SONAR X1 vs Pro Tools 9?
I guess nobody sees the irony of SONAR X1 and Pro Tools breaking news in the same week, nor have i seen a thread on this topic. Coincidence or not doesnt matter. I think we all can agree that SONAR is a overall better, more flexible program. It caters more towards the creativity and keeps in the zone of making music when the ideas and inspiration come flying in. If you really know what you're doing and know the program well you can make industry sounding mixes will little effort.. BUT!!! If i had a dollar for every time i heard "Send me the Pro Tools session" the i would be RICH!!! I am a BIG Cakewalk fan, and I'm talking since Cakewalk Home Studio 6(that should make the cakewalk team happy lol) all the way up SONAR8.5. I love everything they have done with the program throughout the years, dealt with crash after crash on some versions and have stuck with it. Now that im am in the industry as a producer im am forced to incorporate Pro Tools at some point in placing a track. The Label or Engineer always wants the song or music tracked out in a Pro Tools Session. Because of this, I have become pretty adapt in working in pro tools mainly learning how to do the things i already know how to do in SONAR. One of my biggest problems with pro tools was the interface i was forced to use to be compatible with their software. I was a little relieved when M-Audio announced compatibility with pro tools, but that wasn't much better. I own three different Interfaces, Delta 44, Motu Ultralite MK3, and M-Audio firewire solo. The MOTU obviously sounding the best, having the lowest latency, and have the most flexibility. BUT!!! This week Pro Tools announced that its new version is compatible with ANY AND EVERY interface answering the long time beef that many people have with digidesign! This is a game changer for the industry. i now plan on buying and using Pro Tools more because I can now use my Ultralite with Pro Tools! How does the new version of SONAR stack up to this announcement? What improvements can they make that will offset this breakthrough? Would making there software cross--platform be the answer they need? Me personally... I would love to see sonar running on a much more stable MAC. I think the company would get more respect in the professional industry if they did so. After all, professionals are the ones with the big budgets and can afford to spend ten times as much for an elaborate Pro Tools setup. I think that if Cakewalk made there software cross platform and showed the industry that their software IS professional. I dont know about the rest of the users on this forum but I'm tired of having to export my projects out of sonar via "OMF" file and put them into pro tools to get a placement. I will continue to use SONAR to make and produce my music and will purchase the new version when it releases. Being a cakewalk fan since Home Studio 6 if i had any suggestions for the new release they be as follows.... 1. Jump down these third party VST developers to thoroughly test there software with SONAR(most of the problems i have had with sonar is with VST plugins working with DAW, not the actual daw!) 2. Make a way to add sends to multiple tracks at once(I love to track vocals in SONAR and when when mixing need to add reverb, delay and sometime chorus sends to lots of tracks... doing so individually takes lots of time) 3 Improve overall stability of the program and its functions(Sonar does a good job with this already, but there's always room for improvement) 4. More than eight faders on the V Studio 700(eight faders are usefull but when mixing big projects and tracking vocals, its more of a hassel banking trough faders. I current own MCU and extenders but i wanna switch to the V Studio but wont because i love my 24 :-) )

Mac is no more stable than Windows. Ask any of the DAW builders here and they will tell you the same thing. If you have a Windows PC set up correctly, you can have a very stable system running SONAR. There is already a way to insert sends to multiple tracks at once. Just select the tracks you want to add to and then right-click one of the tracks and use the Insert > Send menu. The new send will be added to all selected tracks. Banking the faders on the V-Studio 700 takes less than a second. It's very easy to navigate a mix using the system. Scott -- Scott R. Banking... That is just the problem.. I dont want to have to navigate the mix... I want to see a physical representation of more than 8 faders at a time, and while Cakewalk's, V Studio--700 control surface is very good and deeply integrated, it does not offer this option. So ill stick with my MCU and extenders for the time being. And if you're going to make a surface to integrate with your software, pay attention to the people who have done it and had success with it. Make it EXPANDABLE! Euphonix, Mackie, Even the tascam units are expandable. If i could get a 24 fader version of the V-Studio, i would sell my MCU in a heartbeat! And im not questioning the stability of macs or PCs, because I've successfully built my own. I was simply stating that Digidesign/AVID have tackled a long time problem with interface compatibility that will more than likely convince new users from other programs. Cakewalk is going to have to do something to offset deficit and I think making there software cross platform, while pricey, would benefit the company in the long run. And... at the end of the day, i still have to provide my finished product(song or music) in a workable protools session. It undeniable! How does Cakewalk counter that?

I'm pretty sure he meant that Apple is better at making TV commercials promoting their product-and I agree with that completely. He's also right when he says PCs are just (if not more) stable than Macs if they're configured properly.

Being an old M$ Computer Tech Macs are better and easier is a "myth" Many years ago when MAcs GUI was years ahead of Windoze this could have been argued. Not today and not for a while. Also, PT , they said they "do not" support the 3rd party hardware. So how does that make anyone feel good?

I am a SONAR user so don't think I am trying too hard to defend Pro Tools ............ but let's face some reality.. If it was as unstable and problematic as some of you make it sound, 75% of the professional world would not be using it everyday.

You have a very high opinion of "professionals" and perhaps you are a tad naive. Don't get me wrong ---- see the 3rd definition here..... PT9 does not have: - 64-bit core and plugins - 64-bit Audio Engine - surround *) - input monitoring on/off *) - VST support **) - fast offline bounce - unlimited I/O *) - 'advanced audio editing' and some other functions found in normal DAWs. *) CPTK2 ($2000) heals these annoyances But I will buy it. Clients dig, I skip... I'll mention PT9 in advertisements but continue using Sonar as primary DAW. After going to Sonar 64-bit there's no way back to 32-bit DAW. Freddie was always right :-).

I should have stated it better. Honestly it doesn't matter to me anyway. I am in my own home studio and Sonar is fine for since CWPA.6 I believe. The only other thing I ever tried was Reaper (about 10x install, uninstall) Just didn't do it for me.

Why should I know that? I ran a Waves4 for 6 years and a stack of MOTUs for 8. It never occurred to me to call Cakewalk if they had trouble. My MOTU 896HD blew a fuse... I called MOTU not Cakewalk. The fire wire dasiy chain on my MOTU doesn't work... Cakewalk doesn't have anything to do with that. The ADAT input on my MOTU comes in attenuated 3dB. Who should I call about that? Maybe the claim by a company that it doesn't support third party hard ware is not as ominous as some make it out to be. Maybe that's just sort of normal? best regards, mike
