reason that end up high in the scores. It's also the reason that Steinberg Pro is 3th (personally I think MIDI handling is better in Cubase than in Sonar, but nobody has to agree with me of course). It's simply because all those DAW's target the current user base better. And, like it or not, the number of units sold are part of the survival of those DAW's. It's just cold calculation, but far from unimportant. I personally think that if the bakers had more concentrated on the matrix view and mad it more usable, they had a far higher score with Sonar. In my opinion dumping Project 5 years ago was one of the biggest mistakes Cakewalk has ever made. Seeing the DAW users landscape now, they would had a absolute winner in their hands (yes I still play around with Project 5 now and then. It still runs acceptable, although it clearly shows it's age). It's a shame that this never had to be. All of this is a personal view, of course.

Sonar is so advanced and efficient that it is still a great DAW with no future updates. Most of the problems under the hood have been fixed. As long as it works, I'm going to use it in some capacity. The only problems I can foresee in the far future are new plugs I might want that wouldn't work in Sonar and help in case I can't figure out how to do something in Sonar. So I hope some sort of cult of Sonar users sticks around with a forum to help each other.

Card-carrying Sonar cultist here. I've paid for every version since 2.2. What bugs me is that a weak company bought it and couldn't keep it afloat. Bad luck for us.

I met Cakewalk Apprentice in the 90th, when I bought a Waveblaster daughterboard. It opened a complete new world for me and I made a lot of midi songs. Later I switched to Reason because of the virtual rack, Last year, I re-dicovered Cakewalk with Sonar - the only DAW, that could open my wrk files. I have had Reason, Reaper & Cubase to that time already. I started with Sonar Artist, that made me almost very happy, because of the almost instantly & intuitive usable midi-implementation. Then with the lifetime-offer I decided to get a new copy of SonatR Platinum, that I did not regret until today. Since that time it has become my main DAW. It is easy & intuitive usable for me, even I have almost all other Daws also. For composing I use the midi part, but it is also an easy task with the templates to take the life-recorded matter from my "oldies" Blues band and make a fast mix-up. I am born in the end of the 50th, so I hope to use Sonar still very long. I dont need to change, as I have enough alternatives. I will use it as long as it works! It is a part of my personal history, so no chance to give it up!

Reboot your system first. 10.2017 is very robust but if you have problems with the latest build, you can select any older build in Command Center. Hope this helps. If this does not help, please describe your problem in more detail and give exact steps for others how to reproduce it. Screen capture and video may also help.

The actual version works like a charm. I will do proper archiving of my projects (audio bounce, MIDI export, etc.) in the future, but you should do that anyway. It sounds like you just got the latest version of a software and everybody things it is broken right now. It is the FINAL version of Sonar. I am working with Office 2010 and have no need to switch to the actual version right now. It is the same with my DAW: There is no need to switch right now and this will not change within the next years. My machine runs rock-solid, I do backups and Recovery-procedures on a regular basis and do not install free stuff on it without need. Long story short: I am covered until 2020 (W7), then probably there is a way to install PLAT on a new machine and I will be covered another couple of years - or find something I really like.

I will continue to use SPLAT as long as possible. But will buy another DAW just as a precaution. Probably S1 If a good deal is offered for a crossgrade. Mostly recording audio. (Latest "The Damps Project" check us out on Spotify or ITunes.)

Note: please keep to topic here, we ( I ) only want to hear if your staying with Sonar, If your having problems with it start a thread there's still plenty of help. Thank you for your cooperation. "I will do proper archiving of my projects (audio bounce, MIDI export, etc.) in the future, but you should do that anyway." I have always been in the habit of saving my important projects as a MIDI file for back up. Midi files can be opened in any DAW. For me they are the most work I put into many songs. I can always re sing or re play my guitar. But my drums and keyboard parts are a lot of work and the glue that would be hard to re do. Between the midi file and the audio folder we have a good backup.

Sonar god's - Please allow one final Update so that my current version of Platinum will be up to date. I was just about to pay for the update when this all came down... Please allow Sonar to keep running, as we purchase this as a lifetime product - I thought. There is just to much work to change over to another DAW... Please! dmc

I'm not going anywhere.. Been using Sonar (for myself) since Sonar3. Was using it in small studios since Cakewalk Pro9. All the others seemed frail in comparison. Besides, SPLAT on Windows 7 64 is just fine.

Oh yeah, I'm sticking with Sonar until I am forced to change. I mean, why would I run out and spend $$ on a new DAW, struggle through the learning curve, spend time finding work-arounds with the new DAW to do things I can do easily in Sonar, and spend hours & hours converting old projects to whatever format the new DAW needs to open them? I ran 8.5 on an XP machine until this last spring, and was still turning out good recordings. I only switched because of hardware issues that were beginning to plague the XP machine, and could finally justify the financial expenditure to the finance committee. (AKA my lovely wife.) So I figure that the few bugs that SPLAT currently has are not stopping me from making recordings now, and while I am really bummed about no new updates, fixes, etc, I see no reason to stop using a perfectly good tool. I still own hand tools from companies that have disappeared, and they all still serve me well. I realize that software is a little different, but I look at it the same way: why stop using something that works? So yeah, I'm staying with Sonar, and will count on the forum members (wherever we all land on the 'net) for technical support & advice. Life is good. :-)

