I'm sure PH meant monkey as opposed to organ grinder....I don't think he was likening Brandon to a primitive primate....

Exactly.
But I couldn't be bothered explaining so offered the apology.

"Get over yourselves you sad Americans."

Hey Twig,

I'm an Irish-Scot.... you know what that means.... my childrens' childrens' children are going to hold a grudge against you for that sad ass remark.

PH68, Thank you for toning it down and focusing what I believe is a legitimate complaint against Cakewalk, the company, rather than some person trying their best to serve as a representative.

I admire that you have responded in a positive manner.

very best,
mike

PS twig, I also have one of those Irish sense's of humour... after the brawl you have obligated me too... I'd like to buy you a pint so we can tell jokes and sing songs together. Yes? No? Maybe?

@Twigman: Thanks for the VAT-links.
Sh!t ... unbelievable price tags!. My internet connection had some problems and for a moment I thought Cakewalk is really shamed about those prices and not showing pages, lol...

Oh, lordy. Because its extra. The answer is right there in your question. Something tells me this is a weak rhetorical question rather than a serious one.

You said the medium of delivery is irrelevant, not me.

The medium of delivery is irrelvant to the issue that affects the price, which is distribution agreements.

Thanks for chiming in Brandon. "Distribution agreements", just still sounds like some piece of dogma that justifies a price that doesn't need to be described or explained to the layman but simply taken on faith. Let's wait and see what Santa brings... :)

BTW - Guinness is for going into sausages, pies and "smooth black russians". Not [for my own] general consumption.

I'll never forget the day after St Patrick's day a few years back.

Oh, I'm all for the real ales, Deauchars IPA being the top of the list. Ossian, Schiehallion, Bitter & Twisted coming close in the runnings.

I'm not American. ;) And no-one's more dismayed to see Millars, Budweiser, etc. filling up our pubs thank you very much!

Guinnes 'tastes' great. Unfortunately, stout just has this curious... 'loosening' effect on my otherwise iron constitution...

Over here in the States the Guinness we get is now brewed up in Canada by the same people who make Busch lite. ;-)

It's not the good stuff you all get to enjoy.

Plus it's $9.00/six regardless of the exchange rate... something to do with distribution deals. :-)

Luckily small batch Porters (I think most beer experts recognize Guinness as a Porter rather than a Stout) have become quite popular here.

My current favorite is Highlands Brewery Oatmeal Porter from the hills of Asheville North Carolina.

They are making some fantastic fresh tasting Porters in Colorado and Utah... but they are too fragile to make it to Florida in good condition.

My new policy is drink local Porter... it's good for you!!!

all the best,
mike

I have a brother in North Carolina, I shall see if he'll send a bottle for Christmas! :) (edit - or a boxed X1 upgrade! )

BTW, Americans do make some great beers, it's just we don't tend to get them much over here.

It can get confusing, there are a lot of fancy packages of horrible stuff that appear to be good beer sitting right next to the real stuff.

I scratch my head sometimes when a new "flavor" becomes popular because it has great graphics on the label and I know that it was brewed on the same line as the all you can drink discount stuff.

I think it's easy to to taste the quality on the first 2 sips... luckily we do have some beers that are very enjoyable.

I stumbled on "Totally Naked" up in Wisconsin this summer. It was a light lager beer that was so clean and fresh it made my mouth water. It's brewed by a small company operated by a husband and wife.

http://www.newglarusbrewi..com/beers.cfm?BeerID=13

I don't enjoy a alcohol buzz... but I love a great beer... I'm told that with my genetic background a good beer qualifies as food so I enjoy just enough to whet my appetite. :-)

best regards,
mike

mike: No need to step out (or apologise)! It's a heated topic, but it's looping now. I think the point has been made sufficiently, or at least, Cakewalk are aware of it.

At the end of the day, the sales figures will decide whether the UK gets a good deal, and most people will probably pay it.

I can hold on till the inevitables discount email from Cakewalk that usually happens about 8 or 9 months down the line anyway... :D

Re:Looks great, but the announced pricing surely is a misprint? 2010/11/20 09:57:03 (permalink)
I feel Brandon has stated the points very clearly. However, I would like to add a few things.

First the "Heavy" part of my post.
If you want to vote with your Dollars, Euros and Pounds that is certainly your right. However, this is a SONAR X1 forum and if this thread continues to spiral it will be locked. Please don't force our hand as we really try to be extremely tolerant of things.

What will not be tolerated is attacks on our customers or Cakewalk employees. Everyone gets a warning and then we have to act. The same is true for effectively "spamming" threads and/or bumping threads. Please see the TOS for clarity.  I have stated this in other threads but I am sure you would not appreciate having the same things done to you. Please think before you type. This is especially true for posts directed towards other forum members. So please stay on topic or the thread will be locked. Start a new thread and go back at it and you are banned.

