daryl1968, I agree that there still are many friendly people in the CH, and it is quite possible that your describing it as fractious is a more accurate.  It really might be that that is what I find troubling.

There is enough of that in the "real" world.

Yes, on further thought, I think you have described the underlying situation well (the personal attack issue I think is still a real one).

Ignoring someone making a reasoned point is a personal attack too?

I can't remember when I pooped in your Corn-Flakes but it seems I have somewhere down the line.

Jonbouy, to answer your questions:

1) I am not an arbitrator, just expressing my opinion.

2) I would say that you are engaging with me and my comments, and justification is not based on whether you agree with them.

IMO, you certainly do have the right to express yourself as you are doing.  I also agree with you that botlling things up is generally not healthy (as I am one who can be guilty of doing just that).

Where we will likely have to agree to disagree is that when disputes arise, I think that honey works better than vinegar.  Using harsh words can incite the other person to respond with equal or greater harshness, and the conflict often ends up escalating instead of being resolved.

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.

You use a word that some people find offensive for whatever reason. So just don't use it. Who cares?

There's lots of other perfectly good words. Many of them aren't offensive. Some of them may even be "colorful" without being particularly offensive.

This is the place you choose to stand up for your manhood or independence or whatever?

Really? This is that big a deal?

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

You can see how popular it makes me here in this instance.

Care to try it some day and see how much gaining you do?

I think your thesis is off the mark.

And you inability to use logic is alarming because all in all you seem like a very smart or at least very aware guy.

"he was one of the ones who agreed that it was offensive, yet I notice he made liberal use of the word"

You can't draw a conclusion based on your latest example... that's a fallacy known as denying the antecedent... and probably a few others as well.

Good luck.

The forum will be what it will be.

:-)

all the best,
mike
1) Your original point was not that you are offended by it, but that others might be offended by it.
2) Even it is was that you were offended by it, your motive could still be a feeling of moral superiority, or the demonization of someone else
3) It has nothing to do with denying the antecedant. I simply made the point that Beagle is one of the ones calling for a more respectable "tone" on the forum, and yet he saw nothing wrong with using a sexual curse word in another thread. It is what it is.

I don't specifically remember saying there nothing wrong with that term.  are you implying that I approved of it becuase I didn't say anything about it?  if so, please do not equate my silence with approval.

I am pretty sure I've not used the word in question myself, but if I have said something which showed I was "playing along" with the "joke" then I will accept that I might have done that.  however, I did say earlier in this thread that I am convicted by this discussion that I have lowered my standards and that I need to re-evaluate.  so if I have "approved" of the term you are describing I agree that I should not be and am trying to do better by myself in the future.

daryl1968, I was actually deliberately not referencing any one post in particular, as I would rather not make anything that "personal" as doing so would go against the very point that I am trying to make in this particular discussion.

Rather, I am thinking of an overall tendency that has crept into the CH from time to time over the last several months, starting with some of what Beagle has referenced earlier in the thread, and when some of that discussion ended up going in a more negative personal direction.

That series of events, IMO, did end up starting to change the culture in the CH, and that it has been, at times, a less friendly place since.

Although I may not always succeed, I try very hard to never attack a person: discussion - hopefully honest and constructive, or at least intended that way - with a person about a concern or issue IMO is certainly fair, but not an attack on a person, again IMO.

In the end, one certainly can agree to disagree on an issue, and hopefully remain friends.

Fair enough Jim - to be fair, I have rarely ventured outside the 'stupid thread' in recent months so I have been sheltered from any nastiness. Let it be said that you would be welcomed with open arms if you ventured in there. No nastiness but lots of stupidity and monkeys.

Trust me you don't need to take notes when something is barn door obvious and you can just join in when the mood takes you.
It's the spontaneous aspect that makes it fun.

I'm sure he can't tell when I'm joking or when I'm serious, but he always seems to come up with the most unexpected funny stuff and sometimes I've been able to provoke a little more than is first freely offered.
I think it is a result of the forum queitening down a bit as I never really noticed McQ that much but now it's like he's become more prominent.

daryl1968, I have visited the "stupid" thread from time to time, but have only rarely commented in it, as I'd rather not say anything in that thread unless I can add something humorous (which has happened on occasion).

Also, if a thread is going in a direction at any given time that I am not personally comfortable with, I will simply not post anything at that point in that thread.  I don't care to go along with some stuff, nor (since I am not an arbitrator <smile>) do I care to make a stink about it.

I responded to Bub in this thread, simply because I do believe that some have indeed left because of the issues raised.

As for the "stupid" thread itself, I think that type of thread has been an ideal solution to some of the issues that were raised: it keeps the option for the crazy banter, while at the same time removes the clutter some objected to in the CH.

On another level, it is possible that some of what is being discussed in this thread are simply differing views on the relationship between "my rights" vs. "concern for others".  If one focuses entirely on "my rights" the "other" is completely disregarded.  OTOH, if the concern is strictly for the "other" one then risks becoming a doormat.  Thus, it becomes more difficult to figure out what is reasonable, all the more so, when what one person thinks is acceptable another person thinks is way out of bounds.

I don't pop down here that often so perhaps I notice the differences in temperature more than some that frequent here often.

A bit like how you always notice someone you haven't seen for a long time has put on or lost weight, whereas if you see someone every day you don't.

Anyway it's definitely in a frosty state at the mo'.

The thread title caught my eye, I usually know what to expect when I see the name. I'm not disappointed, this thread is a classic, my sides hurt.

I've been reading Wikipedia just to make sure I had it right.

Beagle, my humblest apologies! I TOTALLY had you mixed up with someone else. You didn't use the word at all. Of course I should have double checked first....oops, egg on my face (and by a remarkable coincidence, I am indeed currently eating an egg sandwich)...

@McQ... If you had acknowledged my statements one way or another then I'd have a better gauge as to what the heck you were on about. Your complete silence was even more bizarre. It is hard to take any of your statements seriously after that.

You are a very odd duck Mr. McQ. Very odd indeed.

And you are welcome. I would have elaborated further on the theory but I am hesitant to interact with you.

@JB... The McQ ombudsman? That sounds like a crappy gig. :-/

For those trying to follow along at home, I found a diagram to help explain the relationships of CH participants:

You'll have to identify who's who yourself.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
