A suitable keyboard controller is gonna be another few months (at least) of research. I can't afford anything right now so I'll take my time on that one. As far as V-Drum stuff... I meant the actual hardware. It seems to be the best on the market as far as realism (both for playing and MIDI reproduction). That stuff is DEFINITELY gonna have to wait though. The set up I'd like is gonna be at least a grand or so. I'll probably build it in pieces. Start with the nice kick, snare, ride and high hat modules and add onto it. We'll see.

I wouldn't worry Beepster. They know its a very few that seem not to get it.

After reading Heather's the pic post where I nearly fell out of my chair with laughter then I read her second one above. Which also was too funny. With her posts I don't think we have anything to worry about. heck, I think between you and heather CW is probably ROTFL!!!! I think they are having a ball reading this thread.

You got that right!!

I also forgot.

@cclarry - I guess I'm going the Octa-Capture route. May just pick up a Quad-Capture for now though, as I am not into recording ensembles just yet. Quad-Capture is the 2in/2out w/ Midi In/Out correct? The step up from the UA-EX25? I'm sliding over to the Roland website right now... Thanks cheers.

All I have to say is you CAN NOT go wrong with M-Audio products. They pretty much have built one of the four corners of digital music production. The Axiom pro series is a little pricey, but it would all depend on what you are using it for. Are you in Canada? I remember in a post somewhere on here you mentioned pricing in you're country excluding europe, So I just assumed Canada.

IDK, man. I'm no expert as far as keyboards and stuff but I find M-Audio to be kind of a middle of the road solution in many cases. Really they were quality budget gear back in the day (and still are to an extent) but... yeah... IDK I think they have over extended themselves and gotten a little too big for their britches and "Jack of all Tradesy". Nothing wrong with that and there are M-Audio devices I'm looking into but I just think Roland or other companies are probably better at this kind of thing. They've been in the keyboard racket FAR longer and they build their instruments like tanks. I want to be able to punch the crap out of my keyboard and not worry about breaking something. That goes triple for e-drum stuff. Yanno? I'm kind of a spazz when I get going.

And this has actually got my mind worked back around to a rather large and reputable audio company that seem to want to screw me and the general public over with a known defective product. I'm still waiting for the final word as to what's gonna happen so I won't publicly slag them just yet but they are certainly taking their sweet time in responding. So far it doesn't sound like they give a crud. Not cool, man. Not cool.

June appears to be a big promotion month for them. Just saw the one for Essential to Studio for FREE and the FREE Producer with a Jupitor-80. All of these promotions including the First Class Upgrade to Production Suite for first time X1 Producer customers are a great way to entice those customers because customers love the word FREE. They're also great promotions, so anyone on the fence or hesitating - should break out their wallet when you're getting a lot of software for FREE. Now for us early bird adopters, loyal customers who bought into X1 (when it wasn't working properly), Expanded, its Modules, Z3ta 2.0 and without a Production Suite upgrade path from Producer - we'll have to take Andrew for his word. Like cclarry, I'm not expecting and wanting anything for FREE. I just wish Cakewalk was more honest when it came to that Production Suite which Andrew even dubbed, "the next version." If it were made available to us Producer customers, we would have saved a bundle from the very beginning. But they, the corporate machine that they are, decided to sell each individual piece of that "next version" as a separate a la carte to unsuspecting customers who bought in - without knowing that they are being mislead and cheated out of a better package deal which would be available after they had already sold so many copies individually, or bundled in different packages to hit their sales quota. This is what some of you aren't seeing and Cakewalk will continue to do this over and over and over again. It's not about getting things FREE, it's about us wanting them to be honest and fair towards us when it comes to things like the Production Suite. Surely enough, they can try and patch things up - give us some more deals to make up for their decision that effected our wallets. Because we're not expecting anything FREE from them. We paid top dollar and aren't asking for FREE stuff similar to those promotions. We're just very unhappy that we were conned, deceived, mislead and cheated. Maybe some of us should put our heads together and file a Class Action Lawsuit against Cakewalk.

Hyperbolize much?

On what grounds?  "Your honor, we, the unhappily conned, deceived, misled and cheated Cakewalk customers, demand compensation for emotional distress caused by paying full price for a quality product and only getting EXACTLY WHAT WE PAID FOR!"

