Lifetime updates deadline now December 31, 2016 ??
Am I seeing this right ? I just happened to notice that the lifetimes updates notice still shows up on the main page of Cakewalk. Initially, I thought as its just two days after the deadline, they might have just not got around to remove that and could be just a matter of time. But guess what, I click the "Buy Now" link and it now shows the deadline as December 31st, 2016 !! I mean, what was the real point of having the August 31st, 2016 deadline ? I went for it due to repeated reminders that it would be the final date for availing the option and now its extended by 4 more months ? Why was it not extended much earlier, say a couple of weeks or a month back ? I had to advance any plans to expend the amount because of the deadline. If I knew, I could have waited for 4 more months ! How does this make any sense ? Could we assume that on January 01st, 2017, we could expect the deadline to move to say, April 30th, 2017 or something ? Or maybe the option to avail the lifetime updates could stay for a lifetime ?

One-time purchases made between June 1st and December 31st, 2016 include Lifetime Updates. This does not apply to monthly payments. Learn more Yes this is what is showing on the product purchase page. I predicted this. Windows 10 , however , didn't sustain their offer. It's now $150 and up.

I was right. I knew they wouldn't ditch this. I would eventually like to know from Cakewalk the total amount of lifetime licenses.

Actually the original offer, which allowed a pro rated price reduction based on whether you had renewed, is gone and not coming back. This allowed many people to get lifetime updates for as little as $99. If you didn't grab it at that price, there's nothing you can do about it now. However, Cakewalk received a lot of inquiries from people who didn't have the money, were on vacation, and in particular, budgeted money for holiday spending but not during the summer (Christmas bonuses etc.) and were asking if there might be some kind of special in the future. Given the response, and the holiday season being not that far away, you can still purchase Lifetime Updates - but ONLY at the full $199 price, regardless of whether you renewed or not, or any other circumstances.

I was under the impression after the AUg 31 deadline, lifetime updates would then be offered at $199 upgrade, until further notice. ...just that the "deal for some" is expiring at the end of August.

So it was a money grab. It cost me full price, only 6 months after upgrading to Platinum. I could have waited till the end of the year for no extra cost. Can I have a refund ?

I believe the original deal was offered to those that had Platinum for the last year or so. Not newer purchasers. Kind of a "thank you" to those that jumped on the SPlat upgrade when it first came out.

Yup - the deal that had been there was to be able to obtain the lifetime updates at a particular reduced price. Lifetime updates ARE still available, and is still A deal, but for a still reduced price of $199 usd until Dec 31. I would presume that if lifetime updates remain something that can be purchased, that the price would likely go up to something higher than the still discounted $199, come Jan 1, 2017. It was a fantastic deal, remains a great deal, and will likely still make sense to those who come to it after Jan 1, but will be obviously not as sweet as the original offer - now past - or than the current $199. Even at $199, it's basically paying for a one-year annual cost, then getting the rest of time's worth of updates for nothing. So, nobody got snookered, or is going to - they have a good offer at a great price STILL, trying to accommodate folks who needed more time to come up with the budget to afford it. I have seen them do things like that for individuals before, who didn't get paid til two days after some individual product came off of being on sale, but to offer the lifetime deal at $199 to try to help as many get on board as possible for several more months is downright cool of them. I haven't liked this whole thing from the start even though it may well be the best offer ever. Glad I didn't purchase the lifetime offer as I was short on cash and figured if that was it then forget it. Might jump on it before the end of the year but this whole thing reeks of cash grab. If nothing else Cake should have brought it back as a later offer instead of just extending it like this. My 2 cents.

Cakewalk had no idea what to expect when they introduced lifetime updates, which was a great deal to reward the loyal Platinum members. But Cakewalk didn't want to commit to doing it forever, so they put a time limit on the offer. If it had been an indefinite period of time some people some would have complained that they couldn't plan accordingly. If it had been shorter, some people would have complained they didn't have enough time to get their finances together. If it had been longer, it would have been problematic if too many people bought at the incredibly low prorated price. As August 31st drew closer Cakewalk received a lot of emails from people who couldn't afford to buy before the deadline ended, and were unhappy. Many wanted to know if there was any chance there would be a special. Cakewalk said sorry, the offer would end on August 31st. Which it did. But even though some people will always prioritize being dissatisfied no matter what a company does, Cakewalk does like to keep the majority of the customer base happy. So they created a new offer which wasn't as good a deal, but still allowed people to have lifetime updates through the holiday season. One would assume most people would think "That's cool, there's a company that's really considerate and listening to the people who couldn't afford the original Lifetime Update offer. It's fair that many (or most) of them will have to pay more. After all, they missed out on the original deal." But obviously, not all people.

