btw, i wish soundcloud didn't show the waveform so people would use their EARS for a change. (sheesh) What a waveform looks like gives no indication of how "professionally" it is mixed. Dynamics are not the enemy of music OR of modern production. Neither mix has been mastered yet (other than a quickie) It looks like girl 2 is pulling ahead in the polls......

I thought Girl2 sounded better. Not sure if you have said which is which. I read your first post, listened, now I'll go back and read the rest. Thanks for posting. Good song and good test.

And the raw tracks were all recorded in SONAR.... So this is maybe an interesting comparison, but it should be made very clear to all that this does not, in any way, compare the actual quality of the DAWs.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Listening through headphones at work, but Girl (not Girl2) is far and away the better mix. Not sure the DAW has anything to do with it, but Girl2 sounds over-compressed & too homogenised. Girl is much more open and balanced. To me there is a very clear winner and loser - not close at all. But probably down to the engineers ears, not the DAW or plugins. Edit: I'd like to think Girl was mixed in Sonar, because I personally think it's better, but I fear the opposite is true. So I will nail my colours to the mast and say Girl=PT & Girl2=Sonar.

http://soundcloud.com/american-metal/high-on-the-wire-pre now if it had some sonar audio like this clip .it would show who has content. PT is alright , but i remixed this track on sonar anf dumped the PT mix, since i didnt have years of knowledge on it. i crawled home to sonar day and mixed this . and after a group of my lost friends sitting here bugging my session to a halt , so we listen to both we all liked the 2nd. first wasnt as good of a mix but sounded, crisp like analog tape filter

I prefer the one in the second link. It's clearer, wider, and there's less mud. There were certain points in the one in the first link where the bass was out of control.

so most everyone said the same thing as I did, but you singled me out for "berating you"? (and I wasn't even the first to say the things I did - I just pointed them out differently) whatever. I just stated the facts as I saw them. it is a ridiculous comparison - you've already admitted it's not a controlled experiment. you've also admitted you don't take yourself too seriously - so, why be upset?

☄ Helpful
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the first is Sonar, the 2nd is ProTools. I'm basing it on the drums, the drums seem to have a fair amount of SoftTube Saturation. The argument against is the bass on the 2nd seems to have been enhanced as well, it's very muddy so once again it could be someone is useing the Soft Tube. Either way version one is the better of the two, it has more punch and doesn't feel so amature. As someone pointed out though it's like apples and oranges it doesn't matter what the track is mixed on it's the mixer. I also think this is a cunning plan to get people to listen to the song. Peace Ben

I love Bapu as much as anybody, but I just wanted to give enough people a chance to chime in before giving away the bag. Beagle- I was only kiddin bro! I will tally the results and post the Truth tomorrow afternoon. Thanks to everyone who participated so far. In my opinion, the differences in the two mixes have more to do with the different artisitc approaches than anything else. I even think that similar mixes could be achieved if the two engineers switched DAWs (or as some of you more accurately stated, either plugin sets). I don't believe there is any difference in the SOUND of one DAW vs. another. Hardware matters- plugins matter, Bit depth, sample rate and dithering all matter. It has been very useful to me to hear peoples' comments about each mix. Thank you, all.
