Looking for users who had the DLL issue Please add your info

Today there is yet another thread reguarding a user getting something like this:

Sonarart.exe. Bad Image C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Sonar Artist\CWVideoEngine.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. Error Status 0x0000020."

I've read a few threads with this same error and someone did find a solution which was to have a back up copy of your Sonar folders and just replace the corupted dll with a good one. It is found the dll will show as 0 bytes.
I myself got this error and the dll was overloud. It seems dll is random.
Also this has been users of X2- X3 and now Artist so it is not a Sonar issue at all.

My suspision is that this is a W10 1703 update that has caused this so what I'm looking for is anyone who has had this issue to post and state:

*W10 version - you can view this  SETTINGS/ SYSTEM/ ABOUT ( bottom of list)   Example- 1703 or 1709
*Sonar version-  CCC. or from Help menu
*The dll that was corupted
*and detail of when the message showed.
+ Your anti Virus if any

Thanks, it would be nice to sort this out before it becomes worse.

Hey how come there are only 9 pages back on this forum,, I was trying to see how far back these threads went?

Down the bottom of the page you should find a drop down which allows you to select between a few different time spans including "From the beginning" which will show you 3518 pages.

Just in case the above gets eaten, it doesn't seem to show it on individual thread pages, but if you select a Forum group page, eg 'SONAR' it should show the option at the bottom.

I'd previously gone through those threads and made a list of which DLLs were affected. Unfortunately, I did not save that list. I think there were 5 different files, the only ones I can remember off the top of my head are ttslame.dll, ttslibsndfile.dll, cwvideoengine.dll.

I was looking for any pattern. There wasn't any that I could discern. A zero-byte file can be the result of disk corruption, but given the sudden spate of problems it would seem more likely to be the result of a file-overwrite operation that failed. That makes me suspect that some installer could be the culprit.

A couple of the files had recent datestamps (10-4-17) but the others were old files going back to 2007, so are unlikely to have been included in any recent SONAR incremental updates. (Presumably, the SONAR installers are smart enough not to overwrite existing files with the same internal version numbers.) One of them was a Microsoft file, part of the MFC collection IIRC, but the others were not and therefore unlikely to have been overwritten by a Windows update. Some other application might update MFC, but no other application would be overwriting those SONAR-specific libraries.

And that's about all I know at this time.

One thing I did not make note of was the version of Windows everybody was running who had the issue. That could be significant.

This issue is also being reported on other forums such as Unity3D. In the case of Unity the dll's affected are commonly FreeImage, ispc_texcomp, libcef, TextureConverter and OpenRL.

Originally it seemed that the issue was related to the latest W10 Creators Update (Version 1709 / Build 16299.19)  released on October 17th, but there have been error reports which precede this date. There's also reports linking the problem to Mcafee anti-virus.

Version 1709 is being rolled out gradually, so many users are yet to receive an update notification. To test it out, I manually downloaded the update to a test PC but I haven't experienced any dll errors so nothing gained.

iirc, someone was having the same dll go corrupt and were keeping a backup, to replace the corrupted file after updating - what about setting that file to "read only" before updating? might trigger some useful error message giving a clue...?

That thought occurred to me, too - make all the DLLs read-only. The obvious problem with that solution is that any future updates that legitimately need to replace one of those files would fail. A better solution is to make a backup of the \program files\cakewalk tree and the %appdata%\cakewalk tree. Which is a good idea anyway because then you've got spare parts for any eventuality.

After my past disasters, I also religiously back up all my projects and sample libraries onto an external drive.

Well last night  my W10 DAW started to download and this morning I now have version 1709.
I have brought my W7 laptop DAW to work and as I write am updating Sonar. Tonight I will copy the CCC download folder to my main DAW and update. I'll probably have to re athorize AD etc.
So we will see if I get the error this time.

I'm hoping that this was 1703 related and that people could check in and maybe that's something that we all had in common. SO we'll see if 1709 fixes it for me, I had the same error when updating Sonar in Aug and then Sept.

Yes, as a troubleshooting tool: if the DLLs were all read only, you might get lucky and catch the errant installer in the act because it threw up an error dialog. Unfortunately, this problem seems to be sporadic so you might have to wait a long time.