I upgraded to Platinum in the beginning of 2016 too! And they wanted $199 from me too..... been a Sonar/Windows evangelist from Pro Audio 9.... I didn't bite, still considered on 8/31 during a gig of buying it anyway...... something felt wrong.....didn't do it. Wow, I guess I got lucky this time!

My annual renewal for Splat was good thru Jan 2017. I would have preferred to have had the option to wait until the end of the year to take up the offer.

MBGantt If nothing else Cake should have brought it back as a later offer instead of just extending it like this. They didn't extend the offer. It's a different offer. But suppose they brought it back in November. Think of all the people moaning and whining "I bought it in September or October. You just did that to squeeze more cash out of people. If I'd waited I could have had it for less." Not to mention adding incredible complications to the accounting end of things...what would happen to the monthly people who then upgraded during the non-LTU time, or if someone bought SONAR in October and then decided to upgrade in November, or what stores selling SONAR would do about raising and then lowering the price... It's much fairer to the customer base to say "Okay, you missed out on the great deal, but here's a pretty sweet deal as a follow-up." Cakewalk's only product is NOT renewals to SONAR Platinum. It's one source of income out of many.

Please just let this be. I don't know about the rest of you..but I enjoy being thrown a bone once in a while. I enjoy being given a good deal. im not rich. I paid the same as you did...am I upset if cakewalk would extend this offer ? not at all.

I'm pretty happy that Cakewalk extended the deal. My upgrade to lifetime was set at $199 no matter what I did ... I played the cards I was dealt and said hey I'm laying out around 15 hundred over my normal bills this month ... There was no way I could take money for set in stone financial priority's and use it just to grab a deal for August 31 st ... That is just not the way I roll ... Thank you Cakewalk for giving me a little more time to re-catch my breath .....I'm grateful Kenny

As Craig mentioned the existing sale which allowed prorated pricing for customers who had upgraded to SONAR this year has indeed ended. That was a super low price starting as low as $99 to reward annual members who had upgraded twice. Now the upgrade price starts at $199 until Dec. There may be a brief lag while the new prices got reflected on the store. This happens sometimes with Cleverbridge but it should show $199 fairly soon (if it doesn't already show that). PS: Any orders placed in that window of time where it showed the old price would obviously be honored :)

Waaayyy back in August my store price was $199. But I upgraded from X3 so the price would have been the same overall if I had upgraded 12 months ago. Still it seems I did see $149 in my account at one point last summer but cannot confirm it.

I wish cakewalk would stop emailing me about the lifetime deal. I've had emails all summer and then another today. I took the offer a while back, and it makes me feel paranoid something has gone wrong with the purchase, and I double check it still says valid until Christmas '37 They have my purchase history, the emials could be a bit more selective. When you are told stuff you don't need to again and again, it can lead to you missing something you do need to know about when it occasionally appears. At least I get emails now after years of fixing a breaking. Thanks Joey

I bought the lifetime package back in March and it's just about paid off now. I've been using Sonar day and night for that last few months doing sound checks on new mics. It's been working almost perfectly for me. I had a few glitches but I worked thru them. I've done about a zillion mic tests and have become very adapt at using Sonar now. I can pump out recordings in no time now. So I've gotten past the should I or shouldn't I get the lifetime updates. It's a done deal for me and now I can reap the benefits of free upgrades for life...sounds like a great deal to me.

I did too. Then I looked maybe two weeks later and it was 199.00. I asked about this in the store and was ignored. Glad to know someone else saw this too.

kennywtelejazz I'm pretty happy that Cakewalk extended the deal.
Kenny's post says it all! If ever there was a bloke that deserves a shot at lifetime updates, and I am sure there are plenty of other devoted Sonar users who will now have a chance to nab them. I already have lifetime updates. What I paid for them has not changed just because they extended the offer, so why would I feel any less happy with my deal? Any other reaction seems pretty selfish and petulant. To be honest, I thought from the get go it is quite possible that Cakewalk would never step away from lifetime updates - it will become the new model. Anything else could get terribly messy and be a very hard sell.
