So what's the verdict on Lexington? Anyone found any problems yet?

Hello all and happy Boxing Day (err... I think that might actually be just a Canucker thing but it is indeed Boxing Day... so just happy "today" to everyone who doesn't know WTF I'm talking about).

Usually by this time after a release a few sniggles and warbles have been uncovered but I don't see any reports. This could be simply because everyone has real lives and spent the past few days with family. However I would also expect maybe some folks used at least some of their time off for the holidays to futz around with Lexington.

So what are we looking at with this release? A nice solid version to round out the year? I've been kind of itching to update and was gonna hop on Kingston but with the lack of problem reports perhaps Lexington is the better bet.

That is my looong winded way of asking... has anyone had ANY problems with Lexington? If so what are they and how do they manifest themseleves? I just like to know what to keep an eye out for when I do update.

My subscription is about to run out in a month or two (thanks doods... been a great year) so this might be a good one to squat on until I can sort something out (one day my kingdom will come... lol).

On a side note... I've noticed an OLD issue that used to drive me bonkers crept it's way back in this year. At least on my current version (Foxboro and before that Gloucester). That is the "Vertical Screen Jumping to the Parent Track" when selecting clips with lanes open across different tracks. It's a hard one to explain concisely without dredging up the old threads and may have been recorrected since Foxboro so if Lexington is as solid as I think it might be I'll test and report that independently.

Alright... I hope everyone had a happy and safe Christmas and many thanks to the forum for... well just bein' the awesome doods and doodettes you are.

Cheeeeers!!!!

Start screen takes randomly long to open or doesn't open at all - Was same in K (no internet connection in studio, could be the reason).

My two bugs were not fixed. The Newsletter contained a reference to clip issues but evidently not my clip issues. I could have saved the 2 1/2 hour download... Grumble.

Starting a new project this weekend, includes intensive MIDI but probably won't need any of the new features yet, but will try anyway. Will see how things go.

Thanks for the report. I haven't even gotten to a version with the new Start Screen yet (I was hoping they would tweak it so we could disable the phone home crap but they haven't).

I fully intend to disable the Start Screen as soon as I install it because of that behavior.

It's actually kind of funny in a way because the old Start Screen and "Recent Projects" section of the global File menu have been weaning me off the only use I really have for the old start screen anyway.

By that I mean for some reason the old Start Screen and my Recent Projects list in the File menu has been ommitting the latest version of my projects. Like if I save something then shut down the system next time I boot up and open Sonar it doesn't list that project as the most recent project. It lists the one before that.

So I've been simply using File > Open - sorting by "Date" in the project folder to open my projects.

It's a little annoying but whatever. Probably best to make SURE I am on the project I intend to be on anyway because sometimes it's hard to tell once the buggers are open due to my obsessive "versioning".

Basically this won't affect me as long as we are still able to disable the Start Screen.

Thanks again.

I have not found any problems with Lexington. Some long time annoyances have been fixed for me. You may find the same.  Its time you bit the bullet and updated Beep! You can always roll back if you do find a problem.

Well... aside from the screen jumping thing I cannot think of a single thing that bites me in the butt on a regular basis that isn't part of the actual stated design of the program.

Maybe I'm using Sonar the wrong way.

:-p

However I would very much like some extra speed and stability which is what was making my pants a little tighter about Kingston. I haven't gotten to muck with the Aux Tracks stuff yet either which could be quite useful for my insano workflow.

Yeah... alright. I'd better do Lexington.

PS: As a hardnosed "offliner" the "rollback" stuff isn't quite as casual for me as it is for others. It requires an actual manual install of the older version which supposedly works based on some reports but something I would definitely like to avoid if possible. Otherwise it would mean a System Restore procedure (not a system image reload which is way more annoying)... which isn't a big deal either but can kind of do odd things as well.

Yes... I make things much more annoying on myself than need be... but my methods have worked so far so I ain't changin' 'em.

Cheers.

Nevermind the below.  You were explaining your allergy to rollback while I was recommending it
===

Kingston was solid for me, but most versions have been.  Lexington seems every bit as solid ... so far.  If I were you, I would go to Lexington and kick the heck outa the tires.  Roll back to Kingston if you feel the need.  Or any of the previous versions.

I have wrang the be-heyzeus out of the Rollback/Update functions in CCC.  They are very reliable.  You don't have to update in sequence to be able to roll back.  Grab the latest and roll back to whatever version you want ... CCC will download what it needs if you don't already have the files available.

Yeah, I'm in. I figured it might be a good spot for folks to report any oddities but none seem forthcoming (aside from that Start Screen issue but that doesn't affect actually making music if it's disabled anyway).

