I don't know about that, Bapu. I've watched a lot of movies. Everything "Foreign" either sounds like Speedy Gonzalez, Jackie Chan, Boris and Natasha, or John Cleese. I'm reasonably certain that all of these accents are, in fact, British. I'm not 100% sure of that last one, but I'm pretty close. I'm not held back by facts, geography, or history, so don't try to confuse the issue. I know. It seems one sided. They've given us such rich, funny accents with their regional differences such as "Scotland, the East End, Australia, India... It's okay, we gave them the Southern Drawl. I think that makes us even. Ya'll are welcome.

Thank you kindly, good sir. May I be so bold as to ask a second question? Why is British dish called "Spotted Dick"? This recipe originally came from the contents of a genitally-applied poultice once used to soothe the effects of gonarea gohnorhea goneerere VD. The light sponge proved to be an ideal shock absorber and protective layer (in the days before Bubble-wrapTM) for the affected area and the ripe and juicy currants provided a much needed source of Vitamin C to help speed up the recovery. The practice was finally outlawed in British hospitals after a used poultice was accidentally dropped into a batch of banana-custard and subsequently eaten by every patient on the ward. One of the unfortunate patients who consumed the contaminated batch was none other than Heinz's head of product development Mr Richard Ed Spot. So delighted was he with the deliciousness of the dish he managed to smuggle a small sample to his wife, who was told to keep it refrigerated until he returned to work and was able to analyse it properly. "The taste of those first few mouthfuls in hospital was incredible" Mr Spot said later, although he admitted that "The juicy currants and sponge were very tasty immersed in custard, although the dry crunchy pieces in each mouthful left a rather nasty taste in the mouth. Thank you for that Mr. Strummer. Your knowledge and cleverness is exceeded only by your sense of humour.

There was a question asked in the novel Catch 22 that wasn't answered. I've been wondering what the answer is since 1974. Every time I'm at a job that has 'meetings' and the speaker asks at the end "are there any questions?" I ask. I usually get a blank stare or angry glare. Will the answer destroy the universe? Will the angels descend and carry us all to <wherever>? Will Bapu become funny? So please, Mr. Sir Strumagnificent, can you tell me, Why is France?

Mesh Why are things sent by ship called cargo and things sent by car called shipment? Now this is an easy one. Why are things sent by ship called cargo... Imagine a large consignment of goods ready to be delivered. There is a ship available and a car available to carry it to its destination. The bod in charge of dispatch will assess the pros and cons of which mode of transport is best. If he deems the load to be too large for the car he will direct the stevedore to move it into the hull of the ship. He will then turn to the driver of the automobile and say "Car, you can go" - over time this has been shortened simply to " Car go". ... and things sent by car called shipment? Imagine a similar situation to that outlined above. However, the transport manager in this example is on his lunch break. The ship's captain and the car driver are pushed for time so they agree to decide how the load will be transported between them. They decide that the car will take the load. However, due to the large size and weight of the load, the car is difficult to control and skids off the edge of the dock into the water. At this point, the transport manager returns and castigates the ship's captain and the car driver (once he swims ashore) - "You pair of pillocks - that load was meant to go on the ship". Over the years, this phrase was shortened first to 'meant ship', then to 'ship meant', and finally shortened further to " ship ment".