I started with Sonar X3 in June of 2014 after losing my patience with Magix/Samplitude. It took some time for the learning curve but I'm finally to the point where I feel comfortable with it and the last several projects were (almost) effortless. I kept my eyes on the forums here. Indeed, I learned most of what I know from my fine co users who frequented this forum. If I had a problem, I'd post a question and most of time I would get a workable answer within an hour. I'm so grateful to all the co users who gave me the answers needed in a very timely manner. You guys are the greatest! I also observed on the forum many Sonar users who were champing at the bit to get the latest newest version of Sonar (Platinum), and while I was tempted to at least upgrade to X3 Studios new counterpart, Professional, I still hesitated and decided to stay with what I had. I knew how it worked and I was getting comfortable with it and didn't feel as if I needed to go further. Now I'm really glad I stayed with X3 because it seems everybody's biggest fear is losing access to their DAW if Cakewalk's authentication servers were taken down. This is a legitimate concern, but because I stayed with X3e I can have the confidence that if my system crashed and I had to reload everything I could get my DAW back to where it is now as X3 does not require authorization. I took the precaution to DL all of the install files (I have the disc, but if my next PC doesn't have a optical drive I can still install this way) I'm not gloating. I really feel bad for you guys that spent $500.00 plus for Platinum or upgraded on the strength of the "Lifetime" promise and/or the subscription plan. You're getting a crappy deal and something should be able to be done for you, and I hope ultimately there is. My plans are to keep using X3e as I have been. If I need to replace my PC at some point, I'll try to reinstall X3 on it but if it won't fly I'll try Reaper. Those are my plans. Best of luck to all you guys. I really hope this works out for everybody. John B

That is exactly why I made sure I grabbed absolutely everything in My Products, including the older Sonar versions I upgraded from. I want lots of possible options to keep Sonar alive, regardless of what comes down from Cakewalk / Gibson over the next while.

I will be staying with sonar. Sonar has always been years ahead of the curve. I will use it the way it is for years to come, unless there is a serious incompatiblity issue with something that I have to use. I have used other DAWS and became quickly frustrated with how the workflow was, lack of options, lack of ability to do what I was used to doing. I remember when sonar was the only daw that had a 64 bit audio engine in a 32 bit operating system. I always threw that in the face of a protools fanboy and they just would have nothing to say. actually some people would have something like "protools has --- and ---" Oh cool, im glad you finally got that, cuz sonar had that 4 years ago! lol I will not be using a less capable DAW at this moment. I think eveyone is emotional and they dont really make sense with their choice in switching DAWS right NOW. Like why? what for? you really want less? Sonar is a complete well rounded masterpiece of software that doesnt really need updating anyway. I honestly havent updated mine in 8 months! It still records and does way more than presonus studio one, protools, cubase, etc. PEOPLE NEED TO REMEMBER that the latest and greatest updates isnt whats making your music. YOU ARE. So just because Sonar wont have anymore updates doesnt mean the software is going to handicap your creativity! If your music is sucking that bad, then you need to just simply make better music! I also just dont see Sonars software just doing nothing. Something is going to happen. Sonar has a huge fanbase and proven software that should be the industry standard. Someone is going to buy it, or they are going to reopen the department under another name... something... Its crazy to think that they had all of that income on subscriptions and they decided to just the door on making money? I think a bankruptcy is in the near future for Gibson and they want to keep Sonar... thats my uneducated assumption based on no research btw. But it is the only immediate thought that makes sense. They need to rebrand sonar and reintroduce it to build hype and get these new comers to try it. Native INstruments should buy it!! They need something like Sonar, badly!! anyways im just rambling... bye!!!

could be a driver issue, virus, something else besides sonar etc. do a quick install on a spare hard drive. new operating system, and just sonar. and see if you still have the same issue. if not then you know something else is to blame besides the version sonar you are using!!!

Mike Real could be a driver issue, virus, something else besides sonar etc. do a quick install on a spare hard drive. new operating system, and just sonar. and see if you still have the same issue. if not then you know something else is to blame besides the version sonar you are using!!!
You on the right thread?

I will be using Cakewalk Sonar software for as long as I am able and recording music. I know I have given kudos to Reaper, but Reaper is just too Generic for me to use and has so many distractions of things that I will never use. I am happy with Sonar and my Cakewalk software, I don't see myself ever using anything else to record with, unless god forbid I end up without any choice in the matter, something like my PC fails and I can't reinstall even from Image considering the hardware on a new PC/Hard drive is different and wont allow it to work.
We shall see what happens. I'm not going to jump ship, a lot of these employee's for cakewalk over the years put their hard work into this software, for me it is working perfectly now. I can't see the point in moving to another DAW right now considering it's working great for me because moving to another daw might possibly invite NEW PROBLEMS and LESS OPTIONS. I plan on using Cakewalk Sonar until I no longer have the option to do so. Hopefully something changes and there is a rebirth of Cakewalk Sonar, we shall see.... Happy Holidays everyone!
