Official Sonar Cultist here.

somebody, maybe even you.......is last version of sonar unstable......it keeps not recognising my midi keyboard, after hours of recognising it?..........and then.....while a certain soft synth is highlighted.....it still plays the other one that's in-highlighted....like on a bass track, I double click and it brings up drums???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? is there a stabler version I can roll back to????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????.

could be a driver issue, virus, something else besides sonar etc.    do a quick install on a spare hard drive. new operating system, and just sonar. and see if you still have the same issue. if not then you know something else is to blame besides the version sonar you are using!!!

Re: Lets Hear from you folks who are going to stay with Sonar! 2017/11/28 21:33:37 (permalink)
I'm in two minds about Sonar and my future with it. On the one hand, trialing other DAWs makes you realize how many ways Sonar had it right. And it's little things, like when I play with S1 and see no peak level readout on the meters. Then there's Sonar's ease of routing, exporting, recording synths to audio etc. It has an excellent workflow and things like workspace arrangement, zooming in and out of tracks, auto-zoom, smart grid and the smart tool become almost like an extension of your brain once you're familiar with them.

On the other hand, there was a lot wrong with Sonar. And much of it was weird, almost unquantifiable stuff that's impossible to reproduce for a bug report. Things like projects developing weirdness as they got bigger and older (I even had to abandon and recreate a few projects that developed oddities). As an example, I'm working on a project now in which the Aim-Assist line is a few measures out whenever I drag a clip. I've had clips suddenly jump to another part of the screen (including other tracks) when I dropped them. I've had loads of bizarre stuff happen with automation lanes, like recording multiple parameters on a synth only to find that some of the parameters I moved didn't end up being recorded. I've had lanes disappear never to be seen again. I've had all sorts of trouble associated with those damn "orphaned envelopes," and phantom, elusive nodes that I couldn't find anywhere nonetheless artificially extending the length of my track so that "fit to screen" didn't work as expected. There is so much other annoying stuff, like the browser not supporting back/forward navigation buttons on mice, and plugin/send menus that didn't fit on screen properly. Recently I've had Sonar resetting a bunch of Waves EQ's each time I load the project, and this is a horrible, deal breaking problem that I've suffered on and off since first using Sonar in 2012.

In short, the problem with Sonar has always been that it's an old program which has picked up a bunch of oddities along the way, and has probably suffered a little under the strain of all that new stuff being piled on top of it. I'm willing to bet that there were times that Noel and his crew felt hindered by a lot of legacy stuff in the program, stuff that would probably have been written a lot differently had Sonar been designed from scratch today. The oddities that I experienced on a daily basis absolutely messed with my workflow and productivity, and as a beta tester I spent many fruitless hours trying to come up with recipes for weird, phantom bugs that would be there one minute, gone the next. I almost felt like I was not performing as a tester because of the number of weird issues I couldn't isolate, and because so many of these issues are there one minute and resolve themselves the next, it was hard not to feel like user error might be the culprit even when you were almost certain it wasn't.

So ultimately, I'm excited about leaving those oddities and quirks behind and starting afresh with a younger program that's had its foundations modeled on today's technology rather than technology from 30 years ago. I feel no "loyalty" toward Sonar, after all it's not a conscious being and has no feelings. I'm going to keep using it for as long as I'm still working on the many projects I have in development, but I think the next new project I start will be in my shiny new DAW (whatever that may be).

Already posted this in the Software forum 4 days ago, but I might as well post it here, too.

I already have a number of DAWs (probably too many), but the only flagship I've ever purchased was SONAR X3 Pro, then upgrading to "lifetime" SPlat. I'll continue using SONAR as my main squeeze for the time being, with an eye out for my next flagship.

I just updated from X3 to Professional two weeks ago on Black Fri special the other day Doh! Havent installed it yet. am getting back into recording, after a few years of working weekends coming to an end soon, so a little more looking at this forum might of alerted me to the writing on the wall.
Will have to keep it a while to get my dollars worth. But have used X3 when I could all this time so Sonar Pro will be fine for a few more years.

Please don't answer Hijackers. If they have issues with Sonar they can start a new thread. This ones long enough without going off topic.

Which is=  "I am staying with Sonar"

Sure Sonar has it's quirks, all software seems to. But myself,  I go months on end without an issue. So once again it's the big reason to stay on board --- It works really well for me.. it certainly doesn't work that way for others and so those people should and will purchase a new DAW. There are infinite ways to use a DAW and you need to find the one that does everything you need it to do. For me it's always been Sonar.

Thanks once agin to all who have checked in and are planning to stay on board. Time will tell were this leads us.

I'm gonna keep on keepin' on as long as I can. I got a new pc comin' and it should arrive by 12/7 and I hope I can get sonar installed, activated and all that I need to do to get back in the game (My old 10 year old DAW died this summer). I so hope these forums will not dissolve!

