Didn't they cover some of Vivaldi's work?  The Four Seasonings?

I've been listening to quite a bit of Simon and Garfunkel lately. In fact, I've started working on a cover of Scarborough Fair/Canticle. I hope I didn't just embarrass myself.

Scarborough Fair is one of the few songs I remember from my days of studying classical guitar. As a matter of fact, I played it for the first time in ages earlier this week, on the semi-hollow (I don't own any acoustic at the moment).

Being plugged into the POD HD and playing through a surf type of patch, I ended up "enhancing" certain parts with the Bigsby and, eventually, mashing the whole thing with Del Shannon's Runaway. Fun times. :P

I keep coming back to this Aphex Twin tune off his recent Syro album, which I'd overlooked until now. It appeals to my love of fat analog synth bass, creamy pads, crunchy beats, jazzy chords and that dark, uneasy atmosphere which Richard James has off to a tee.

Recently I came across these dudes, Brandt Brauer Frick, a Berlin based trio who play techno-inspired grooves but with real instruments and a nicely skewed sense of harmony. Well worth a listen to.

I've been hearing this one a lot played in Starbucks and it grew on me, turns out it's the Unknown Mortal Orchestra. I have no idea if it's in the charts or not because I don't follow that sort of thing. Anyway it's a nice tune with a crunchy production and I like it.

I looked into the band on Spotify and was pleasantly surprised, some of their stuff has a lo-fi late 60's feel, almost like The Mothers....

Have you heard the original? By which I mean the version which Martin Carthy originally recorded, ripped off by Paul Simon not long afterwards? I don't think the two have spoken since....anyway I used to prefer the S&G version but eventually came round to liking the original better. It has a very no-frills, honest, folk beauty to it. Martin Carthy is definitely one of the best acoustic guitarists of the last 50 years, well worth checking out.

EDIT: I was unaware, but the two patched up their differences some years ago.

Yeah, I've heard his version. I like it too. Apparently Paul paid restitution years later, but Martin's agent (I think) ran off with it, and Martin never got a dime.

That's interesting, LF.  I've had a back-burner Scarborough Fair cover project going for a couple of years.  Please don't post yours until I've at least committed to the overall style of mine!!

I'll at least give you plenty of warning! Actually, I was going to attempt a fairly authentic cover of it, but I don't know if I have the patience to replicate the harpsichord part.

No problem then.  Mine is more of a heavy tribute than an authentic cover.  We're safe

My dad's friend's son started losing his hair in his early 20's, around 1996. He was completely bald soon afterwards. To this day he still blames The Spice Girls.

This whole thread has been very enlightening.

I love all those links.  Thanks for exposing me to new sounds I would have never heard before.  You folks are a diverse group.

My playlist is eclectic too.  When I’m at work I try to listen to the local community radio station. There are some great shows that have broadened my horizons.  They even do polka and big band.

When I’m alone in the car, or listening to my mp3 voice recorder, at least 60%of the time, I listen to my own recorded music.  I have hours and hours of recordings.  I suppose that is vain, but I always listen for clues on what to do different.

If my GF is with me I listen to albums that we both like.  I play my music for her too, but she’s picky, so she lets me know when she doesn’t like one of my pieces.  I guess we have a solid relationship.

The other 35% of the time I am playing guitar or practicing my Sonar workflow.

That folks, is my musical day 5 to 4 times a week unless something interferes.

Thanks again for all the links.
Jesse

Count your Blessings Jesse.....you're very lucky to have so much time to spend on music stuff. I wish I had that kind of time, but I have other priorities that come first (4 children) and my musical needs are secondary to them. Enjoy while you can....

Speaking of guitars and somewhat Big Band, this is what I'm listening to now:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hhJ-4bQ-tY ......I love Big Band stuff!!!

If you like DLR and some bluesy/rock stuff, this is a pretty good album with tons of talented people working with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xd4DO7jJayQ

@Mesh,

For me, the biggest take away from this thread  is your comment  "count your blessings"  With all the great blessings I have, I often times forget to count them.  I seem to spend more time counting my curses, what few I have anyways.

I'll bet your four children are pretty awesome just like you.

Thanks for the reminder (cvb).

Thanks for the kind words Jesse......I'm not sure about being awesome, but my children certainly are Blessings and I can count all of them them on 1 hand.....lol....(BTW,  our fifth one is due next Feb (a baby boy!!).....woot woot!!). It definitely has helped (a lot) to look at life positively rather than negatively.........a lot more good things get done this way.

Anyway, welcome to the forums and would love to hear some of your music.....you can post it in the songs forum and there's a lot of talented people in there who can help with song related material (if needed).
