A lot of these types of businesses stemmed from music enthusiasts of various stripes first. Unfortunately many of these same companies got caught up in expansion woes which lead us to what is now happening...investment banks having taken over the company, with little understanding of what is/was needed in this type of sector. 

I doubt very much that Avid will die out but from what I've seen so far it does not bode well....

The space you have will always be exceeded in direct proportion to the amount of stuff you have...Thornton's Postulate.

If you read enough posts over at the DUC, it seems that those at the top are businessmen with little knowledge or interest in the business they're in.