Good luck with that.   :-D

I have to agree, M-Audio isn't the "best" by a long shot.  BUT...it's inexpensive and gets the job done.  Some M-Audio gear is still great.  I used the Delta 66 audio interface for years and it's still awesome.  I was tempted to put it in my current system, too, but really don't need it with the VS-700.  Their Oxygen line of keyboard controllers are "okay".  I have two.  What I like about them is they're USB and have plenty of assignable MIDI controls.  But the keyboard action is pretty cheap.  Better than a Casio, I'll grant you, but I'd be embarrassed to have a real keyboard player sit down at one.  They work for me, and I do like them, but I wouldn't call them "great" by any measure.

The Axiom series seems pretty solid, but I've never owned one so I can't say much about them.  I think if  I were shopping for a quality controller, however, I'd probably skip over them and look at the Rolands, Yamahas and Korgs (budget allowing, of course).

I LOVE Roland gear, BTW.  I have a lot of Roland gear and it's all rock solid.  V-Studio gear, amps, mixers, monitors, synths, multi-trackers...all the best.  Love love love.  :-)

@Heather... Exactly. Having something to input notes is one thing. Having something to actually "perform" on is another altogether. I'm confident Roland would kick some serious M-Audio butt in that regards. Watching Brandon go nuts in that webinar was kind of crazy. So much expression. That is obviously an extremely nice keyboard though and way out of my price range. However I'm sure there is a less expensive Roland solution for a droog like me. I may however have to settle for a small scale M-Audio in the meantime... just to input notes. I could also yank out my DX-7 and use it as a controller but that seems like a huge hassle to figure out (old school MIDI ins/outs) and the thing weighs a TON. Also the keys don't really have the greatest feel. Meh... sucks to be broke. Cheers.

Re:Producer -> Production Suite For free? 2012/06/08 02:33:47 (permalink)
The word "Loyal" when referring to software always makes me laugh. I was labelled a fanboi 'cos X1 has always worked really well for me and I said so but "Loyal" is something I'm not. Loyal to me means sticking with it come what may, which when it comes to getting work done is closer to insanity IMHO.

If Sonar didn't work for me I'd be using something else as many others do. I'm sure CW are aware of that so why should they toss free software at me? Besides which there's free software out there if I want it, just it doesn't do what I want it to so I'm willing to pay for what does, always have been, and not just in the audio software world.

I've been a (mostly) happy user of Sonar since V2 and upgrade when I want, sometimes that's as an early adopter, sometimes it's when there's a great deal later in the product cycle, and sometimes I haven't bothered and skip a version or two.

Personally I got X1 as a freebie for buying 8.5 in it's later days. They could have charged me double and I'd have been happy with the result. X1 has worked for me from the off and even the early much moaned about bugs had easy work rounds. The benefits far out weighed the drawbacks and the workflow speed increase from no longer being constrained by the software is huge, although I didn't know I was being constrained in earlier versions else I might have jumped ship to something else then.

The improvements more than justify any extra I've paid compared to late comers. Yes they've paid less but I've been enjoying myself at the party for longer and that to me is worth it. YMMV of course.

I know exactly how you feel brother. I do that everyday in my downtime when I'm letting the ol' ear fatigue wear off. Sip a coffee and browse the site of my favourite gear store. I guess that's why the Axiom 49 MkII has done well for me. After I mapped it, I no longer needed it mapped because I picked up the BCF2000 (I'm a huge fan of cheaper equipment, It may take a full day to map it correctly and getting it the way you want it, but that's the fun part).

I use the controls on my AXIOM to tweak EQ and Compression, as well as Soft Synth settings while playing. And even that I just recently got into in an attempt to broaden my horizons. That and my wife thinks the studio would make more $$$ which I just spend on the gear I'm drooling over on the websites.

Looking into MASCHINE Mikro, anyone out there use one? Anyone?