I'm staying, been with cake since PA5, When I told my wife of cakewalks demise and mentioned other daws she didn't even know there were others. Our daughter uses garage band. She's a Mac girl, and we thought we raised her right. I've learned so much from this forum, I read it every day. Thanks for your help.

Back when I had my Dokorder 7140, mixing through a Tapco mixer technology was passing me by, and I wonder if the heads hadn't worn out would I still be using it?

Ok, I said this in my opening line of this thread!
"I'm not paying 1 cent for another DAW. Possibly never. I have the best DAW and it will still run 10 years from now,,, I'll be 74.."

I lied,,  I just paid $29 for Harrison Mix Buss. But this is not to replace Sonar. I use Wave Lab for Mastering. Gold Wave for mp3 conversion and Nero for CD burning.  Mix Bus 8 has some unique mojo for working with pure audio recordings so I want it for my live audio recording set up. It's a different tool for a different job like the others I just mentioned.

Today we ( Uncle Ruckel)  played a gig with 36 brand new tracks all made in Sonar and sounding great.
Meet my new band:
Johnnyv on the Dim Pro Full acoustic bass
Sock Monkey on the Air Mini Grand, D33 and the Lounge Lizard
Cactus on the AD2 Custom kit.
Curt on Seagull 12 string and Banjo
Me on Guitar, Mandolin and dobro.

Plan to continue using 8.5, along with Reaper. Thought about the Cubase crossgrade, but pretty sure 8.5 doesn't qualify. But even if it did, I see no reason to change what I'm doing, because it works for me. And the Cubase forum just doesn't have the warm feel, not to mention rapid response, of this place. I'll be looking to haunt whichever Son Of Sonar Forum survives.

I am staying with SONAR until it won't run any more. I may take advantage of the nice Studio One cross-grade offer to have that as Plan B, but based on my time with the S1 demo, SONAR is it for me.

As a hobby musician I will use sonar as long as possible. As stable as sonar with me now I do not know why I should buy me in the next few years another sequencer. I would then rather invest the money in plugins or virtual instruments.

Features in Sonar
ARA support
VST3 support
WIN10 compatible
64bit mix engine
Rewire (with Kinetic or P5 :))
creative tools like drum replacer
matrix editor .... and so on
and all the plugins like PX64, Breverb, Console emulator ... and so on.
I do not know now how the other daws are. For the last time I had cubase and logic in mind in '98. However, I have no need for it at all.
the only stone that can get in my way is the product activation during a new installation. I hope, if cakewalk actually close, we get as a user an art offline activation file.

P.s .: I still can not imagine that cakewalk actually stops. I think there will be another surprise next year. There are some software vendors with a much smaller customer base who can easily survive. I think there's something else coming.

cheers tomas

I think we have all wasted too much time and energy looking around for alternatives to SPLAT when, if truth be told, it should run for years to come without problems. Up until I made the move to Sonar Artist (1 year) and then SPLAT lifetime updates (sucker!), I'd been using Sonar 8.5 for years without complaint. I think SPLAT spoilt us, and now we feel really hard done by to find anything similar.
About 20 years ago I worked in an audio editing studio (I was a project manager, not editor) and the studio used Cool Edit (yep you read it) before switching to Pro Tools. I hated Pro Tools. I didn't find it intuitive or user friendly. That's when I bought my first Sonar Home Studio 2004. From there I went to Sonar 4 Studio, then Producer, upgraded to Sonar 8. I never ever wanted to go back to using Pro Tools, even if it is the industry standard. It's clunky. Yuck!
My editor friends have recommended Reaper whole-heartedly, and I'm definately going to check it out and road test it. But in the meantime - I just want to get back to making music and not panic about Sonar going off-line.
Back-up all the exe files - download some demo DAWs - But above all, get back to making music guys.

Not to say it hasn't happened, but I've worked in IT for a long time, and I've never known a Windows update to render a computer or a program inoperable. Occasionally, there are problems where a feature doesn't work properly or work at all. If your DAW doesn't need to be on the internet, you can turn off automatic updates, too.

For anyone really worried about holding on, I would suggest using imaging software like Macrium Reflect or Acronis True Image to take a snapshot of your system that you can restore whenever you want. It's probably a good idea to use offline activation and have all your serials and codes backed-up, as well.

Me too.

I understand that folks on this forum feel the need to move away but it's too soon IMHO.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's an announcement in the coming days and weeks that the guys at Cakewalk are back in business. If that happens, I'm upgrading to Platinum immediately.

In the meantime, the product is working well and stable.

Until a windows update renders it unusable I cant see a reason not to keep it
and although I have bought Mixbus I use it together with Sonar Platinum not
in place of it.
I also have Mixcraft and Pro Tools First but I prefer Sonar.

You seem to have an obssession in knocking those who decide to stick with Sonar. Why ?

You’ve done the same in a couple of threads. You’ll be forcing me to use the Tr...... word soon.

Everyone has there opinion, you even have yours. But don’t keep knocking others.

The only attachment is to the money in my bank account, and my only thought is to where my time is best spent. I see no need to change either..
