Same song mixed in Sonar AND Pro Tools. Which do you prefer?

It just occured to me to NOT label them so you listeners wont know which is which.
I will make the truth known a few days from now :)

Can you tell which one was mixed in Sonar and which was mixed in Pro Tools?
The ProTools version was done with mostly Waves plugins.
The Sonar version was done with mostly Sonar plugins.
Which do you prefer?

I prefer girl2 because it sounds rounder and smoother and it suits better to lyrics.
I have no idea if it's done by SONAR or ProTools.

EDIT: additions.

Not that it actually matters. But on my laptop speakers here, I think the second one (The one without the 2 after the title) sounded a little more well rounded and crisp.
If I had to choose , I'd pick the one with the working metronome and automation.

I prefer girl2 as well but what's the point? You're not comparing daws, you're comparing plugins.
Why didn't you use the same Waves plugins in Sonar?

No 2 sounded like playing back a cassette tape with 'dolby' turned on kind of a little over-tightness..

No 1 sounded more natural, but the high eq a bit loose..

Never can tell which is done by X1. I prefer more to No 1.

....Girl2

Seems like a modern mix.

I would venture to say it was PT & Waves.

The other sounds like a very decent home studio recording but lacks shimmer.

But  I agree with others. What's the pint unless you mix both the same way (i.e. same plugs, same settings). So yeah, I'm casting my vote based on my belief of plugs not DAW.

Mike

not only that but it's a completely ridiculous "comparison."

which version of ProTools?  if HD then there's no direct comparison possible.  if you used PC based PT then did you use the same converters (soundcard) and did you record them both simultaneously in PT & Sonar?  if not simultaneous then at least using the exact same hardware equipment and even then with 2 different "takes" it's not the same.

if you recorded in one, then mixed in both that's completely not a fair comparison.

what about plugins?  were the plugins used exactly the same?  unlikely, so again, completely irrelevant "comparison."

there are no details given for this "comparison."  there's no control listed for the experiment.

it's not even worth the effort to listen to the 2 samples.

Immediately, about 30 seconds of A/B'ing, I conclude this:

It is really hard to compare those because, never mind DAWS and plugins, there is a lot of difference in plain levels at many points.

I.E., right away on one of them, the vocal is too low while on the other it is up in the mix. You can see it in the waves. The whole beginning is real low on one of them, then the bass line just jumps out. On the other, it was mixed better where the volume is more relative in the beginning to when it goes to the next section.

One is simpler more professionally mixed on a basic level, regardless of plugins or what DAW it is.

One program doesnt make the song sound better. There is no sound difference between the 2 programs. If its different, then its mixed different.

Just looking at the waveforms for both songs shows the mix is so different that there's no way to make a sensible comparison between the DAWs or plugins.

For what it's worth, I prefer the mix on Girl(1) as it sounds more open and clear, but I've a head cold. Which makes me wonder if without the cold Girl(1) would be too bright.

I do prefer the dynamics and increased punch of girl(1) though.

For a comparison, you need to use the same raw audio tracks, the same plugins with the same settings, e.q. as close as possible, mix the the same balance between tracks, limit to similar levels and duplicate the mastering as far as possible. Otherwise you're asking which mix people prefer, not which DAW "sounds better".

The two mixes are so different. It is not a fair comparison. No.1 has louder bass. A sudden rise in dynamics after the intro. No.2 goes smoothly into the verse from the intro. The same plugin and volume automation should be applied to the two examples. Even if you guess right you can be wrong

One could suggest it's not the DAW making the difference so how does guessing the DAW matter when so many other variables exist?  The fact that different Plugins were used invalidates the DAW being the major contributing factor.  Did you choose to use Waves with ProTools and not Sonar for a reason?  Is this a question of which "package" produces better results?  If so, does ProTools come with all the Waves plugins and I just missed something?  Seems a more sound test would be using only included plugins and then it's still a comparison of the total package, not the actual DAW.

Just an observation.

Re:Same song mixed in Sonar AND Pro Tools. Which do you prefer? 2012/03/11 15:13:29 (permalink)
OK OK OK!
Great discussion by the way (except you, Beagle :(

Here are some more details...
The raw tracks are identical- recorded in Sonar with a Profire 2626 and Octane.
One was mixed on a Mac in protools using a Digi 03.
And the other was mixed in Sonar with the 2626.

They were NOT mixed by the same person!
They are NOT supposed to be identical mixes- this is not a scientific experiment with controls and blah blah- it is for FUN and curiosity.

There are so many people that think that if you are not running a mac or not running pro tools then you are not serious or competitive in this business.

In this instance, two competing platforms both took a stab at the same material using the available tools (I have the same waves plugins in Sonar but I really like alot of the Sonar stuff- use it all the time!)

So don't berate me for posing a ridiculous comparison- I don't take myself that seriously so why should you?

Cheers!

honestly i dont get why people make such a fuss over the  2-3 top daws.
its what ever get you where your going. il take fruitloops if there is some pro behind the helm. its all about knowledge.
somthing you can hear is lame is mostly from bad prodution, somthing iv seen on  both daws,
and both songs sounded clean, but i liked the 2 version
sonar will be my end choice  on after,

I think that there's a point to this, more so in view of the recent discussions about the theoretical sound differences between DAW X vs DAW Y. If Sonar had a particular sound, it'd be instantly recognizable - considering that the majority here must have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours working w/ it.

And if the sinple fact of using third party plug-in could entirely mask that evidence that Sonar sounds "different", well it'd show how ridiculously unimportant that difference really would be.

I think that that's the light-hearted point here - anyone guessing could be wrong. It's not the software...

The point is, your thread title says song mixed in pro tools vs. sonar, but the DAW really has nothing to do with why the mixes are so different, like not at all at all at all lol.