I'm guessing most folks who've seen it are on Windows 10, just because more of us are on W10. Cactus, didn't you say in the other thread that you got hit with it on your W10 machine but not on your W7 laptop? Could be a clue, or maybe not - there could be a great many other variables between your two computers, e.g. you probably don't have as much software installed on the laptop as on your desktop machine.

CWvideoengine.dll seems to come up a lot, but only recently. I don't recall it being mentioned before a week or so ago. cwvideoengine.dll (Cakewalk Video Engine) is one of the files with a recent datestamp (10-4-17), so it's likely to have been installed as part of a recent SONAR update.

Here's a random thought: has anyone tried to do an update while SONAR was running? I haven't ever done that (being an old-school guy I shut down everything before any install) but I'd expect the installer to raise an error when it tried to overwrite an open file. But what if it aborted mid-update and left some 0-byte files behind? Just a random thought.

Yes I think it's only windows 10 but until we hear from a few more people we won't know for sure. I update my W7 laptop first then transfer the CCC download folder to my main DAw so both are always on the same page. My W7 laptop did not throw the error. One tiny possibility is W10 is better at finding contaminated files.

Well tonight all went just fine ( other than fighting with CCC being slooooow) but Sonar this time didn't throw the error at me. I opened it a few times and played some big fat songs all is good so far.
One bummer is after I installed my Air expand pack my C drive is sitting at a dangerous 80% now. I really need to upgrade that to a 240 GB,, 120 GB  is not good. After 3 years might be time for a fresh start.

Roswell- that is real interesting and valuable info that your actually on a Pre Creators W10. That points back at what Chuck has been thinking it might be folks running Mcafee AV as far as the  CWVideoEngine.dll and the   TTSLame.dll
go. Until other check in we cannot speculate.

if it were an av app doing this, maybe there's something in that app's log/history?
also, have we looked in windows event log yet? a file write failure might be in the system log, or the security log if it fails due to a permissions issue
alsoalso, i haven't seen this issue reported in the steam forums

even more interesting.. MC7 users are experiencing this now. Just saw this post this AM

another interesting tid-bit I think is that after I roll back and do a reinstall it will load for three or four times then the error will come up later.

McAfee AV certainly seems to be a common factor for users on the Unity forum. The following information comes directly from McAfee...

Files become 0 kilobyte and locked when VirusScan Enterprise / Double-Take software
As of VSE 8.8  Patch 1 and VSE 8.7i Patch 5, the VSE kernel level drivers have adopted the Microsoft Filter Manager minifilter driver model to improve supportability and compatibility with Windows and Windows applications. Double-Take software uses drivers to monitor for changes to all protected files to see what bytes have changed. When VSE is present with these Double-Take drivers it can lead to the 0 kb locked files.

Possibly coincidental, but disabling McAfee and reinstalling Cakewalk could be worth a try.

You don't need to completely disable your antivirus software. Just exempt the \program files\cakewalk tree from scans.

True, but as Windows 10 Defender will automatically start if no other AV is active there's no risk. Either way it would be good to track down the source of the '0 byte' error before I (and others) commit to installing the latest updates for Sonar Platinum and Unity. DLL meltdown seems a distinct possibly.

For me the latest version of Sonar is stable. This was the first update that didn't give me an error. It was 08 and 09 that showed " overloud.dll bla bla bla on the end of the update.   My Error seems to be different and might not have been the same issues as others,, just a coincidence.
Still be nice if a few more check in. Guess they are not regular visitors and possibly only when they have a problem.

And I don't think you need to re install Sonar, just overwrite the dll

I've been keeping current since rolling updates were instituted, and have never seen this problem. Nor, I believe, have the majority of users. That's why I'm reluctant to move CW installers to the top of the suspect list. Which is not to say they're not still in the lineup.

McAffee seems to be the prime suspect at this point. When rounding up suspects, you always start with those that have a sketchy record.

It does seems very likely, I've just found these posts...

'I have the same problem. It is affecting two applications: Memory-Map Navigator 6 and Miktex. I have Mcafee but not malwarebytes. It seems clear that Mcafee is silently destroying DLLs when they run'.

www.tenforums.com (McAfee AV Software)
'Last week I got "Bad Image" errors with Adobe Lightroom, the program had worked OK previously. Two .dll files were listed as corrupt and in Explorer both were shown has having 0 bytes size. Re-installation resolved the problem. Today I have had the same "bad image" error with Techsmith SnagIt'.