Hi there, SEVerstraten. I am not a keyboard player so if you mean for gigging I would not be able to make any real recommendations. But if you mean something you can just toss into a backpack or a suit case definitely check out some M-Audio small scale controllers. They don't cost much (so if you break it it is not a huge deal), they work well and they usually come with a lite version of Pro Tools that will work on most half decent computers. If you want to try something REALLY small and cool check out the Korg Nano series... http://www.korg.com/nanoseries2 I stumbled across those when I was trying to find a decent MPC controller to tap beats out on (I ended up buying a Korg padKontrol). They're obviously a little on the chincy side but they are pretty inexpensive and supposedly work surprisingly well for their size. You can fit one of those right into your laptop bag or a briefcase. Cheers.

We try to be fair to all our existing customers. In 2012, we have offered many special deals including the $10 for 10 days (which was meant to be fair to everyone who had purchased). We also recently did a spring sale for 30% off select products, the Advanced Workshop Giveaway, the 26.2% global sale, just to name a few. In addition, we try to maintain very fair upgrade prices and reward customers who spend a lot of money. We have also made a big effort in making new videos and resources available (like CakeTV, the Welcome Kit). We value your business and are always thinking of ways to reward loyal customers. At the same time, we are a business and can't be giving away everything for free. I hope you all can appreciate how much time and effort is spent in trying to make our customers happy. That's not only applies to sales but products as well. We listen to customer feedback and are probably one of the only companies that actually addresses customers on their public forums and tries to help out customers having issues (when possible).

Unless of course they live outside of USA in which case we will charge them more for the same thing.

You forgot that bit ;)

if i was to buy a product from another country i would exspect to pay for an imported item.
wouldnt you?

i mean i just bought some german equipment,do you think i paid what the folks in germany paid?
i would think not.
what about the import taxes and other import charges, yes even for electronic downloads.
their fee's set up by your goverment and mine.

sure they will wave that, then your paying less for sonarthen i am,how fair is that?

Physical stuff I have no issue with - of course I expect to pay for shipping something halfway round the world. A download is a download - other companies manage it perfectly well and let non US customers pay the $ price.
We have to charge VAT on all products sold into Europe. That's the main reason for the price difference in Europe.

Erm...... Sonar First Class Upgrade  $99 or £89.

$99 = £64.  VAT @20% = £12.80   which makes £76.80 total.

So even allowing for VAT the UK price for still has almost 20% added on top of the US price.

BTW you are correct in that your invoices do state that prices include VAT. What is missing form the invoice is your VAT registration number, a legal requirement if you are VAT registered.

FWIW, I'm not just here just to bash CW.  Sonar is great IMHO and I still think it's a pretty good price for what you are getting, but the price sends the wrong message to non-US customers. I'll be sticking with 8.5PE for now because of this and the console view in X1 - yeeeuwww ! Shame as the pro-channel and new media browser are big advances, but the CV is just not doing it for me. Please bring back the custom colours function.

That price of SONAR X1 was set back in 2010 when we released. We can't control currency flucuations, and we do have to pick a set price. However, we do try and adjust when new products come out. For example, the PC2A T-Type Leveling Amplifier is $79 USD. The price with VAT converted in US dollars would be $95. Right now the price is £59, which is $92. For Euros, the price is 69 Euros, which is $86. So it's actually a little less. You will see with new products released this year and last year, the prices are very comparable. Next year, it could be totally different and maybe we'll have this conversation again :)

Thank you for continuing to respond. As I said, I'm not here to just to bash you, but this issue does keep getting swept under the carpet year after year, so I'm making the most of it while someone is talking about it.  The $99 / £89 price is "special offer" price from an email  that Cakewalk sent me a few days ago, not from 2010. Fluctuations in currency exchange rates would not be an issue for you if you allowed all customers to pay in $ as other US based companies do. The currency conversion is then  handled at the prevailing market rate by the credit card company, so you still your full price in $ and we would get a better and more transparent deal than a 20% mark up in case the rates go against you at some point.

In many ways Cakewalk comes across as a very open an accesible company, more so than I have ever experienced, which is to your immense credit. You do so many things so well and better than so many. It's a great product and I'm sure it will only get better. It's just a shame that you let yourselves down with this pricing issue when it's so easily solvable if there truly isn't another hidden agenda to make a few more $ out of non US customers.

$99 / £89 price is "special offer" price from an

The special offer is the upgrade to the next version, not the pricing. You are buying all versions of SONAR X1 at their current price that was set when we launched and getting bumped up to the next version.

