Personally, I'm in no hurry for X4.  I just got X3 back in June and I hardly know it yet.  I think these software companies rush too much for the major updates anyway.  I also use Propellerhead Reason.  I bought version 7 in August of last year (it was just released the previous March) and just late September of this year they released version 8!  That's too fast!  I know people like new features but I, for one really think the major upgrades should come no less that 2 years.

I'm ready for it just so I can stop thinking about it. I don't like that they won't even hint to when it will be coming. If it's not coming in the next 6 months, just say so. The early adopters like myself can then go back to being comfortable working on bigger projects.

I think it makes good sense to release on shorter cycles, at least from a marketing standpoint.  The only problem is when/if it is perceived that they are forcing people to pay for bug fixes.  Less content per release means less new bugs.  Buy in when you see something you like.

I've got to support Cakewalk no matter what because they allowed me to upgrade to 3x from SONAR XL (circa 2000?) for a low price, and they have good tech support.

Coming from a "pro" sequencer that released every 2-3 years, punished users who did not upgrade every time, and had email tech support with slow turn around makes me appreciate Cakewalk.

IOW-Take your time, Cakewalk!

Someone had to say it.

Now I'm sure they will take that to heart and probably they will be cutting their revenue stream in half, therefore not being able to keep as many programmers on board therefore putting less features and fixes into the next release and therefore resulting in less upgrade purchases et. al.

Re: Sonar X4 release date 2014/11/18 10:50:57 (permalink)
I would certainly prefer MORE functional improvements in X4 and FAR LESS
3rd Party fluff...even though it is great added value for those just getting on
the bus...

There should be two tiers of X4 Producer...

1.  Just the Program and the normal included VST - VSTi's - PCM's. - This could be at the $99 price point for the upgrade
and $499 for the full version
2.  The Producer Suite that contains all the the 3rd party "fluff" for the newbies or those who desire it @ the $599 price
point or the $149 upgrade price point.

This requires nothing extra on Cakes part other then pricing and serial # inclusions...but I don't think the
3rd party vendors would care too much for this idea, as they get paid "by the product sold"...

I'm not overly fond of paying extra for things that I probably already own anyways...YMMV...

X4 will have to bring a lot to the table for me to leave X3. It's very stable, I don't need anything and the X4 upgrade price will be 50% off in a year. Or perhaps the upgrade will be $9.99 per month!

I think Noel already alluded to the an excitable thing which asserted that X4 will be more than X3 is. And, we don't know when X4 will be released, so it's someting else that you can suppose that X4 will be 50% off in a year.  Lastly, forget about the notion that Cake is going to a subscription model any time soon, if ever. Cakewalk staff has already implied that that aint gonna happen for sure any time soon, but who knows what the future may bring (years ahead)?

I'm in no hurry.  Wait until technology or software necessitates a change... ie, Windows 10 or the next gen proc that can impact the DAW coding... or some new killer lineup of plugins, but the Prochannel and current offering is awesome.  The change from X2 to X3 was too fast, but the added features made it a good upgrade.

Re: Sonar X4 release date 2014/11/18 23:41:27 (permalink)
I finally got a job offer 2 days ago, which is a big relief, I have been living on savings turning down lesser jobs for one I'd be satisfied working and can commit myself to. I have the savings for a new laptop, but it's not essential yet, and living is. Life has been all over the shop, and I haven't had the chance to really work at any depth with X3 until now, so time to buck my ideas up.

I am happy waiting for the moment, even when it is released I'd wait for the dust to settle. I can't think of anything I need, but cake have a habit of making advances that I feel I do need. I'm sure they will surprise me again. I understand why others don't want plug in over funtionality, but a balance between the 2 I can see being best for cake, as it helps bring new customers in, and they need this as well as us oldies.

Melodyne and AD 2 were the deal breakers for me, yet I had VVocal and was happy with Session drummer. I had been looking at their expansion kits for Session drummer, but now I've moved on to AD2, I am happy with that step up. I upgraded Melodyne, and find it far more intuitive.

I bought Dim Pro a few years ago, but it's part of Sonar now, this makes me wary of upgrading to any cakewalk softsyths, in case its part of X4. I have Rapture LE and Rapture, so I guess full Rapture was bundled last time I think. So ZETA+2 can wait for me. This also makes me wary of investing pro channel stuff, even with connected companies.

The association with XLN shows though that any good plugins not just cake's could be bundled in. I already owned 4 Applied Acoustic plugs way before the session version came with X3, so this makes me wary of spending on anything to be honest (just waiting for AAS's next full package upgrade 50% off, like thay had last Thanks Giving to come up). Even looking at Amplesounds J bass, I think, 'yeah this is a small gap in the X3, could this end up in X4, that would make sense?'.

Breaking away from the annual upgrade is good for me, and as we haven't heard so much since X3e, I hope this is a sign that they are really developing some functionality that takes most of us back, something most users think, year that's essential to me, I didn''t even think I needed that. They can take all the time in the world as far as I am concerned, then maybe that new laptop (which ill be even more powerful the longer I wait) will be ready to be purchased too.

Speaking of cars - I had this idea that someone should manufacture an imitation car that can be placed in the recording studio.  That way, the mixes can be checked out in the car where a lot of music is heard in the long run.

Re: Sonar X4 release date 2014/11/19 22:02:20 (permalink)
I have a fairly old (read ancient) computer, but X3 works just fine with it. I get the feeling that someday soon an upgrade will come along and my computer will scream "ENOUGH Already", and I'll be up for a new computer. That means the price of a software update and the price of a new computer. I'm sure there will be other programs I'm running that won't work well with a new, updated computer, so there's more cash to be splashed.
Fortunately, or unfortunately for Cakewalk, X3 is such a usable, solid piece of software, that I'll be more than happy to stick with what I've got, and an upgrade won't be happening till the computer actually breaks down. Of course there will always be the possibility that there will be some part of X4 that I can't live without (read Hovercar) and I'll be forced to raid the retirement fund to update, but it will have to be some deal breaker for that to happen.
You're reading a post from a musician that only ever uses a couple of dozen track to record audio and nothing else, so a bigger better DAW is not such an issue. Every now and then I'll add some EQ, a compressor or two, then some automation and the odd synth part. I'll put on a Console emulator on every track, then add TH2 to give the guitar some bite, back up to Gobbler and then....Oh No wait, overload.