Now some info that is actually on topic unlike many of the posts

VAT registration - Yes we are VAT registered, yes we will be posting the VAT number soon. Do we have to? No.   Finally, yes we write HUGE VAT checks to HMRC and other tax branches within the EU. If you want to debate this you can, but not in the SONAR X1 forum.

Will Cakewalk employees give you details on distribution contracts, inner Cakewalk business workings etc? No, we do not share confidential and business sensitive information. Again, this is not something we will allow a debate on.

So just like speculating on new features or product rumors, commenting on or making statements based on assumptions of our business and it's inner workings can lead to confusion and frustration. I think most of the folks here know how Cakewalk and it's staff conduct business and we normally get things right. If we make a mistake or can fix something we do. Are we perfect? No, but we do our best to get things right. Some of the folks on this thread know this from personal experience which is honestly one of the most troubling parts of this thread.

Now some really useful and really on topic information

 - Let's say, for example, you live in the UK and you want to upgrade from SONAR 8.5 Producer to SONAR X1 Producer. You have choices:
  • Purchase the download from Cakewalk for £89. If you want the box, disks and manual it's an extra charge as it was in the past. Pricing is not final yet but it would be around £24.99
  • Walk into your local stockist and purchase the full boxed upgrade with disks and manual for £89 (save approx £25, plus shipping). If you choose this options, you are saving money and supporting a local retailer in your area.
  • Choose to order an upgrade from many retailers worldwide that have no problem shipping outside of the country. You can choose to privately import the product, pay the import VAT and duties, and please remember that local support (dealer and distributor) will be difficult at best as you bought outside of their territory.
Finally, please keep it civil and treat others as you would expect to be treated, I absolutely hate having to jump into threads and drop the "smack down".

Where did this happen?

Anyway, I want nothing less than to see Cakewalk and SONAR succeed, I think they have a great product and deserve to do so.

Perhaps at some point in the future you may look to how your business model is working for you and whether one or two boxed copies in local shops is the best way of breaking the Euro market.

As I say, here's to X1, Merry Christmas and farewell.

I won't pretend that I know the first thing about the tax rules and regulations in the USA but I can most definitely say that that statement is incorrect in the UK. Here, you are obliged to provide VAT details on request if you are VAT registered.

We're obviously not going to get an explanation for the pricing difference, I still think it's the special relationship. so I'm undecided about where I'll go from here.

It's only £25 but more the principle for me, I have been known to cut my nose off to spite my face, ask my ex-wives .......... having said that I saw a beta version of X1 demoed for me today in PMT Norwich and was pretty impressed. Now if I can only convince the present Mrs FastBikerBoy that I really, really need a new computer...........

This thread contains instances of: a cakewalk employee being called a "monkey", Cakewalk in general being explicitly accused of fraud, and some downright deranged stuff earlier on accusing them of facism, of all things.

I couldn't care less one way or the other about this price differential thing, but I've been slack-jawed in amazement at the way some people have behaved here. Certainly, the size of my block list has shot up since this thread began.

Do you work for these guys or are you a UK distributor by any chance?
No, he's just John the apologist. It is his sole mission in life to defend Cakewalk from any criticism.

(Little does he realise that he is the single greatest cause for all these discussions dragging on for so long... Or maybe he is being paid by the competition to undermine Cakewalk? Who knows...)

It's not only Cakewalk/Roland that's ripping off Europeans, I just checked Cubase and at Guitar Center it's 550 USD which is 344 GBP at todays rate.

But if you visit Digital Village it's 440 GBP or 703 USD, so Steinberg/Yamaha seems to be doing it too.

I've checked other products though and Toontrack Superior Drummer is cheaper at Digital Village, Gibson guitars are about the same at GC and DV.

Most of my comments have been as much flippant and humourous as they have real serious annoyance but the way that this whole issue is being poo-pooed by some, notably those that aren't being shafted for an extra $43 ( at today's exchange rate) is starting to wind me up more than the pricing is.

A lot of the Cakewalk apologists don't realise that while they are not only being rude by interfering in things that do not concern them they are also making the issue worst. Again and again.

Robin, If I may address you directly, the primary reason many of us use this forum to communicate to Cakewalk is that Cakewalk has a well deserved reputation for not responding to private communications.

Furthermore there is no official address published where we can register complaints. I for one would like to think there was some office or individual whom I could communicate reasonably with... but this forum is all there is.

Thank you for your patience with me.

very best regards,
mike
