There may be some confusion here with girl 2  being listed first but for me the 2nd link (girl) sounds much better.

Girl 2 pro tools and girl Sonar Girl two sounds more dynamic more crisp where Girl, sounded smooth but no dynamics to elevate the song as girl 2 has done. Girl 2 = better mix!

Well I prefer "Girl" without the 2, Much better mix. I'm also guessing this is from the protools mixer.
The drum mix on the "Girl2" is not my cup of tea.

So don't berate me for posing a ridiculous comparison- I don't take myself that seriously so why should you?

Hey Blix,

I think the point folks are making is that there are too many variables for any type of meaningful comparison.
Different DAW, different D/A, different monitors, different physical space, different engineer, different plugins, etc.

Given the circumstances, the DAW software itself would IMO be the least significant variable/difference.

FWIW, I can hear the limiter clamping down on the drums in mix 2 (second link).
Thus, I like the drums in the mix 1 (1st link) better.

I'm going to say that mix 2 (second link) is ProTools/Waves.

The only way to really test this out is a blind study wherein the music is done in exactly the same way right across the board..same VST(i)'s, same real instrumentation, et cetera... even then it is going to sound somewhat different due to what Jim pointed out...

By the way Girl 2 sounds better to my ears....mix wise

I prefer girl2 as well but what's the point? You're not comparing daws, you're comparing plugins. Why didn't you use the same Waves plugins in Sonar?

An apples to apples comparison would use the same FX presets and same FX in the same insert order. Ideally, the only difference would really just be the mix engine.

ok you have your apples and oranges, great song by the way (Pink Floyd) fo those of you not in the know.  What song is what??

You have milked this for all that is worth, you have probably had 50 or so hits, if you took this to the song forum and worked with everyone in the song forum, you would have got as many hits.

If you listen to people's tunes, they tend to listen back.  Example, I have got almost 200 people to listen to one of my tunes, probably more than this exercise has got you, why? because I take time to foster my relationships with those who frequent the song forum.

Either tell us which is which or please mods move this to the song forum.

Peace Ben

I prefer the 8" Rapalla and 40lb test when I'm trolling. As for the songs, meh. A comparison (controlled experiment) is only valid if all critical parameters (software, plugs, monitors, room etc) are known and in control. As most have noted, these variables are different in the two songs. This invalidates any conclusions other than what do you like best.

I think it's fair to pick the song you like the sound of, but to say it's due to the DAW software is not a valid conclusion. Too many other variables involved.

I think more than anything this just shows you can do a perfectly good mix in Sonar without spending thousands on Waves etc, and people don't know which mix was done in Sonar or had thousands spent on it.
It must come down to knowledge and experience.
I like both mixes.

A few people here are criticising this test because both DAWs didn't use exactly the same plugins and settings.

To me, this is stupid.  Because if they were both mixed exactly the same with the same plugins, they would sound identical and therefore even those with "golden ears" could probably not pick a difference.

To me, the value of this test is in what is possible in Sonar with mostly out-of-the-box FX, as opposed to PT with, presumably, hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of Waves FX.

As a result, if it turns out that you favour the Sonar recording, it means that Sonar represents a great value proposition over a potentially much more expensive alternative option.

Good point Silicon!

A lot of people do not realize that Sonar, Pro Tools, all of them can generate a pristine mix. People still think the DAW is going to be the difference.

It really isnt. What DAW you like to use is what matters. What kind of mix you get is 99% up to you!

Sonar is in the same category of quality as any other DAW out there. Its up to us to make it happen, not the DAW!

GIRL2 by a long way.  Way clearer especially in bottom end.  Seems Girl1 is a little smudged to me.

I suspect Pro Tools takes it but I'd love if I was wrong.  If somehow this was 100% DAW difference I would have to reconsider what DAW I use.

There is nothing to compare. Both mixes are different so there is nothing to compare except apples and oranges.

My guess would be that mix 1 is PT.

Actually this thread has me a little concerned.  I think the difference is huge between the 2 files.  Sure it cannot be user error in 1 and not the other.   I'm sure there was no sabotage going on and both DAW mixes where done as best they could be.

I've been mixing in SONAR for years and recently got Slates VCC to help me even further to get better/clearer seperation.  I just cannot get it in Sonar to the extent I hear in GIRL2.  Oh no!  I sure hope I'm wrong about that 1 being PT  ;<

What's the point then? There's no reason that both DAWs could not present a similair mix with different plugs. I think the first one is PT because the test was purposly flawed so that the first mix sounds better because the mix was much better. The second mix IMO did sound better but was not a polished as the first.

Listened then came immediately to this last post without reading any other comments.

girl (or the second on the list) not the first one.

IT'S LOUDER:-)

Ooops...didn't see that I was supposed to guess which is which.  I'll stick with my louder pick as the PT Waves one but who knows?  Now that I've looked back I see most folks like "girl2" which it the first mix on the list.  Go figure.  I'm a rebel Dottie, a loner.  Plus the one I like is LOUDER!!!!

PS:  Here's another thing I'm bettin since I got the big eye on myself...I think a lot of folks are talkin about the wrong mix.  Girl2 is the first (top) mix...not the second (bottom) one.  Which, natch, is stupid...but fun.  Did I mention that the second mix is LOUDER!!!!!!!
