Hey CrayonJones :)

Yes, your right. If they put in full implmentation of VBA people would be able to make Sonar work how they want it to.

Programs like Reactor owe a lot of their success to users making what they want and Im sure if Reactor was "hardwired" their next version list would be as long. The fact there are 202 feature requests makes a strong case for VBA implmentation.

I know that there is a official way to make feature requests but I think we can talk about our desires, likes and dislikes also here in the forum.

That is true-- just keep in mind that unless someone actually submits the request in the proper fashion, all this talk is worthless.

:} At the risk of a little redundancy here:

Cakewalk has a ready database of requests, gripes, kudos opinions and ideas here... They'd be silly not to take advantage of it.

Less third party stuff... are you talking about the lexicon and sonitus plugins?

No, I'm talking about the VSC and the notoriously underdocumented VSampler. The Sonitus plugs are a Godsend for the majority of the group, and a requirement for the EQ. I have Waves 4 Platinum and WaveArts Plugs, so none of the additional 3rd-party stuff is of any use to me (except the afore-mentioned Sonitus stuff), and I wish I could purchase Sonar without them and save some money.

That's just me, though.

Cakewalk can buy stuff in quanity here {to say nothing of the advertising value of having your product included {endorsed} in one of theirs... Perhaps they can get us a deal. :} Maybe this is a good place for requests...

{I get the feeling that Waves plugins are probably going to be a little out of the ballpark though...}

Pythoncard...very nice. I've never used it nor heard of it before now. Thanks for the link...I'll be checking that out. Most of my Python is server-based management scripting, text-processing, and web scripting on Unix and Windows, but I"ve been wanting to get into cross-platform application building and have tinkered with wxWindows and some other Python GUI builders but not done anything serious.

Python interpreters are very embeddable...does Cakewalk have a mechanism to integrate custom-developed add-ons in Sonar?

I messed with Python a while back... {:} When Pythoncard was at about version .00001} It's a nice language. {Even if it's not as easy as oberon}

Personally... I'd prefer ruby or scheme or lisp so that you could easily tie in common music, snd, foo, etc, etc... {besides... lisp is simple} Adobe's using python for their open source extension to After Effects though... {which ties into Perforce's SCM and, by extension... websphere, etc...} Python might make my life easier in the future.

The cal interface? ...I really don't know.

WOW, what a thread!! ;)

a lot of discussing about something i still dont really understand. i started the feature request threads over last weeks because i wanted to discuss my wishes with you all. fortunately there are lots of people who have the same interest.
i think it is good to have that kind of list for a program that we all like and work with. the more there are the better the programs gonna be. e.g. some of the added requests i never even would have thought about.

1nce again to ghijkmnop:

if you dont want to, then say it so... but i wouldnt understand
My point is that it's counter-productive to keep piling on the feature requests. I'd actually like to see LESS in the next version.

i try to understand your viewpoint but like daydream i dont understand it.

Again, I am not hindering the FR process at all; I am encouraging it to be done properly. Actually, it's as much "my place" to try and steer the discussion into the real world as it is yours to criticize me for doing it. Discussion is great, but if all that gets done is discussion led by one person, it's a distinct possibility that only one FR will be made for each of the items here, lessening the priority of ALL 200+ of them. Keep in mind that I have NOT criticized ANY of these requests.

what means "done properly"..

kind regards, jeff

In that post, if you clicked on the word "properly", it would have opened the feature request page. That is the way to get the requests heard properly. Continue the discussion.

It escapes me why people are thinking I'm trying to squelch the discussion; I don't wish that at all. Oh well. Have fun, everyone-- make sure you use the form.

Till this day, I shake my head reading people's request and yahoos replying that Sonar 3 is already good ie
quote:

MightyLeeMoon

Jeez. 202 things that need to be added. You would think Sonar 3 stinks.

well, make it better!! No one said Sonar 3 stinks. But if there's something that people what. Why they hell are you arguing with that? That's what they want!!

I dont' understand people's logic sometimes when they limit progress directly or indirectly.

If there's a work around that you know to solve someone's problem or feature request, offer them in this board. But still don't shun their requests.

So you think that by throwing every feature in the world into Sonar, it will become some Utopian wonder app?

I went to school with kids that thought that if you mixed all the colours together you would end up with some wonderful colour that nobody had ever seen before. In fact, you end up with a dirty looking slime.

Too many features can lower stability, make menus very hard to navigate, over complicate the GUI, etc. I'm sure one day, someone will invent a machine that washes the dishes and mows the lawn...

With Sonar and its a killer como. It has most of what Ive asked for and I get to keep what I have learned with Sonar because it can work as a VST. Check out the tutorials for it.

Now that I have the features I needed the only thing I would really like to see is is full VB support.

Visual basic pro is $1,079 {Ms pages}
Sonar 3 producer is 719.00 {Cakewalk}

This would make the cost of Sonar 4 something like 1,798.oo ...plus whatever additional they add to the base price.

...I'll be happy with scheme and common music http://ccrma.stanford.edu/software/cm/doc/cm.html . :}

{It might be nice if they packaged Eyesweb with Sonar as well... for folk that use the midi functions, dontcha' know...}

Hi exe :)

I have Visual Basic.Net Delux. It came with a nice manual and all the installation software. The only restriction I can find (please correct me if Im wrong) is that I cant sell anything I make with it. So I can make apps for myself and I can share them with them comunity. It cost me £99 from PC World (a high street computer shop) so I know I could find it cheaper but I needed it for an assignment.

I havent even talked abou Dephi yet :) Its free with the same restrictions. Its like Visual Basic on steriods but I picked up the basics in an afternoon. I am in no way a programmer so if I can get my head around it my cat can!

Cakewalk did have a universal interface with Studioware which is why I miss it in SP3. I have 2.2 so I can make them but it is a shame they took it out. When I learn more about VSampler I'll make a Studioware for it for instance. So that I can have all the paramiters I want to automate in one place looking and working exactly like I want them.

Don't need VB - VBS ships with Windows (ie. essentially free), but more importantly, if the relevant SONAR interfaces were exposed in the right way, you could use VBS, JS, PerlScript...anything that can be used for Windows scripting.

VBA is different from VB (as in the Visual Studio programming language), Microsoft Word and Excel come with VBA support built in, as do many other programs, AFAIK it is free to implement, all you have to do is make sure that your application (in this case Sonar) has it's API exposed... and then link in the VBA support.

For those of you who are considering VB/VBS/VBA/VB.NET, have you considered that a .cwp or .cwb file with VB-type macros built in could conceivably be used to launch malicious code, perhaps to delete all .wav files, etc., a la Melissa and ILOVEYOU?

I know that's a doomsday scenario, and Sonar is a niche app in the grand scheme of things. I'd also like to see a macro language for writing specific routines, but I'm not sure VB is the way to go.

I don't see why you'd embed the macros into a cwp file; just make it available to operate on loaded data.