Ok, thanks for clarifying that. Seems like there's still a few lumps under the rug though....I'll just check................well, would you look at that someone's only gone and swept the lack of VAT registration number on invoices and how you could easily just charge us in $ to save you having to worry about exchange rates under there again ! ;)

If you want to try something REALLY small and cool check out the Korg Nano series...

I just picked up the Korg NanoPAD2 for tapping out drums, timpani and that sort of thing.  It's cool and does what I need, but I've noticed the centers of the pads aren't very responsive.  The edges work fine, so it's still perfectly usable, but I found that surprising and counter-intuitive.  I'm not sure if the NanoKEY2 would suffer from a similar issue or not, but for the size (and price) it could be perfect for travel.

For small controller keyboards, I've used my Oxygen 8 for years (25 keys).  I have to say, it's not very well-constructed.  I've had to take it apart and fiddle with the potentiometers a bit, as their values had a tendency to jump around for no apparent reason.  I'm pretty sure I just got a lemon, though (it happens) and the newer models look a lot better.

If I replace my Oxygen, however, I'm looking at the Akai Professional MPK Mini.  It's in the same price range and similar features, but includes a bank of 8 pads.  What it doesn't have, however, is pitch bend and mod wheels...which might be sort of a deal breaker.  Otherwise, it looks great.

Finally, if you have an iPad or similar device, you could always go with a "virtual" keyboard app.  Some of them are quite usable and, while no substitute for the real thing, might do in a pinch.

So many options to go by. It won't be the Korg MicroKey25 since that is only available in August, and my new job starts July 1st. I'm looking for something with 25 keys and a bend and mod-wheel (or joystick). So the AKAI is a no-go then.

Too bad Roland/Cake doesn't have a really compact version of the A-PRO series.

All I said was this is going to make for some unhappy LOYAL owners....not that they'll quit using...they just don't think it's right that a company gives away Freebies...i.e. Video Bundle, Production Suite to NEW Customers, and those of us who bought in early didn't get those things...

Boo hoo.  Would you like some cheese with that WHINE?  Did you miss the part about getting discounted upgrades every year?  The $10 sale, the Spring Sale, the 30% off sale, etc.?  The free tech support?  Yes, new customers get a lot of great deals.  We were ALL new customers at one point, and every time we get in on a great new deal, we're new customers again.  You act like just because you bought something once, sometime, Cakewalk now owes you every time somebody else gets a good deal.  Puhlease.

Yes, Cakewalk is a business.  They're in it for the money.  I bet you like to get paid in your business, too.  Cakewalk is a good company that has demonstrated an uncommon dedication to its customers with upgrade deals, sales and discounts, FREE phone support, FREE videos, an active user forum, and a responsiveness to customer feedback that is frankly unparalleled.

It seems like you blame Cakewalk for trying to run a profitable business.   So the "production suite" wasn't available as a package back when you wanted it to be.  How is that a failing on Cakewalk's part?  NOW it IS available, and for some reason you feel slighted by that?  Businesses are always coming up with new angles to sell their products.  Hey, I understand some feel disappointed when the next deal comes along for something they already bought, but that's the way it goes.  Why does that make Cakewalk the bad guys?

I'm all about keeping companies honest and curtailing corporate greed.  But there's a world of difference between "corporate greed" and just normal business.  We're not talking about foreclosing on poor old widows, or killing puppies or something.  Think about it.  You're essentially accusing Cakewalk of being a corporate monster for...wait for it...offering discounts and free stuff.  Oh, the humanity!

Um, yeah.  Right.  Call me when they start taking food from orphans.  Until then...la viva Cakewalk!

Heather,

There's nothing to Boo Hoo about, and I don't blame Cake for anything...and NO I don't want any Cheese thank you...

Companies run on a business plan....with tick marks and intervals...if the goal is met by this date we'll do A...if not we'll do B...etc...

All understood....

AS I SAID...I'm content....I'm just stating the truth...

BTW....I make $4 an hour after I pay taxes and Child Support....I make $9.00 an hour GROSS...YET...I've managed to buy these things from Cake..

I'm happy that Cake gives away freebies....and deals....that helps me a lot...

AND these things aren't a tax right off for me like they are for many of you who use them for your business (I know not all of you do)

I LOVE my Sonar X1...and until something that I feel is better comes along...as I did with Cubase, and Pro Tools, I'll stick with it...