The only problems with Kingston from what I could tell weren't actually Kingston problems anyway. They were the "instrument" updates which had one fix applied but I forget to which instrument at this point. Gotta revisit that but those aren't part of the main Sonar installers anyway.

Cheers.

Cool. Thank you. This is what I was looking for.

This does not affect me personally because I'm generally too "lazy" to mess with my color schemes on a per project basis (or at all really) but I know it will bother others so good to have it posted here.

Thanks.

That thread, since it has been confirmed and has a report number, should probably get moved to the Problem Reports area for the Bakers to see... iffen thar be any kind hosts about who want to do so.

Well, at the risk of repeating myself - The "Event Inspector" no longer allows editing it's values.
All the other tools can be edited - try clicking in "Punch In/Out" for example.
I don't know in which Platinum version this stopped working in, but it works in X3e.

I probably don't get as deep into Sonar as you do Beepster, but I give it a good whirl every day.  I've not had a problem.  That said, just a start screen sniggle and some other minor stuff are ALL the problems I've really ever had, so I've never hesitated to update as soon as they are out.  I keep garbage off my computer and don't load the latest free VST either.  Also a StudioCat computer.
That said, I can do an Acronis re-install in a very short time.  My 100 gig .tib files only take about 10 minutes to make as well, if going to an internal drive or a USB3.  I typically never update, but just make new files and ditch the old.

I've just put in a ten hour day mixing, and put in about 4-5 hours on Xmas eve, and had no serious problems. Though it should be noted that's all audio-only stuff. I've not used any soft synths in that time, so issues with any of those, or with MIDI in a general sense, I wouldn't have come across.

I've had a couple of what I regard as unimportant crashes, where the program doesn't properly quit when I close it, though it does save the project just fine. But that's something that's happened every now and then since forever. It doesn't seem to be on the increase or anything; just noting it for the record.

I've been having some very bad crashing problems, which I finally (I believe) narrowed down to a specific set of conditions:

(Edit: Link went here, but I'm apparently still at the 'some restrictions apply' stage, so it got removed - it's in the main Sonar forum, 'Lexington crashes during recording in Comping/Sound on Sound' - Basically, if I record anything over existing data, in Comping or Sound on Sound, with the take lane view open, Sonar crashes 100% of the time)

I'd definitely be curious if anyone else can reproduce that; I'd think that'd impact a large number of users if it's widespread, but maybe I'm the only weirdo recording with the take lanes on ;)

It's driving me nuts so I am giving up for now. But I'm sure wiser heads than mine can figure out what's going on.

Right. I am not so sure it is working as it should. I do think because there are too many different findings I tend to think there is a problem.

Re: So what's the verdict on Lexington? Anyone found any problems yet? 2015/12/27 12:16:00 (permalink)
Hi, guys. Still watching but tracking (in Foxboro... want to get these rough tracks off to the composer before updating).

BeerFox

This would most definitely be a MAJOR problem for me because I always track with lanes open. I'd imagine though that if this were happening to everyone it would have been verified but people may still be pooping out their X-Mas turkeys.

Here is the link to your thread so people can test and verify...

If that IS the case I cannot update to Lexington. It does strike me as system specific.

So what exactly, based on your tests, is happening? I too use the Event Inspector to edit large swaths of MIDI notes (usually drum parts) so this would definitely be a problem unless there is a foolproof workaround. I checked out that thread but I'm not quite understanding whether or not, and what module state, foolproof editing can occur in. As in if I have to have the FULL "Large" module in the Control Bar to edit... or what. I have been minimizing a lot of my modules and editing in the popups but if a specific task requires it be done right in the Control Bar with a fully maximized module I can deal with that until it is fixed.

Cheers, doods. Gonna get back to my tracks but will be back.

I just posted in the other thread; I don't think there's anything wrong with the Event Inspector. It's all about the Select Tool failing to select notes on left-click in the PRV. I couldn't immediately find the thread, but I'm pretty sure this was discovered a while back - not new to Lexington.

Thanks, Brundler.

So you mean the ACTUAL Select Tool from the HUD... not the Smart Tool when in "Select" status? I do often use the Select Tool for a lot of stuff (such as selecting multiple MIDI notes) BUT many times I'll actually Lasso notes or select by "Row" (clicking on the corresponding key on the vertical keyboard).

Definitely ways around that if that;s what's going on but a broken Select Tool is no good. If it's an older issue it obviously can't be avoided by not installing Lexington though (if I want to get at the Aux Tracks and other goodies that have been intro'd since Foxboro).

hrrrmmm... yeah, not a dealbreaker. Almost... but not quite.

Thanks for the info.
