ORIGINAL: ProjectM

BTW I purchased a new keyboard yesterday. A Logitech S510 I think it's called. I killed the other one at a gig friday night. If the Optimus was Beer and abuse proof I'd love to have that. It's illuminated and really cool and has slightly larger keys so they are easier to hit I suppose;)

Marius

How many keyboards to you go through every year???

At least one, but closer to two. When they became wireless, then cheap (and I was making money) and then when they became a cruical part of my music life and then when I started to take them onstage every once in a while, I kind of stoped caring for them and I keep messing them up badly

I'm actually a bass player and you can use some muscles when playing a bass live. Pushing buttons isn't exactly the same and I always need to let out some energy live he he. So instead of killing my MIDI controllers I try to aim the abuse to the easily replaceable keyboard. It's cheaper and I don't have to program it all over again. In the studio, sometimes frustration takes over after "yet another BSOD" or missing plug or an idiot of a guitarplayer or whatever, the keyboard gets a bit of bashing. Not to mention the late night sessions where beer, port and a nutcase of a singer involved. It's always the keyboard that stand against the riot, man...

But I could always get the Optimus in the studio, find my self a soft ball or something to throw around and keep using cheap logitechs live

He he, I've always wondered if those are for real or not.

No, I'm not like that, I just get a little over enthusiastic. Not that extreme, tho. And not angry he he.

Ha! That's funny. I've never done that to any of my equipment. I don't like to buy more things if I don't have to...

What about this little beauty then?

Here's what it can do - pretty impressive I'd say for those of us without much room and just needing a basic MIDI controller.

And you just have to check out this guy doing his John Bonham solo with it [click on the image]

To be a little serious, I think it's really annoying to watch electronic musicians just stand there "reading e-mail" or tinker about by them selves unless they have some live musicians or whatever. So in my two piece electronic outfit we need to show off a little and such things happen. And when I guest with others, I have to put on a bit of a show to make sure they invite me back ha ha. And it feels good to let out some evergy too. So i dunno if it's art. Entertainment maybe?

Tose prodikeys look like a smart little tool. I think the keys ar a little small for serious playing but it's definitely a cool idea! but I am happy to have room for my Axioms;)

Okay, cool... I'm kinda thinking it's only good for quickly entering notes but it probably doesn't have MIDI velocity support and definitely not MIDI aftertouch...

My view is simple get a keyboard to do keyboard stuff and then get a keyboard to do keyboard stuff. Or you can get the one before the other if you like.

Do you have similar advice concerning monitors then John?

He he - it's easy to remember which is which though, generally speaking keyboards go on the desktop and monitors sit on the raised platform above

Although your desktop can be on one of your monitors too

Arrrgghh!! stop it sir, this is getting too complicated right now!!
But bloody well written, I might use that line in a fancy dress party some day.

Scott, I don't tink it has Aftertouch, but it does have, as quoted from the product site: 37 mini-sized music keys with touch-sensitivity . Not bad actually. Luckily, I don't need to buy it to check it out. I worked with an actor today who have one. He wanted me to help him set it up on his living room PC, I'll let you know what I think of it when I get around to help him out.

Robby I am surprised that you are just now responding. You are usually quicker on the draw.

This thread has been a real fun thing for me. I am really surprised how many and the quality of the people that have posted. I expected 1 or 2 hits at best.

It doesn't matter what keyboard one gets but I believe that a lighted one is very helpful what ever the brand. I like the Saitek Cyborg because it is meant for hard use and has the right kind of lighting. Others are just as good though. Just make sure that they have the lettering lit. Having the keyboard light up with transparent keys wont work. I know I tried. LOL

Well, who wouldn't want a lighted keyboard? Even if you didn't really need it, they're just too much fun to pass up!

Finally got the replacement from NewEgg. Works great, looks, uh, great, yeah, great. That's the ticket...

Actually, it does look cool, particularly with the lights out. My only lingering regret is that NewEgg charged me for shipping the damaged one back to them. But, you pay your money, you take your chances...

Thanks for pointing this out John, it's a welcome addition to the studio

I tried the prodikeys this weekend, I set up a rig at my friends house and he'd purchased one of those to use. He has very little space and it fit on his desk rather nicely. The keyboard was pretty good to write with and it had slightly more space between the keys which is great sometimes.

However, the MIDI keyboard part was ok at best for playing. The keys gets to small for my liking (and to his) but they had a surprisingly good feel eventhough they were a little toy-ish. I would only recomend it to people who just need something for MIDI input and have next to no room for a setup. Even the cheapest of all MIDI keyboards are better for playing and long time work. I don't see how it could be better, tho. For what it is it's pretty cool but as a serious keyboard, not so much.

Hi Marius,

Thanks for checking that out and letting us know what you found. I figured it wouldn't work that well. Those mini keyboards might be good for quick note entering, but for real-time MIDI recording, not so much.

Logitech is coming out with a new one... should be out next month...

Logitech Illuminated Keyboard

The Logitech Illuminated Keyboard makes typing easy – even in the dark. To optimize existing backlight technology, Logitech combined microlens reflectors, a multilayer painting process and laser etching – creating a backlight experience that is brighter, sharper and easier to read. Whether you're typing an e-mail or chatting with a friend, the adjustable backlight gives you just the right amount of light.

With its transparent frame, the ultra-thin Illuminated Keyboard (.37 inches or 9.3 mm from base to frame) adds an elegant touch to any desk. Balancing form and function, the keyboard offers a full-size key layout (including a number pad), soft-touch palm rest and a full row of F-keys, as well as media- and volume-control keys for instant command of your entertainment.