I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me....not in the LEAST....and I'm not accusing Cake...I'm accusing ALL businesses...

We somehow believe, in the big business world, that WE are entitled to those BIG BONUSES, etc...even though most here in the US can't even make ends meet...and that "bending the truth" is OK if it makes us MORE MONEY...it's all POLITICS....because that's what Politicians do....they spend MILLIONS of dollars to get elected to jobs that pay $100,000 (Congress) to $450,0000 (President).....WHY? BECAUSE THERE'S A WHOLE LOT MORE THAT WE DON'T SEE!!!  WHY do WE THE PEOPLE, not only ALLOW this to happen, but encourage it????  And, while those here in the US, who make six figures plus sit in their posh offices and say...I'VE EARNED THIS...don't consider that the "little people" are the ones who got them there by slaving away in factories and shops to get the product made and delivered...THIS is the mentality that OUR SOCIETY as a whole promotes..

NOVEL IDEA...how 'bout all those Corporate Big Wigs and Celebs that make BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, stop buying Ferraris and Mansions, and throwing OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive parties, that THEY ARE ENTITLED TO, instead use that money to help the poor?  THAT WOULD BE TRULY NOBLE AND PRAISEWORTHY!!!  Use that money that you have "Earned" to create NEW JOBS and put more Americans back to work....so that "everyone" benefits....THAT is TRUE compassion and CARING...
Cake is FAR BETTER THEN THE REST when it comes to taking care of their customers.....that is FOR SURE from my experience...and I was with the big 2 longer then I've been with Cake...

MY point is ....a GOOD Business, and GOOD BUSINESS PLAN, takes ALL into account...not just numbers and figures and goals and bonuses...

I already own everything in the Production Suite except for Zeta 2.1   ...and if I REALLY wanted it I would have already bought it...
ESPECIALLY when it was on sale....

So, NO...I don't want anyone to feel sorry for me....YES....Cake is a business...

It's the WAY they go about doing things that there are issues with...and it may be COMPLETELY unintentional on their part...
THAT is why a GOOD business plan will take ALL into account....not just the NEW.

AND YES...IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY...which is what I've been saying all along...it's the CAPITALIST WAY!!!

JesusMics.....the Quad is good way to go....I, too, will be upgrading to the Octa when I am able...I plan on using it to record as well as live...to use Sonar as my LIVE mixing board...that way I get to use all my plugs LIVE as well...and, if all goes well, will add a second one later on.  AND There is is NO UPGRADE PATH AT PRESENT from Expanded to Production Suite...ONLY from Producer to Production Suite..because Expanded is included in the Suite... =P

That's all for me on this....it's completely irrelevant and pointless, as business will continue to do what they do...and WHO they do..

Peace

Heather,

I have the Akai LPK-25 Mini....it's GREAT....

I have limited space on my desk...so it works perfect...

I had the Korg nanoKey....but didn't much care for that...

cclarry, you sound a lot like a dear friend of mine.  She's always on that "evil corporate crimes against society" kick.  I will not deny that corporations, just like individuals are capable of some very unsavory practices.  Even if 100% of the "evil corporation" rhetoric was true (a statitistical improbability but let's just go there anyway), it would just mean that Cakewalk was pretty much par for the course and that you somehow expect them to survive in shark infested waters by being a guppy. Why do youy feel that Cakewalk , of all companies has to be so much above all other companies in this regard?

regarding the akai mini, i don't find the keys very playable but good for auditioning notes and sequencing brief melodies.  The pads are actually decent for the price range.  I own the lp8 which has similar pads.

Five pages and it's still the same end result: new customers *sometimes* get better deals than existing customers.   And so it goes.   Something tells me another five pages isn't going to change a thing.

And now for the flip side...  I couldn't get the Concrete Limiter for the previous $10 sale price because I did not qualify - I hadn't already purchased all the other PC modules.   So the sale that existing PC module customers got was better than the one I got.   But I bought the limiter anyway because I wanted it, and IMO it was worth the $50 I paid.  I could have waited for that next sale and possibly got it cheaper, but I did not.  And that has nothing to do with CW's business decisions.

I suppose I actually do feel responsible for decisions that are completely, 100% within my control.
